Using flannel or felt board for story lessons to develop language of children with special needs

  1. 1. Using flannel or felt board for story lessons to develop language of children with special needs Lalit Kishore Often flannel, felt or terry-wool cloth board is used as storytelling system placed in an about 10-15 degrees backward slant or a smaller frame-type table-board with 20-30 degrees backward slant. A flannel board makes use of gentle adhesive property of interlocking hairs or roughness of flannel cloth materials to enable cut-outs, dual-coded sheets, pictures or cards backed by similar cloth pieces. The slant of the board helps diluting gravity to enable friction between the cloth pieces overcome it so the the learning material stays at place. Using such a board, special educator can develop an idea step by step at micro-level to make learning multi-modal or add variety to Felt board at Disha

The learning material is placed on the flannel board and the special educator uses the sound symbols or commentary of descriptions by pointing out the various parts of the learning material. The base material is cardboard of sizes 60 cm X 40 cm (one-on- one situation) to 120 cm X 80 cm (for small group) covered by dark colour flannel cloth (brown of navy blue Keep the learning material in folder and while using the flannel board, change the material and talk to children slowly with expressions. After the lesson is over, replace the pieces in the envelope at the end of the lesson. For an approximate ergonomically appropriate slant angle for a child with special, the experience at Disha informs that the following trigonometric formula is useful. Tangent of slant angle: Sitting height of the child / full arm length of the child Inset picture shows a slant flannel board for use in one-on-one situation.
