More than a year has
passed since the WHO
declared COVID-19 as a
pandemic on 11th March
2020.
Governments have begun
the process of vaccinating
their populations, amidst
concern of emerging viral
strains of coronaviruses.

Global Immunization Goals
Source: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html
The goal of achieving global
herd immunity against the
coronavirus would only be
achieved if most of the
population has been fully
vaccinated.
While 70% is the ideal target, some
countries (like China) target up to
85% of their population to be fully
vaccinated.
A ‘fully vaccinated’ person has received all the
required doses of a vaccine. In the case of
Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty or Moderna’s
mRNA-1273, 2 doses are required.

A striking difference is also noticeable
between continents. North America and
Europe takes the lead, with a
significant gap when compared to
South America, Asia and others.
Africa currently has the slowest
vaccination rate of any continent, with
some nations yet to start any mass
vaccination campaign.

The COVAX Dilemma
Source: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html
Only 0.3% of doses have been
administered in low-income
countries as of end May 2021.
These ‘less-wealthy’ countries
are relying on COVAX (vaccine-
sharing arrangement co-led by
Gavi, CEPI and WHO) which
guarantees to provide 2 billion
doses by end of 2021.

  • 3. More than a year has passed since the WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic on 11th March 2020. Governments have begun the process of vaccinating their populations, amidst concern of emerging viral strains of coronaviruses. June 2021: The Fight Continues Source: Our World in Data, Worldometer >12.6m Active Cases Worldwide 0.7% of which are serious or critical. >3.77m Deaths Globally Which translates to current mortality rate of 2%. • 5. Global Immunization Goals Source: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html The goal of achieving global herd immunity against the coronavirus would only be achieved if most of the population has been fully vaccinated. While 70% is the ideal target, some countries (like China) target up to 85% of their population to be fully vaccinated. A ‘fully vaccinated’ person has received all the required doses of a vaccine. In the case of Pfizer-BioNTech’s Comirnaty or Moderna’s mRNA-1273, 2 doses are required. June 2021. © Xeraya Capital. 5

  • 7. Source: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html Global Vaccination Progress Credit: New York Times As of 10th June 2021, more than 2.25 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide. • 9. Source: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/world/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html Regional Divide Credit: New York Times A striking difference is also noticeable between continents. North America and Europe takes the lead, with a significant gap when compared to South America, Asia and others. Africa currently has the slowest vaccination rate of any continent, with some nations yet to start any mass vaccination campaign. June 2021. © Xeraya Capital. 9

These ‘less-wealthy’ countries are relying on COVAX (vaccine- sharing arrangement co-led by Gavi, CEPI and WHO) which guarantees to provide 2 billion doses by end of 2021.
