While the condition of the labor market nationally has wavered, the IT industry has thrived. There are 145 million employed workers overall, including five million employed in IT. Temporary workers account for 10 percent of the current total workforce and 20 percent of the IT workforce. The unemployment rate is approximately 7 percent of all workers, whereas in IT this figure less than 3 percent of IT workers.
In addition to the 5 million employed IT workers, there are as many as 20 million hybrid business/IT professionals who do not fit into a traditional IT category.

IT spending continues to rise as businesses realize its value. On an annual basis, the U.S. spends over $1 trillion on IT.
It is projected that the U.S. total IT spending will steadily increase over the next several years, with expected spend to be $1.073 trillion in 2013, $1.112 trillion in 2014, $1.154 trillion in 2015 and $1.196 trillion in 2016.
The temporary staffing market is a $93.8 billion industry. The temporary IT staffing market specifically is a $25 billion industry.
The industries spending the most on IT are financial services, telecommunications, energy, retail and healthcare.

As new jobs are created and organizations increase their IT headcount, positions in IT continue to open.
In 2013, the U.S. created 1.4 million jobs, of which about 236,000 were in IT. And IT leaders are expecting to increase their IT headcount in 2013. Forty-seven percent of IT leaders will be increasing their permanent and 46 percent of IT leaders will be increasing their temporary headcount.

IT is a competitive environment. IT staff retention is shaping up to be one of the biggest challenges facing CIOs. The average IT professional receives 23 recruiter solicitations per week. Nine out of 10 IT professionals say they are open to new opportunities, even if they aren’t actively looking for a new job. Eighty-three percent of IT employees plan to actively look for a new job in 2014. Retention remains a concern. Thirty-seven percent of hiring managers expect voluntary departures to increase, according to Forbes.
