Parallel Threaded Coupler
Taper-Threaded couplers
Rolled Threaded couplers are a type of parallel
threaded couplers where threads are formed by
pressing the ends of the rebar using a set of rollers
and are then connected by a coupler with matching
parallel threads.
Cold Forged Or Upset Parallel threaded couplers are
formed by enlarging the rebar end by 10-30% under
hydraulic pressure prior to cutting parallel threads on to
the upsized
rebar.

Solid-type steel coupling sleeve-These
coupling sleeves are cylindrical shells with split flanges
at one side. Bolts are inserted through holes in the
flange
Strap-type steel coupling sleeve
Grout filled coupler consist of double-tapered
frustum shaped steel sleeves with deformations
similar to reinforcing bar patterns on the inner
wall.
A nonshrink, high-strength, proprietary mortar
grout is introduced into the coupling sleeve and
around the bars using a low-pressure grout
pump.
A wedge-locking coupling sleeve
holds the abutting bar ends in
concentric bearing by lateral
clamping action when the
wedge is driven onto the sleeve.
These coupling sleeves are
cylindrical, with flattened collar
flanges that are formed to provide
a tapered opening that extends
nearly full length of the shell

Welded splice is generally used when the
bar having diameter larger than 36mm
The steel-filled coupler consists of a cylindrical steel shell with
machined interior grooves into which a molten steel filler
material is introduced. Loads are transferred across the
mechanical connection via the filler material to the coupling
sleeve.
Integrally forged coupler-In this system, the mechanical connection
device is manufactured directly from two reinforcing bars.
This is an extension of the integrally forged two-piece coupler. Each
reinforcing bar composing the mechanical connection is altered by a
manufacturing operation that produces a female or male portion suitable
for connecting the two bars

Elimination of errors which are caused due to providing wrong lap length.
Economical.
Restrictions of provision of lap splices given in IS code 456-2000 cl. no. 26.2.5.1 are eliminated
Saving in material
Inspection of connection is easy
Great quality control
Improved structural integrity.
Elimination of lap-splice calculations.
Reduced rebar congestion(A common complaint of concrete placing crews is that they can’t get the concrete
through rebar cages).

• TESTS CONDUCTED ON REBAR COUPLERS:-(Carried out on any 3
samples from whole batch)
1)Control Bar Test:-The bars connected with the coupler are subjected to tensile forces and from
results young’s modulus, avg. yield strain is determined.
2) Slip Test:- Steel bars connected with coupler are subjected to tension until one of bar from the
connection comes out.(This should not happened, bars should fail first before the joint).

• Construction practices in the building of concrete structures have focused on
the use of steel reinforcement to transfer tension and shear forces.
• Lap splicing has become the traditional method of connecting the steel
reinforcing bars. Splicing the reinforcement bars by laps or welding have various
imperfections such as low quality welds, inadequate length of laps, failure in
joints, increase in labour cost etc.
• Present study was focused on the use and applicability of reinforcement
couplers, especially threaded ones as an alternative to lap splices.

• Study types of mechanical rebar coupler and their feasibility.
• Calculation of Cost of Lap Splice.
• Cost Comparisons in Rs.
• Finally a comparison is made between lap splices and mechanical
splices in terms of the strength, economy and feasibility.
