I would make this story relevant because I think that since BBC
Three is watched by many, it would spark many opinions on
the subject of it being closed down. Therefore if I covered this
story on the website I would make sure that it asked questions
son what people thought about it. In order to do this there
would be a little general comments section at the bottom of
the article so that people would be able to discuss this issue
and there could even be a poll on the website as to whether
BBC Three should stay, which would also be able to give us a
clear idea on whether teenagers think that the channel should
stay or go, to save money. This isn’t really ‘hard core’ news so I
would simply summarise it in an understanding and
interesting way for teenagers to read.
Treatment For My Idea
I want my news website to be a bit of both celebrity gossip as well as ‘hard core news’. This is because not
all teens may want to read about celebrities and in the same way some teens may not read ‘hard core’
news, so I think that by making my website be suitable for different people, its more likely that my website
would be visited a lot more because I’d have ‘the best of both worlds’. My target audience are teenagers
who want to read news but can never find the right website that makes them understand the news and that
can relate to them. This is one of my aims because I don’t think that there’s many news websites for
teenagers, also this website is aimed for people who like to just read articles on websites in general. On my
website I would have my homepage and then next to that on my top bar would be different tabs which
would have the titles of the different kinds of news that it would have to offer, e.g ‘Celeb Gossip’ ‘War’ and
‘The World’. By doing this my target audience would be able to find the website easy to use, accessible, as
well as it being able to suit the kind of the news that they want to read, no matter what it is.
Rewritten article for ‘Youth Audience’
Has Ask.fm Got To Go? Yes or No?
Now, we’ve all heard of this social networking site called Ask.fm right? Well for those
who don’t know, it’s a site where people can choose to ask questions anonymously
or while revealing who they are and then people get to answer them. Worries of
social networking sites and cyberbullying have been on the rise lately, especially as
an Italian girl of just 14 years old committed suicide because of the hateful messages
instead of harmless questions that she should’ve received. People have been
blaming the social network itself for this incident such as the Mayor of Fontaniva ,
Marcello Mezzansalma who stated, "Let's close this damn Ask." however others are
blaming the very students who sent theses terrible messages such as ‘kill yourself’
and ‘No body wants you’. We urge all of you young people out there to NOT be a
victim of hateful messages on social networking sites, tell someone and block people
from sending you hateful messages and toe those of you who are guilty of bullying
someone via the internet… there surely are consequences. I hope that by you
reading this article you are learning more about how websites like these can be
dangerous to anyone. So whose to blame for this atrocity? Ask.fm or the people
sending hateful messages? And finally Has Ask.fm got to go? Yes or No?.
Why is my story ‘news worthy?’
Evaluated in terms of ‘Galtung and Ruge’s’ news values:
My story is ‘news worthy because according to the news values, anything concerning negativity, which
in my case was the death of a 14 year old girl, is always rated above ‘positive stories’. Also my story is
something that has always been in the public eye and is heard of more frequently as cyberbullying
continues to go on, so people are aware that this is happening. Although the story is very sad, it is
also simple which according to ‘Galtung and Ruge’s’ news value is important because stories that are
easy to explain are preferred over stories that are much harder to explain. My article was centred
around just one person( which is among the values) although there were a few other people
mentioned. Finally the size matters when it comes to stories. When I say this I mean that my story has
a huge impact on people around the world, for example a teenager can relate to my story because it
may affect them or maybe they use the Ask.fm social networking site, but at the same time, a mother
can relate to this story, because it would make them more cautious of what their child is doing when
they are online and try to protect them. Therefore the bigger the impact the story has the more people
it affects, which is also called the threshold.
How would I make this story relevant?
This story is definitely a story that would be made relevant on my
website, especially because it does affect my target audience,
who are teenagers. On my website I wouldn’t want to try to focus
on the negative impact that this article has, but I would rather
give the teenagers tips on how to revise efficiently so that we
won’t have to see this headline again. I would do this because it
would link to many aspects of a teenagers life such as how their
learning, school, revision at home etc. The tips that I would give
would make the website even better because although they
essentially just came on the website to read news, they’d be
taking something useful away with them.
I would cover this story and make it relevant to the
teenagers that this website is aimed for by first of all
giving them the background to the story of Steven
Laurence’s death before moving on to the next story.
Topics that would be included in the story that
teenagers could relate to includes:
• Racism around them
• Crimes being committed around them
• The fact that Steven Laurence was also a
teenager when this all happened means that
teens should be aware of this.
Although this is ‘hard core news’ I would structure
the article and use language that would be suitable
for my audience so that the article will be
interesting and engaging while still holding its
purpose as an important article.
Detailed Deconstruction Of Website
I have constructed my w
ebsite so that it will be very easy and accessible to use which will contribute to the website being suitable for my
target audience. The top of the website has different types of news for teens to read e.g. celebrity gossip,
international news etc. which gives my audience a wide range of choices for news to read. The articles on the
website are quite short, so not to bore my audience and the website name is easy to remember with it being called
‘Teennews.net’. I laid out the website so that the top stories would be on the homepage of the website, the website
isn’t just for reading stories, but for entertainment purposes teens can sign up in order to take part in daily polls and
quizzes which always has to do with the articles on the site so they can voice their opinions. This makes the website
suitable for my target audience because teens like to know the latest trends and talk about their opinions on it as
well as read other people’s opinions on it. The articles on my website would be written appropriately to suite my
target audience of teens because they wouldn’t be too long and they would normally be articles that would affect
the teens in some type of way, the articles would also be written with Galtung and Ruge’s news values such as
frequency, unexpectedness, reference to famous people, conflict, personal news that would affect news, etc. 6
