The impact of truant and alcohol-related behavior on educational aspirations: a
study of US high school seniors.

Department of Health Education & Behavior, University of Florida, Gainesville,
USA. aebarry@ufl.edu
BACKGROUND: Truancy and alcohol use are quality indicators of academic
achievement and success. However, there remains a paucity of substantive research
articulating the impact these deviant behaviors have on an adolescent's
educational aspirations. The purpose of this study is to assess whether recent
alcohol use and truancy impact students' educational aspirations among a
nationally representative sample of US high school seniors.
METHODS: This study conducted a secondary data analysis of the Monitoring the
Future project data, 2006. Logistic regression was conducted to assess how
alcohol use and truancy affected educational aspirations. Subsequent interaction
effects were assessed in the final multivariable model. Demographic variables
such as age, sex, race, and father and mother's educational level were included
as covariates in the regression model.
RESULTS: Results indicate that as students engage in increased alcohol use and/or
truancy, educational aspirations decrease. Thus, students who indicated a desire
to attend a 4-year college/university were less likely to engage in high-risk
drinking behavior and/or truancy. Moreover, in testing the interaction between
truancy and alcohol use, as it relates to educational aspirations, the logistic
regression model found both of these independent variables to be statistically
significant predictors of the likelihood students would attend a 4-year
college/university.
3. Además, las investigaciones futuras deberían examinar los factores de riesgo y de
protección que
pueden influir en una de las aspiraciones educativas.

This study examines the social risk and protection factors for excessive alcohol
use, based on the data from the "National Survey on the prevalence of substance
abuse in 2008", in a population of young Argentines, from 16 to 24 years of age.
Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used. The following risk factors were
observed: age at onset (the younger, the higher the risk); the Pampas region,
Northwest and Northeast; males; from families with unsatisfied basic needs.
Protective factors include idleness, no opportunity to try out illicit drugs, not
being tempted to experiment with illicit drugs and no previous use of tobacco, or
tranquilizers, or cocaine or cocaine-based substances in the lifetime. The
results provide useful information to develop prevention programs for adolescents
and young people.

This study examined the effectiveness of the Brief Alcohol Screening and
Intervention for College Students using theory-driven harm reduction brief
motivational interviewing (BMI) for decreasing high-risk drinking and negative
consequences. Three surveys were administered to 102 volunteer freshmen college
students at baseline and 3 months postintervention. The BMI intervention was
administered at baseline and 2 weeks later. Descriptive statistics and summary
graphs were used to determine longitudinal changes in drinking quantity,
frequency, and negative outcomes. Number of drinks, hours of drinking, and
negative consequences decreased, indicating a significant decrease in alcohol
consumption and negative consequences. This study contributes valuable
implications for the design of theory-driven harm reduction, evidence-based
interventions for high-risk drinking among freshmen college students.

Alcohol consumption is considered a global problem, principally affecting
adolescents. In this context, the aims of this study were to identify the
pedagogical strategies developed by elementary school teachers in the approach to
alcohol with adolescents; To analyze the attitudes, beliefs, values and practices
of the elementary school teachers in relation to alcohol; To discuss the
repercussions of the attitudes, beliefs, values and practices of the teachers
about alcohol in the dialogue with the students and in the implementation of the
strategies referred to above. This was a qualitative study performed with 26
teachers of a Rio de Janeiro public school. The data were analyzed through
thematic content analysis and grouped into 5 categories. It was concluded that
social imaginary and attitudinal construction of the teachers directly interferes
with the personal and professional practice and has repercussions in the
quotidian life of the students. It was noted that the focus should not just be on
the students, but on the relationship of the teachers with their pedagogic
strategies.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of levels of self esteem
and alcohol consumption in adolescents, by carrying out a transversal,
descriptive study, in a college of nursing of Queretaro in Mexico, in the month
of July 2008, with a sample of 109 adolescents, between 17 and 20 years old. For
attainment of the data two instruments were applied: AUDIT and the Rosemberg self
esteem scale. The majority of the participating adolescents had high self esteem
(94.5%) and none presented low self esteem. Of the adolescents in the study 80.7%
9. did not consume alcohol hazardously. It was concluded that the adolescents
presented high self esteem and low alcohol consumption. Therefore, it is
necessary to implement preventive programs related to alcohol consumption and to
identify the protective factors to guarantee the maintenance of healthy habits
for the adolescents.

This study aimed to evaluate the alcohol consumption phenomenon in public schools
in Coimbra, Portugal (7th, 8th and 9th grades) for the implementation of a
preventive program of alcohol use/abuse. This is a quantitative, descriptive and
correlational study. The sample included 654 students (51.5% female) between 12
and 18 years of age. The Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire--Adolescent form
(AEQ-A) and the Questionnaire of Knowledge on Alcohol were used for data
collection. Results show that positive expectancy on alcohol is discriminative of
consumption and occurrence of intoxication. Positive expectancy exists even
12. before adolescents have significant experiences with alcohol consumption and
increases with age, which reinforces the need for early preventive effort. These
results permitted to improve the prevention program included in the school
curriculum of the 7th grade students.

between 16-24 years.
METHOD: Two hundred and eight women who attended a contraception and sexual
health clinic in south east England completed a questionnaire. Eight subsequently
took part in focus group interviews.
RESULTS: Across the age range 16-24 years, the younger the respondents, the
earlier the age at which they first drank alcohol and the more they were drinking
at the time of the study. They were also more likely to experience negative
health consequences. Respondents aged 16 or 17 years were most likely to have
commenced drinking at a young age.
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that women are commencing alcohol consumption at
a younger age and that this has adverse consequences for their health and
wellbeing.

CONCLUSIÓN: Los resultados sugieren que las mujeres están comenzando el consumo de
alcohol en
una edad más temprana y que esto tiene consecuencias negativas para su salud y
