Editor's Notes
Ever hear Net-Working is Not-Working? That’s only if you’re not doing it right.
My name is KiKi L’Italien and over the past 7 years working as a digital strategist, which asks that I understand how to connect with people and build relationships ON-line, I have also managed to build a pretty amazing professional network within the tech, association, and events industries based on the relationships I’ve built OFF-line and IN-person with people in rooms like this.
Some of these connections have directly led to more money through new projects and opportunities, which is great. But others have led to some of the best friends I have in the world and new ideas and discoveries that I wouldn’t have had if I hadn’t met them. I can say that my life has been forever changed in many positive ways as a result of some of the people I’ve met in networking receptions like the one we’re all about to go into. So if you want to expand your network, if you want to add more joy to your life, more opportunity, you’re about to get that…and my goal is to tell you some things I’ve learned over the years through experience and through research about the best ways to approach networking and to help you avoid some of the problem areas many of us run into.

Action – What to do and what not to do when networking
Follow through – When you should follow up with new connections

So now you’re have the right mindset about networking and you’re getting ready to jump in. How can you best prepare for networking?

Don’t jump into talking shop…yes, this is you offering someone else the chance to give their elevator pitch, but let that happen organically. Can we maybe connect as humans first instead of trying to figure out if we are directly valuable to each other as contacts in the tackiest way possible?
There are definitly times when you might have a reason to easily slide into talking about work, but this kind of question is the reason so many people hate networking events.
In general, work on building your curiosity! Challenge your assumptions. Ask the questions that come to mind after someone says something.
For example, I love talking about things like neuroplasticity, growth hacking, and running. I’m also fascinated with cooking and right now I’m fascinated with learning how to ask better questions. That’s before we even touch on digital strategy. Be able to talk about something other than what you do, but (obviously) be able to talk about that well, too.
Time is our scarcest resource. When talking with someone, especially someone with a crowd around them already, be aware of that person’s time.
Think your question or talk might take longer? Ask if you can reconnect later or at a better time.
Focus on the other person.
This can happen, too…

Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.
Aren’t you curious about who those people might be for you in 1 year from now? They might be in this room. They might change your life.
It could all start with the right question.
