1. Comprehensive Teacher Exams.
The primary academic subjects that are taught throughout the day are: Social Studies, math, English, reading, writing and math. These subjects are taught and there should be some way to determine progress that students are making with their daily academic curriculum. One way is to take data in the classroom on regular basis that is based on daily or weekly lesson planning of student progress. Homework, quizzes and exams are another way to measure progress on a regular basis. The use of comprehensive exams should be used to test a student on a mid term and final exam basis. Teachers don’t like to grade exams and students don’t like to take exams but an examination is the only true way to measure progress. Exams can be given in the form of multiple choice questions, true and false, matching, essays, short answers (sentences) and problem set in math. Tests can be teacher made or they can be standardized but the test should always measure what is targeted to measure.
The Brigance Test of Basic Skills which is also known as Brigance Inventory of Basic Skills-Revised is a great assessment to assess skills that should have been acquired or the measurement of skills that are being learned in a classroom setting. The Brigance can be used to as an assessment in a group setting or on an individual basis. It is a criterion referenced test and if it is administered in a group setting the teacher can assess a student’s performance in a classroom setting. The group setting is the most realistic way for a teacher to test curriculum skills in a classroom setting. The Brignace can be given every six months in a classroom setting giving the classroom teacher comprehensive test results and progress that the student has achieved. The Brigance Test assesses reading decoding, reading comprehension, writing, listening, and comprehension and math skills. The Brigance doesn’t look at Social Studies or Science skills but teacher made comprehensive exams can be created for these areas. The teacher will be creating examinations throughout the year in every subject, but The Brigance can give measureable results on a six month basis. The Brigance can also help teachers to plan appropriate lessons in the areas that it assesses based on the students results. Testing will always be used to assess student progress and if the students are standardized test students The Brigance is a great test to increase their skills and experiences with taking tests. If a student is an alternate assessment student an assessment or testing still should be used informally to measure performance on a regular basis.
