Introduction
Global marketing is adjusting a company’s marketing strategy to the
specific needs of international consumers. Global marketing aims to
reach a wider audience in the worldwide market . The scope of
international marketing covers planning, promotion, and distribution.
3
Marketing and
Global Marketing Defined
4
Marketing: “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for
creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings
that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at
large”
Marketing Mix: The 4 Ps
Global Marketing: The scope of activities outside the home
market
“Economic globalization constitutes
integration of national economies into the
international economy through trade, direct
foreign investment (by corporations and
multinationals), short-term capital flows,
international flows of workers and humanity
generally, and flows of technology.”
Jagdish Bhagwati

Because of significant differences in culture, trends,
regulations, and more, you need a unique marketing
strategy for every country you plan on doing business
in. For this reason, market research is essential.

Starbucks provides a good case study of a global marketer that can simultaneously
execute all four of the growth strategies.
Market penetration: Starbucks is building on its loyalty card and rewards program in
the United States with a smartphone app that enables customers to pay for purchases
electronically. The app displays a bar code that the barista can scan.
Market development: Starbucks is entering India via an alliance with the Tata Group.
Phase one calls for sourcing coffee beans in India and marketing them at Starbucks
stores throughout the world. The next phase will likely involve opening Starbucks
outlets in Tata’s upscale Taj hotels in India.
Product development: Starbucks created a brand of instant coffee, Via, to enable its
customers to enjoy coffee at the office and other locations where brewed coffee is not
available. After a successful launch in the United States, Starbucks rolled out Via in
Great Britain, Japan, South Korea, and several other Asian countries.
Diversification: Starbucks dropped the word “Coffee” its logo. It recently acquired a
juice maker, Evolution Fresh; the Bay Bread bakery, and tea retailer Teavana
Holdings. Next up: Revamping stores so they can serve as wine bars and attract new
customers in the evening.
Global Marketing: What It Is and
What It Isn’t
9
• An important managerial task in global marketing is learning to recognize the extent to which it is
possible to extend marketing plans and programs worldwide, as well as the extent to which
adaptation is required.
• The way a company addresses this task is a reflection of its global marketing strategy(GMS).
• Standardization versus adaptation is the extent to which each marketing mix element can be
executed in the same or different ways in various country markets.
• Concentration of marketing activities is the extent to which marketing mix activities are performed in
one or a few country locations.
• Coordination of marketing activities refers to the extent to which marketing mix activities are planned
and executed interdependently around the globe.
• Integration of competitive moves is the extent to which a firm’s competitive marketing tactics are
interdependent in different parts of the world.

Standardization Vs.
Adaptation
11
•Globalization (Standardization)
–Developing standardized products marketed worldwide with a
standardized marketing mix (Ray-Ban – Rolex- Iphone- Gillete-
Caterpillar’s)
–Essence of mass marketing
•Global localization (Adaptation)
–Mixing standardization and customization in a way that minimizes
costs while maximizing satisfaction
–Essence of segmentation (Coke – Qoo Juice – canned coffee)
–Think globally, act locally (Mean menue, Mc Arabia- Mc Aloo IN-
Makkari Fl, MakDO PH)
Global Localization
12
• “Think globally, act locally”
• May be a combination of standard (product) and
nonstandard approaches ( distribution or packaging)
• (Mean menue, Mc Arabia- Mc Aloo IN- Makkari Fl, MakDO
PH)
• Kraft developed Tang flavors of mango and pineapple for
Latin America and the Mideast
The Importance of Going Global
13
• For U.S. companies, 75% of total world market for goods and services is
outside the country.
• Coca-Cola earns 75% of operating income and 2/3 of profit outside of North
America.
• For Japanese companies, 90% of world market is outside the country.
• 94% of market potential is outside of Germany for its companies even
though it is the largest EU market
Management Orientations
EPRG Framework
14
Ethnocentri
c
Regiocentri
c
Polycentric
Geocentric
Management Orientations
15
•Ethnocentric Orientation
– Home country is superior to others
– Sees only similarities in other countries
–Assumes products and practices that succeed at home will be successful
everywhere
–Leads to a standardized or extension approach (Toshiba – Sharp, Most US in
1960s)
Management Orientations
16
• Polycentric Orientation
-Each country is unique
-Each subsidiary develops its own unique business and marketing
strategies
-Often referred to as multinational
-Leads to a localized or adaptation approach that assumes products must
be adapted to local market conditions (Unilever Rexona Deodorant)
Management Orientations
17
•Regiocentric Orientation
–A region is the relevant geographic unit
•Ex: The NAFTA or European Union market, Gulf Market. GM - Ford
–Some companies serve markets throughout the world but on a regional
basis
•Ex: General Motors had four regions for decades
Management Orientations
18
Geocentric Orientation
-Entire world is a potential market
-Strives for integrated global strategies
-Also known as a global or transnational company
-Retains an association with the headquarters country
-tries serving world markets from a single country or sources globally to
focus on select country markets
-Leads to a combination of extension and adaptation elements (Nestle,
Harley-Devidson, Gap)
Integration
& Global Marketing
19
•Multilateral trade agreements (NAFATA, WTO, EU, GCC)
•Converging market needs and wants and the information
revolution (soft drink), (YouTube).
•Transportation and communication improvements (Shipping, Travel
75(1970) 1.4Bl(2018), Televideo, Internet)
•Product development costs (Drugs)
•Quality Global companies (raise the bar)
•World Economic Trends (Free market, deregulation, Privatization)
Integration and Global
Marketing
20
•Leverage (Advantages a company enjoys by going global)
–Experience transfers Chevron
–Scale economies, LG(single factory – limited products)
–Resource utilization
–Global strategy (Renault – Brazil, S Korea, Moroco)
Global Integration and Global
Marketing
21
• Management myopia
• Organizational culture
• National controls (Tariff)
• Opposition to globalization (Labor unions,
NGOs)
