Few things can compete with the emergence of a new media practice for sheer innovation and unpredictability. Conventions, orthodoxies and routine have not yet set in. Virtually anything is possible. Consider the earliest years of film, radio and television, when media makers engaged in unparalleled levels of experimentation thanks to the absence of rules. Today, this untamed creative fervor can be found in the new documentary: a fast-emerging form that includes interactive, participatory and community-created fact-based storytelling.
'Unruly' better describes the types of documentaries that are gathered in _docubase.
Interactive, collaborative, location-based, community-created, parts of larger trans-media experiences… the projects gathered in _docubase defy easy categorization. They are made by and with communities, journalists, citizen-activists, film and video makers, game-designers, community organizers, data-visualizers and ordinary people. Some production teams model their credits on the conventions of film, others on games, and still others invent new ways of describing their work.
Why so complicated? Because we are witnessing a rare moment that is in equal parts creative and inchoate.
We will explore together how _docubase offers multiple ways of bringing order to this complexity.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. UPS/FedEx and “The Fiscal Cliff”
By Ken Wood, President of LJM Consultants - Freight Auditing & Consulting
The good news is our country has averted going over the fiscal cliff; the bad news is your
UPS/FedEx rates and surcharges have once again increased significantly. Like clockwork, both
major parcel carriers, UPS and FedEx, have implemented their yearly rate increase, and once
again they are masking the true impact of the increase by stating the following: “Air and
International Services will increase an average net 4.5% through a combination of a 6.5%
increase in rates and a two percentage point reduction in the Air and International fuel
surcharge. Ground Services will increase an average net 4.9% through a combination of a 5.9%
increase in rates and a one percentage point reduction in the Ground fuel surcharge”. Does
anybody actually know what this even means? Thankfully, we do!!!
The operative word in the carrier rate increase announcement is average. It is important to
realize that the announced rate increase is based on just that, an “overall average”, calculated
by rating individual shipments weighing 1lb through 150 lbs to every cell in every zone. There is
not a shipper in the United States who fits that shipping profile of being average. When you
take a closer look at the carrier’s rate tables, you get a more realistic and accurate view of the
actual increase and how the increase affects your particular business based on your company’s
unique shipping profile. If you are the typical small parcel shipper, the majority of your

2. packages weigh less than 30 lbs. Guess where the highest carrier rate increases are? You
guessed it. The increases on lighter weight shipments are considerably higher than the
increases on heavier weight (less common) shipments. For example, a 3 lb ground package
going to zone 3 increased by 8.94% while a 74 lb package going to zone 3 increased by 1.69%.
Shipments weighing between 1lb and 10 lbs increased on average 8% while shipments weighing
between 71 lbs and 150 lbs increased on average 4.7%. This is why the carriers can continue to
quote an average increase of 4.9%. Your actual increase will be closer to 7.5% and that doesn’t
include the ever increasing “Surcharges and Accessorial Fees”.
The following chart illustrates examples of the average percentage increases for Ground
Packages by weight breaks as well as the increases for Air Services. To see a wider sampling of
the increases by weight and zone (please click here)

31-70 lbs. 5.6% 2 Day Air 8.0%
71-150 lbs. 4.7% 3 Day Select 8.5%
What about the 2013 “Accessorial Fees” and Surcharges?
Unfortunately, the 2013 base rate increase is only part of the bad news. Package surcharges
and accessorial fees can add as much as 30% or more to the cost of shipping a package. These
additional fees, such as address corrections, residential surcharges, dimensional weight charges
and delivery area surcharges (to name a few) account for a large portion of both UPS’s and
FedEx’s profits. Year after year, these surcharges and fees have been increasing at a higher
percentage than the base rates and this year is no different. For example, the 2013 surcharge
for an “Address Correction” increased to $12, up 9.1%; the “Residential” surcharge for ground
shipments increased to $2.80, up 9.8% and the Declared Value (insurance) surcharge is now
$.85 per $100 with a minimum charge of $2.55, up 6.25%. These surcharges coupled with the
base rate increase could escalate your actual shipping costs by more than 10% over last year.

4. Understanding how your business will be affected by these rate increases is crucial to your
company’s bottom line. Two things that your organization can do immediately to help offset
these increases are to:
audit your weekly carrier invoices with a professional third party auditing firm
get professional assistance and look to renegotiate your UPS/FedEx agreement
immediately
