Cloud-first digital experience platform
Hello and thank you for joining the webinar. My name is Petr Palas and I'm the CEO of Kentico. Today, we will talk about the new Kentico Cloud products that we launched at our 404 conference at the beginning of November. You will learn how we see the future of the CMS market and how Kentico Cloud is going to deliver 10-times better experience and results for both developers and marketers.
Now let's take a look at how we think about the future of CMS.
The old Romans called giraffe a camelopardalis. They believed that giraffe is a result of breeding of a camel [ˈkæməl] and a leopard [ˈlepəd].
This reminds me of how we used to think about CMS and the Cloud...
... let's combine the Cloud and a CMS and we will have a Cloud CMS, right?
Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that and the result is...
... just a CMS in the Cloud.
The problem with running a traditional CMS on premise or in the cloud is the number of things you need to take care of:
You need to configure a webserver
You need to install the CMS
You need to take care of hotfixes, upgrades, backup, security, performance
... and only after that, you can work on your website.
Even if you install your CMS in the cloud, you still need to take care of many of these elements.
So you may be spending hundreds of hours just baby-sitting the CMS. Isn't it frustrating?
We always felt there must be a better way how to create websites. So we kept looking for something much more simple. Something that would allow digital agencies and their clients to focus on one thing that really matters...
Creating a great website that brings business results.
And we believe a true cloud CMS is the solution for all these challenges.
Now you may think: well, why should I care about this? I've been running my CMS on premise or in the cloud for years. It's not great, but I learned how to live with that, so why would I change the way I work?
Well, the world is changing and we see 4 trends in today's market that emphasize an urgent need for a Cloud CMS.
Firstly, companies go through digital transformation. They need to be much more agile in their digital initiatives and the traditional CMS model is too slow and rigid.
Secondly, Companies move more and more systems in to the cloud and Software as a Service becomes a standard delivery model for both B2C and B2B applications.
The CMS industry has been surprisingly conservative in the adoption of Software as a Service and there haven't been any good SaaS CMS products until recently. However, this is changing right now and all the CMS vendors and digital agencies need to adopt the SaaS model if they want to stay competitive and win these customers who are increasingly moving to the Cloud.
Thirdly, websites are no longer islands of static content. They are part of the customer journey and they need to integrate with other systems. It means today's websites are increasingly created as a presentation layer on top of multiple micro-services.
This shift in website architecture is connected with the new way how developers build websites. Today, they use modern front-end development frameworks and they need a full control over the code. The problem is that most traditional CMS systems stand in their way instead of being helpful.
Fourthly, companies need to deliver a personalized digital experience across multiple channels. It means the traditional web-oriented approach is no longer enough.
If you combine these 4 trends, you can see it's time to revisit the way we think about CMS.
We believe we're approaching just another inflexion point in the evolution of the CMS industry, an industry that started around 1995 with the first page generators.
Those were replaced around 2000 with dynamic CMS systems.
Around 2008, CMS vendors started to offer digital experience as an add-on to their on-premise platforms. And, once again, many of those once popular dynamic CMS systems lost market share or disappeared from the market.
We believe the next year will represent the dawn of the next generation of CMS: the cloud-first digital experience platforms. They will make the original promises of the Cloud come true and disrupt today's market.
Based on what we've just said, it's no surprise Kentico grows its investment into new Cloud products.
Last year, we introduced our first cloud product, Kentico Draft. It allows you to produce content in the cloud.
Today, we're introducing two completely new products: a CMS and a customer engagement platform, both provided as a cloud service.
Kentico Deliver is our API-first CMS. It contains all the content management functionality of Kentico Draft plus it allows you to display the content on your website, mobile app or any other channel using its super-fast content delivery API.
Kentico Engage is our customer engagement platform. It allows you to track customer behavior and use this data to provide a personalized digital experience.
Together, these services represent Kentico Cloud: the cloud-first digital experience platform for agencies and their clients.
And when I say cloud-first, I mean it was built from scratch with a modern cloud architecture. It's true Software as a Service with all its advantages, so it's no hybrid model like managed hosting or Platform as a Service CMS provided by some vendors.
Now, you may wonder how Kentico Cloud addresses the challenges of traditional CMS and the key trends I talked about.
Kentico Cloud is provided in the Software as a Service model. We run it in the cloud and we take care of everything for you, so you can focus on your project.
All you need is use its super-fast API that provides the content and customer profiles. It is a standard REST API which means you can use it with any programming language, on any platform and on any device.
Let me say this again as it's really important: With Kentico Cloud, we're moving beyond our .NET origins. If you have PHP, JAVA, node.JS, iOS or Android developers, they can all work on your projects with Kentico Cloud.
With traditional CMS systems, you had to take care of uptime, security, performance and upgrades. At the same, you had a limited control over your website. That's over.
With Kentico Cloud, we make sure the service is available 24x7. We run the service on the Microsoft Azure cloud and we monitor it day and night through our global support team on three continents.
We take care of most security risks connected with running a CMS. You only take care of securing your application which is generally much easier as you don't have to care about the security of the CMS code.
We take care of all heavy duty on our side. We leverage the power of the cloud to provide a super-fast API. We use a global content delivery network that makes the content available anywhere in the world in no time. We store all the content in a highly scalable document database which also means that you don't need a database server. You just use our super-fast API.
And you don't have to worry about painful upgrades and hotfixes. Kentico Cloud is built as a true multitenant cloud service. It means all customers are using the same version of the service. When we introduce a new functionality, it's automatically available to all customers. We will provide backward compatibility for our API, so that you don't have to change your code every time we make a new release.
Since you run your code in your own environment, you maintain a full control over your application. It also means you can choose any programming language, any platform and any development process for your project.
Now you may wonder: What does that mean to the website development process?
Let's say you have just created a nice website design and converted it into a beautiful static HTML code.
With a traditional CMS approach, you install the CMS and then you rewrite your code into a format defined by your CMS. Then your CMS displays your new website.
The problem is you often need to adjust your HTML code to the given CMS which requires extra time and limits your flexibility. Moreover, your website isn't ready until you transform all the HTML code into the CMS templates.
With Kentico Cloud, you benefit from the headless CMS approach. In this case, you just take your beautiful code and simply replace the static content with dynamic content retrieved through Kentico Cloud API using your favorite programming language.
It means your code remains yours and the CMS doesn't impact how it's written.
And there's one more advantage of this approach: you can convert your website into a dynamic one step by step. So you can start with a static website, then you can make for example your blog dynamic and then you can enable editing of content on the home page, etc.
Overall, the time to market with Kentico Cloud is generally much shorter as you avoid many extra steps required by traditional CMS.
Now, let me show you how you can use the products. First, let's see how you can manage the content.
Let me summarize the products you've just seen, their availability and pricing.
You already know Kentico Draft that allows you to produce structured content in the Cloud, independently on your website or CMS. There's a free edition which now includes 3 users and there's Standard edition at $49 per month per 5 users.
Kentico Deliver is our API-first CMS. It provides all the content management functionality of Kentico Draft plus a super-fast content delivery API you can use to display content on websites, mobile applications or any other channel.
It's available today. In fact, we're already using it on our KenticoCloud.com website and you can start using it for your projects right now.
It starts with a pretty powerful free version that can be used as a starting point for commercial projects - and continues with Standard and Professional editions with a higher number of users, content entries and API calls included.
We also aim to support the enterprise customers with higher requirements, including 24x7 support, SLA, onboarding and other extras for mission-critical projects.
Kentico Engage is our customer engagement solution. It allows you to track customer behavior and provide personalized experience.
It's currently in the preview, so you can already try it and it will be released in January.
Again, it starts with a free version for smaller projects and continues with Standard and Professional editions with a higher number of users and named contacts. Plus, there's again an edition for the enterprise customers.
One of the big advantages of Kentico Cloud is that it provides a complete digital experience platform combining content management and customer engagement. So we also offer Kentico Cloud Enterprise Suite [sweet] which includes the enterprise edition of Kentico Deliver and Kentico Engage.
Let's talk a little bit about positioning. When you look at today's market, you can see a growing number of cloud-first headless CMS products. These products are typically built by developers for developers. Many of them, however, suffer when it comes to the usability for business users.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are traditional monolithic CMS or digital experience platforms. You can install them on premise or in the cloud, but they miss the advantages of the cloud-first CMS. Their advantage is that they were built to handle the complexity of content governance.
Kentico Cloud brings the best of both worlds. Our goal is to provide a product that combines the benefits of modern cloud architecture AND a great usability for business users. We want to go beyond basic content management scenarios and cover the whole content life cycle with an end-to-end solution that supports creativity and collaboration.
Now that you've seen the new Kentico Cloud products, you may be asking: Which platform should I use for my next project - Kentico EMS or Kentico Cloud? Let me make it a little easier for you.
Kentico EMS is our existing product line that most of you know pretty well. We recommend Kentico EMS for complex projects that benefit from Kentico EMS broad functionality including content management, online marketing, ecommerce, intranets and online communities. It’s important to say that we continue working on Kentico EMS side by side with Kentico Cloud: we're releasing K10 in December and we already work on the roadmap for Kentico 11.
Kentico Cloud is a new product line that will unlock the potential of the Cloud to our clients and partners. We see a growing demand for the SaaS model and that's why we created Kentico Cloud. You can already use it for content-focused projects that benefit from the flexibility of the API-first approach. In the future, it will support projects of all sizes that need a fully integrated digital experience platform provided as a cloud-first service.
If you've been following Kentico over the past 12 years, you know that our strategy has always been focused on digital agencies and their clients. We build our business around digital agencies and we want to enable them to build their business around Kentico.
Kentico Cloud is a continuation of this story and we would like to encourage our partners to join us on the journey to the Cloud. Together, we can win and deliver even more successful projects for clients who choose the SaaS model.
With Kentico Cloud, we're starting a new Partner Program for digital agencies who want to use a cloud-first solution. It will be separate [ˈsepəˌreɪt] from our existing partner program.
Currently, we're opening the Early Partner Program. These early partners will receive a number of benefits, including:
Free use of Kentico Cloud for their first project for one year.
Priority support, onboarding, training and consulting provided directly by our development team.
Plus increased visibility for you and your project through our promotion.
This is a limited offer and we will select only 20 partners who will be included in this initial phase, so if you're interested, contact us quickly.
Today we introduced two new cloud products and our vision for Kentico Cloud. I hope you're as excited as we are about the new possibilities coming with Kentico Cloud.
So, I'd like to encourage you to try it now - just go to kenticocloud.com and sign up for a free trial.
We will also appreciate your feedback, so please feel free to contact us through the chat on the website or send us an email to cloud@kentico.com.
