Female Reproductive Organs
External Female Anatomy
            • Vulva- general term
              for external female
              sex organs
            • Mons pubis- fatty
              tissue that covers the
              pubic bone
            • Labia Majora- Two
              folds of skin running
              from Mons Pubis to
              below the vaginal
              opening, they protect
              the genitals
External Female Anatomy
            • Labia Minora- 2 smaller
              folds of skin within the
              labia majora
            • Clitoris- at the top of
              the Labia
              Minroa, central of
              sexual stimulation in
              the female
            • Urethra- below
              clitoris, opening to the
              bladder
Internal Organs
• Hymen- thin ring of • Vagina- empty
  tissue covering the passageway leading
opening of the vagina, from the vaginal
divides external & opening to the uterus.
internal sex organs Has 3 main functions: 1.
                             channel for menstrual
                             flow, 2. receptacle for
                             the male penis during
                             intercourse 3. birth
                             canal
Internal Organs
• Cervix- opening of the
  uterus, strongest muscle
  in women’s body, closed
  during pregnancy, open
  during birth
• Uterus- hollow, muscular
  organ shaped like a pear.
  One main function- to
  protect and nourish a
fetus until it is ready to
  live outside the womb.
Internal Organs
• Fallopian Tubes- 2 tubes
shaped like arched bridges • Ovaries- two solid egg
• Carries the egg cell toward shaped structures
the uterus and the sperm about the size of peach
  cell toward the egg cell
                                  pits.
• Location for fertilization
                                • 2 main functions-
                                  produce female sex
                                  hormones estrogen and
                                  progesterone and stores
                                  and releases the female
                                  egg cell
Other things you should know …
• Time line:
  – Ages 9-12: secondary sex characteristics appear
  – Ages 11-14: menstrual cycle begins
  – Late 20’s-30’s- peak sexual urges
  – Ages 45-55 menopause
So what happens …
• Menstruation: the
  shedding of the
  endometrium, aka uterine
  lining.
• Ovulation: the act of the
  egg leaving the ovary
