Transplant Paper
NURS 450 – Adult Health Nursing III
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this paper is to provide the student with the opportunity to demonstrate integration of the knowledge necessary to care for the patient with an organ transplant. This paper should integrate knowledge from the physical, social, and nursing sciences and learning theories to assist the patient and family in meeting their needs
Student Approach to Assignment
We were advised to try taking a personal approach to this assignment by picking an organ that we had experience with in some capacity. Because of this advice, I chose to write about bone marrow transplants as related to acute lymphoblastic leukemia because my cousin was diagnosed with this disease and was at one point in need of such a transplant. I feel that this background made this paper more passionate and accurate.
Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
This assignment for the portfolio allows me to show my articulation abilities as well as my ability to create a well-informed paper when I am passionate about my subject. The following program objectives are highlighted in this paper:
Communication
Produces clear, accurate, and relevant writing using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
I believe that this paper showcases my writing abilities. It is easy to write about a topic that is close to your heart. There were few grammar errors exhibited in this paper and my final grade was a 98.
Teaching
Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance one’s own knowledge base
In researching information about bone marrow transplantation, I utilized several different types of sources. These sources included approximately textbooks, several nursing journal research articles as well as informative websites of organizations and medical centers.
Research
Evaluates research that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of nursing interventions
One research article I used involved the idea of using yoga to relieve the anxiety patients and their parents felt before, during and after cancer treatment. The intervention of beginning and encouraging yoga class attendance was deemed to be effective in reducing anxiety for all involved, but especially so in the high-school level adolescents’ age group. This intervention also increased the “well-being” feeling for parents and adolescents.
Leadership
Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
While much of the transplant process revolves around the physicians and surgeons, nurses play still play an important role. We are often the first-line healthcare providers that handle both the donors’ and recipients’ medical care. When it comes to transplants, nurses handle the day-to-day interactions such as drawing blood for lab tests, type and cross-matching, etc.
Professionalism
Understands the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice and healthcare delivery, as well as limits to one’s own scope of practice
There are limits set forth on both recipients and donors when it comes to organ transplantation. By regulating who is able to donate and general characteristics of the recipient regarding health status, recipients are ranked based on when they needed the transplant and how serious their need is. This regulation allows for a strict handling of who gets what and when. As nurses our duty is to appropriately inform the regulatory committees of all health statuses and changes whether or not it may lower our patient’s ranking.
