IBM Sametime 9 Installation Woes and Proactive Repairs presented common issues during Sametime 9 installation and solutions to address them. These included missing information from clients, installation failures for no reason, inability to login to the WAS console, and logging into old Sametime environments via the proxy. The presentation provided links to system requirements, the installation spreadsheet, starting and stopping services, addressing WAS login issues, setting up the proxy, enabling SSL, and client installations.

2. Today’s Topics
1. Seek and You May Not Receive
2. During the Installation, You May…
3. Installation all finished? Well…
3. Seek and You May Not Receive
Even the best clients miss information
• Try to get a Visio or my ST spreadsheet filled out
• VMs? Firewall? Security? Ports? Logins? Access?
List of Ports for Everything
• SSL Certificates…and their passwords
• Server, Domain, Password Naming Conventions
• Meetings with Audio/Video?
• SIP?(SUTLite)
• Clustering?
4. Zero to Hero
• Is a treasure map, not a roadmap
• Good instructions but…
It has 68,638 VIEWS…There is Business out there!

Domino LDAP - Version 1.0
5. During the Installation you may…
Experience some of the following issues:
• One too many WAS Updates
• Installs fail for no reason
• Unable to login to the WAS Console
• Logging into the old ST environment via the Proxy
6. One Too Many WAS Updates
Sametime is REALLY finicky, if IBM did not say to
use something, DO NOT USE IT
Verify all patches and versions here (and check Fix Central):

* There is a Report Filter, you edit it to select all, to see the WAS updates
7. Installs Fail For No Reason
If when installing one of the applications through
the Install Manager it hangs, check these items:
1) Shorten the length of the OS Install file system
c:downloadssametime9communityserverinstallfile.exe to
c:downloadsinstallfile.exe
2) Shorten the length of the installation directory
c:program FilesIBMwebsphereappserverprofiles... to
c:ibmwebsphereappserverprofiles....
8. Unable to login to the WAS Console
This WILL happen to you at some point, so try these…
Unable to Login to WebSphere Console after enabling LDAP Security
Disabling WebSphere administrative security when admin console is not accessible
If your installation attempts of WAS failed, the ports will
change for the Websphere Console.
1.Open WC_profiledir/logs/AboutThisProfile.txt
2.Look for lines similar to the following:
Administrative console port: 9102 (Default is usually 9060)
Administrative console secure port: 9104 (Default is usually 9043)
Normal login is http://yourserver:9060/ibm/console
9. Logging into the old ST
environment via the Proxy
Can give you a false sense of task completion.
The proxy will look for ANY Sametime server out there,
not just the new one, unless you have set the following
items, after SSO is setup:
Adjusting user connections to the Sametime Proxy Server
Designating the Sametime Proxy Server to be used for awareness
10. Clean Up
Services only run when you login?
Running Sametime components as Windows services
Teach the Admins how to Start/Stop everything?
Starting and stopping servers in a Sametime deployment
Be VERY exact with syntax
Java cares about WASproxy not wasproxy
11. SSL Fun
External facing ST environments should be using SSL!
Wildcard SSLs are easier…
if you can find the documentation.
You will need to enable SSL for Domino and Websphere
How do you do it?
These 3 blogs will help from Ben, Gabriella, and Mats
Be very careful to add the certs to the right places and in
the right order
12. Installation all Finished! Well….
Now comes the fun parts:
• New Client Installations
• Embedded, Stand Alone, and Devices
• Latest Code at time of install
• Client Reconfiguration
• New server URL and/or logins
• Plugins and Add-ons
• Make sure everything is updated
• Need more Emoticons for ST? Thank Robert here
• OS Issues
• Windows 10 is not quite like Windows 7
• Mac and Linux clients also have updates so plan and test
