1. Providing a helping hand to our patients By Kat Bokser CVN
2. Introduction Veterinary Nurses are getting more and more involved in the running of the clinic and are becoming well respected members of the community. All this has been achieved by each individual Veterinary Nurse going the extra mile to help clients and their pets. Veterinary nurses will wipe away the tears of a crying pet, hold them tight when they are in pain and worried and hold their paw on the last leg of their journey. Vet nurses are there to hold the clients hand when they are presented with bad news, they are there to carry sick pets to and from cars and they are always there to give support to their clients and pets.

4. Dogs with Heart Disease ClinicTo show you how these clinic would be run, I would like to introduce you an outline of the Dogs with Heart Disease clinic.
5. Introduction Dogs with Heart Disease Over the past few months while working at Kat’s Pet Hospital I have got to know some of our very precious heart disease patients and learned that they are very special pets and need attention and care. I have developed relationships with these pets and their owners and always look forward to seeing them. The sensitive nature of heart disease has made me realise that I would like us at Kat’s Hospital give these pets and their owners a helping hand in dealing with heart disease and understanding what heart disease means for their pet.
10. Give clients an opportunity to meet other people whose pets suffer from Heart Disease.
11. Create a support network for clients with Dogs that suffer from heart disease.
12. Give clients an opportunity to talk about their concerns about their pets illness with a Qualified Nurse.
13. Give dogs that suffer from heart disease an opportunity to meet other dogs.
14. Create a great rapport between clients and clinic staff.
15. Provide help and support to clients that have dogs with heart disease.
16. Provide clients with an opportunity to discuss their pets’ medication and pick up their repeat medication.
17.
18. Cost I would like to provide Dogs with Heart Disease clinic to clients for free. The running costs of this clinic are relatively low. The only expenses will be: Veterinary Nurse’s time Utilising the clinic after-hours Occasional biscuits and tea Dog treats
19. Sponsors For best results for Dogs with Heart Disease Clinic I would like to involve some sponsors to help us and the patients. Here are some ideas: Vetmedin is the most prescribed heart medication at Kat’s Pet Hospital and depending on concentration can be very expensive to buy for the client. Because this drug generates a substantial revenue for the clinic and the drug company I think it would be a great idea if this drug company would provide some form of sponsorship for Dogs with Heart Disease clinic. It could be either biscuits, toys or treats or special offers on heart medication. Diurin is the second most often prescribed drug for dogs with heart disease. Although relatively cost effective this drug still adds to the bill the client pays for their dog’s heart medication. Pet food companies would be great sponsors for Dogs with Heart Disease Clinic as well. Most of these patients will already be on good quality senior diets to help prolong the life of their internal organs, bones and cognitive function.
20. How will all this start? As a Veterinary Nurse at Kat’s Pet Hospital I already know quite a few of our clients who have dogs with heart disease and I will directly approach them with this idea when they come in for their medication. The rest of the clients will be contacted via phone. There will also be posters up at the waiting area to promote Dogs with Heart Disease Clinic. Some of our heart disease patients are very old and will be unable to come to the clinic so I will suggest that owners come along anyway as this will be a good opportunity to meet people that are in the same situation as themselves.
