2. What is SmartMusic?
▪ SmartMusic is a software program that allows the student to
practice their musical assignments with an electronic tuner,
metronome and digital sheet music.
▪ The SmartMusic program also allows the students to record
their performance and then provides a detailed analysis of
the student’s errors. The music teacher can print out the
student’s performance analysis for assessment purposes.
3. Features of SmartMusic
▪ SmartMusic offers the user a variety of key features that
can help improve the student’s performance in the
classroom as well as in the recital hall.

4. SmartMusic Feature: Adjust Tempo
▪ Teachers can control the tempo of assignments
using this key feature of the SmartMusic
program.
5. SmartMusic Feature: Assessment
▪ The SmartMusic program’s assessment feature will display
the notes the student performs; the correct notes appear in
green while inaccurate notes appear in red.
6. SmartMusic Feature: Exercises
▪ SmartMusic offers more than 50,000 scales, interval,
arpeggio and rhythm excersises for students.
▪ SmartMusic allows the educator and student to customize the
exercise to any key and articulation. There is also an onscreen assessment and grading tool with this feature.
7. SmartMusic Feature: Transpose
▪ The transpose feature on SmartMusic allows the student to
match music to vocal range, play vocal music on any
instrument and practice jazz tunes in any key.
8. SmartMusic Feature: Fingering Chart
▪ This feature allows the
student to click on the onscreen fingering chart to
obtain the fingering for any
note if that they are unsure
of.
9. SmartMusic Feature: Play by Ear
▪ This feature develops the student’s ability to play by ear. According to
the SmartMusic website:
1. Students listen to SmartMusic play a phrase.
2. They play the phrase back as accurately as possible.
3. SmartMusic assesses what was played and shows correct notes and
mistakes so that students can improve.
4. Students can submit a recording and assessment grade to their
instructor.
