3. Introduction
• Nutraceutical product is a food or fortified food
product that not only supplements the diet but
also assists in treating or preventing disease (apart
from anemia), so provides medical benefits.
• Nutraceuticals are not tested and regulated to the
extent of pharmaceutical drugs. The word
nutraceutical is combined from the words
nutrition and pharmaceutical.
4. Nutraceutical Types
Nutraceuticals can also be categorized as traditional nutraceuticals and nontraditional
nutraceuticals :
• Traditional nutraceuticals are natural foods that contain several natural components
that deliver benefits beyond basic nutrition, such as lycopene in tomatoes, omega-3
fatty acids in salmon, resveratrol in grapes, or saponins in soy beans.
• Nontraditional nutraceuticals are artificial foods prepared by adding bioactive
components for well-being of humans. It can be subdivided into fortified and
recombinant nutraceuticals.
5. • Fortified nutraceuticals are the food with agricultural breeding or with added
nutrients. Orange juice with calcium, cereals with added vitamins or minerals,
flour with added folic acid, and milk with cholecalciferol are some of the
examples of fortified nutraceuticals.
• Energy-providing foods such as bread, alcohol, fermented starch, yogurt,
cheese, vinegar, and others that are produced with the help of biotechnology
are called recombinant nutraceuticals.

• 1- Nutrients : Substances which have established
Nutritional fxn. Example – Vitamins , Minerals ,
Amino Acids etc.
• 2- Herbals/Phytochemicals : Herbs or Botanical
Products.
• 3- Dietary Supplements : Probiotics, Probiotics,
Antioxidants, Enzymes .
