SANGAMANER(MAHARASTRA)
Sangamaner 5th July : Maharastra’s Sangamaner SSK
Samaj held Youth Meet at the Sahasrarjuna Mangal Karyalaya
on the 4th of July. The Sangamaner Samaj proudly recalls
the first national community session held at Amaravati in
1916 and the Samaj is all set to celebrate the centenary of
the event. To discuss the preparations to be made for the
centenary celebration, the Youth Meet was held here recently.
The president of the Sangamaner Samaj Jayavantsa Pawar
and the secretary Sandeepsa Chauhan are eager to make this
event memorable.
The youth meet was a grand success. Sangamner’s SSK
Samaj and Youth Association had jointly organized a Youth
Meet. It was intended to serve as human resource mobilizations
to organize a national level meet of the community to
commemorate the centenary of such an event.
The Youth Meet was well attended and a huge number of
youths from all over the district had gathered at Sangamaner.
The elderly person Damamji had presided over the function.
Sureshsa Burbure of Sholapur was the chief guest. He called
upon the youth to spare sometime in a day or week for the
service of society. He asked the youth not to take up social
service for the sake of making name. Social service should be
motivated by selflessness.

History of Somavamsha Shasrarjun Kshatriya. PANCHANGA SUMMARY
8.PUSHYA (PUSHYAMI) NAKSHATRA
Murlidharsa F. Kalburgi
Editorial
Let’s concentrate on strengthening
the bonds of relations.
Certain news items in our
newspaper have been catching
our imagination and prompting
us to take the clues from them.
Especially since the beginning of
this decade, our Samaj units have
been widening the range of their
activities to social and cultural
fields with a vision.
Sangamner ( in Maharastra )
unit of the SSK Samaj is gearing up
to organize a national meet of the
SSK Community to commemorate
the Meet organized in 1916 by their
district. The youths of Sangamner
have now resolved to unite the
people of our Community in
their surroundings extending the
borders beyond their district. This
augurs well for the Community
as it gives the message to the
broader Community to think
of strengthening the bonds of
relations.
The Gadag city’s units of the
Samaj have formed a district level
association of the SSK Community
to strengthen the bonds of
relations and to empower the
poor and educationally backward
among the Community. The
Individuals now have to face the
new challenges in the changing
socio-economic scenario.
Our prime concern should
be on shaping the younger
generations to cope up with the
changing needs and necessities.
The Samaj units should initiate
the plan of actions to supplement
the pedagogic knowledge and
training. The ethical aspects
should be stressed to broaden
their vision in their growing years.
We have to inculcate in them
the ideal behavioral norms. They
should be trained to develop a
healthy and positive outlook of
life. They should be guided to
choose vocations that suit their
interests and temperaments.
The younger people should
know the socio-economic problems
that are ailing our society. They
should know how to defend
themselves against all the possible
dangers and natural calamities.
They should be taught to use the
modern means of comfort with
due restraint. Children and youth
should learn to use television, and
vehicles with great restraint. They
should be fully informed of the
safety rules and regulations and
about the dangers posed by the
internet means.
Enhancement of personality
should be our main objective. The
essential knowledge of our past
history should be revealed to them.
The Samaj organization units
should prepare a plan of action
to feed the required knowledge
and to instruct the necessary
things. Efforts must be made to
provide projectors to the schools
and colleges of our Community to
impart the training and knowledge
through audio-visual aids.
The children of one place
should meet their counterparts
from the different places. A District
meet of the children of different
age-groups may be arranged
annually. The Samaj units of
the various places can host such
meets. Such of the programmes
will help to broaden the mental
horizon of the children.
The organization units at the
district level should concentrate
on activities of empowerment of
children and women. The poorest
and poor families should be helped
to avail the governmental facilities.
The lessons of self-dependence
and self-reliance should be taught.
Instruction and inspiration will do
the help. Our financial resources
may be meager but we should
have the Will.
The expected social changes in
the lives of our people should be
properly grasped and we have to
instruct the volunteers and social
workers about all this. The vision
should be clear before we get on
to work. We call upon the leaders
and intellectuals of our Community
to express their views, ideas and
tips. The SSK Times will provide
space for publishing such views.
Let us all think of strengthening the
bonds of healthy and affectionate
relations among the people of our
Community. Let us all think of
discovering our roots and enhance
our self-esteem.

Nagai Inscription
Nagai inscription tells us that
sree Nagai Elambha (Yallamma)
was the fond goddess of royal
worship. The Chalukyas of
Badami and Kalyani, Rastrakutas
and the Kalachuri Chalukyas
(Haihaya) worshipped goddess
Nagai Elambha. The name of
the goddess ‘Nagai’ is composed
of two words – Naga + Aai.
‘Aai’ in marathi means ‘mother’.
‘Elambha’ means ‘elderly
mother’. The word ‘Elambha’ may
have been turned in practice as
‘Ellamma’ in kannada language.
The temple of Elembha is in
the village of Nagai in Kalburgi
district’s Chitapur taluka. The
temple was built by the Chalukyas
in the Kalyani Chalukyas’ style.
There is a compound wall around
the temple. The big entrance door,
the mahamantapa in front of the
‘garbhagriha’ are quite attractive
and you sense the ‘serene calm’.
The two streams of water in front
of the garbhagriha mark the
specialty of the temple. On the two
sides of the ‘garbhagriha’ outside
are two ponds and the water
flowing from the two streams of
water continues throughout the
year and the water in the pond is
used for irrigation purposes. This
temple looks like Banashanakari
temple of Badami. In front of the
temple is a small temple and its
platform is in the shape of kedige
or ketake (gagan-dhul). People
stung by snakes and scorpions
are brought here and the popular
belief is that by going the round
the temple, the effect of the
poison can be mitigated.
There is the Jain Agrahar
behind the temple of Nagai. It
is a beautiful site and it is said
that there was here a Sanskrit
University in the past. The pillars
of this Jain Temple look in straight
lines viewed from any angle. The
architecture is amazing. There
is a pond of azure waters beside
this temple and its source is
hidden. The Chalukya rulers have
left behind them these great
heritages and we who belong to
their clan should feel proud of
these heritages of the past.
There is an interesting
thing about the statue of Nagai
Ellamma. The statue is not in the
straight -line of the entrance. It
is placed to the right side and
the devotees cannot see it right
in front of them standing at the
entrance. So every year on the
festive days such as of Dasara
and full-moon days, the ‘utsav
murthy’ is consecrated right in
the middle of entrance. This
practice is said to have been in
vogue for the last two decades
or so. Recently the newly carven
beautiful statue in the black stone
is consecrated.
There is a temple of Naga
Ellamma in Nagavi, a village
in the Gadag taluka of Gadag
district. The temple is built on hill.
Its entrance is to the west. The
goddess with the four hands and
the blessing-posed palm looks
beautiful and attractive.
In the precincts (surrounding
area) of this temple, there is a
temple of Durga (Ambabhavani)
and the goddess has eight hands.
The temple faces east. It is said
that the king Nagarjuna who
owed allegiance to the
Kalyani Chalukyas ruled
Kalasapur region.
Kalasapur is now
a village found
between Gadag
and Nagavi. The
Jaina followers
lived in quite a good
number and there in
Kalasapur was installed
‘a digambar’ statue which
is popularly called as
‘dinni devaru’ (diety
of hillock). The ruler
Nagarjuna may
have built the temple of Nagai.
Nage Ellamma is the
clan-goddess of the Siddling
families of Gadag, Hubli and
Kolhapur and of the Solanki
families of Gadag. It is said that
probably during the Rajakars
atrocious attacks, the devotees
might have shifted the statue of
Nagai Ellamma from Chittapur
(Kalburgi) to Nagavi.
Sree Nagai Elambha is the
clan goddess of the various SSK
families of Gadag, Hubballi,
Gudur, Ilkal, Bagilukote,
Hanumasagar, Guledgudda,
Gajendragada, Kalburgi in
Karnataka state and kodamoor,
Hyderabad, Secundarabad,
Nandyal, Karnool in Andhra state
and Sholapur, Kolhapur, Satara
and elsewhere in Maharastra
state. The Solanki, Siddling,
Kalburgi, Chavan, Ture (Rao),
Burbure families worship this
goddess as their clan-goddess.
