Folk dances developed naturally from the everyday lives and activities of the people. They include national dances unique to a country as well as regional and character dances. Teaching Philippine folk dances aims to foster patriotism, appreciation of Philippine music and dance, health, improved posture, and preservation of indigenous dances and music. Characteristics of Philippine folk dances include dancers standing apart, little bodily contact, pairs or couples dancing, important hand movements, long formations, and beginning and ending with "saludo."
