Lesson 4. Teach Us to Pray (Murray Lessons 1, 7, 20, and 25)
John R. Wible, Editor
I. Fellowship Time – recording of prayer requests.
II. Prayer of Introduction - John
III. From With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray1
Apart from the Lord’s Prayer, what few practical "rules" for praying that Jesus did offer can be reduced to
three slogans: keep it secret (Matt. 6:5-6) , keep it uninflated (Mart. 6:7-8) and, with dogged confidence,
keep it up (Luke 11:5-13; Luke 18:1-5; Matt. 7:7-11; Mark 11:23-24). 2
Lesson 1. “Lord, Teach us to Pray” or “The Only Teacher.” page 9.
It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His
disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1.
The disciples had been with Christ and had seen Him pray. They learned that He was the Master
at prayer and they wanted to be like that. So, the asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.”3 If we
want to be His disciples, we must ask the same question of Him. [But, be prepared for the
answer.]
Prayer at its simplest is such that a child can do it, but at its height, it is the highest and holiest
thing a person can do. It is the essence of true religion, the channel of all blessings and the
secret of power and life. It is on prayer that God has given us the right to take hold of His
promises and to wait on the fulfillment of the Kingdom. Only God’s Spirit can enable us to do it
and do it right. If we ask Him, He will gladly do it.
But, it is a mistake to simply “rest in the form.” We ourselves must enter into the conversation
with our whole heart.
Q: Is this easy or hard? Why?
Counterintuitively, Murray states that at first, it seems easy but later it becomes a work more
and more difficult. The more we learn that we need to pray, the more we learn that we need
also for the Spirit to teach us more and more. Our prayer will reveal our struggles with doubt
1 This is a summary of Murray’s work. No claimis madeby the Editor to original work.

time.

and fear, that’s why it gets harder. But, says Murray, it is in that struggle that the “heavenly art
of prayer is learnt.”
[Keller would add that as we learn this, we learn that it is not the goal that is the essence of
prayer, but the relationship with God.]4
Jesus has entrusted to us the work of the Kingdom. It can only be accomplished in prayer.
[Work is done with our knees as well as our hands. And we have only one job to do – Glorify
God.] 5
It is the Holy Spirit living in us that teaches us to Pray. He first shows us our sin. [Perhaps, we
can’t get to much more prayer unless we first deal with the sin issue in our lives.]6
Q: God wants us to pray. If this is so, what, then is wrong with praying for those things we want
and need? Is it a matter, not of praying, but of our heart?
Jesus never taught the disciples how to preach, but how to pray. Being able to speak
appropriately with God is more important than speaking to men – though that’s important, too.
The following are observations from the class.7
Ronald Goetz8 gives three “rules” for prayer: Keep it secret (Matt. 6:5-6); keep it uninflated
(Matt. 6: 7-8); and with “dogged confidence,” keep it up (Luke 11:5-13, 18:1-5, Matt: 7:7-11,
Mark 11:23-24)
As the disciples did, we need to ask Jesus to teach us to pray. He is willing and waiting for us to
ask. He is available and ready. All we have to do is ask. Do we [really]9 want to go deeper with
our prayers? Do we want to have depth to our prayer? God wants us to.
God is ALL powerful. He gives us the right to utilize that power through prayer. We pray to
God the Father through Jesus Christ who, through the Holy Spirit speaks to us and provides the
power. It does not come from us, it flows through us from God.
[Let us not have] “Spiritual arrogance” - trying to figure God out. We discussed how we have
tried to intellectualize and dissect God. The conclusion is [that] we cannot and do not have to …
we just don’t have to know everything: Deuteronomy 29:29.

By faith, we can accept [the spiritual fact] that our minds cannot fully comprehend God. [This,
however, is not to say that we cannot know God, for He wants to be known.]10
Dana stated that she had an “ah ha” moment when she realized in a college history class that
the “stories” of the Bible were actual, historical events and facts. This was huge discovery.
John stated that this morning, he felt two words in his spirit – “fearful arrogance”… maybe we
are afraid to pray because of what we may find out or what God may tell us. 11
Murray, at page 10, states that when we ask, what we ask must be to the Glory of God. We
must:
 fully surrender to Gods will
 have full assurance of faith
 ask in the name of Jesus (not magic words)
 have perseverance
God wants us to ask Him to teach us to pray. Prayer is an art and is learned. This implies
lessons, practice, discipline, growing.
Questions to consider: How do we effectively pray? What prayers move heaven and earth?
Dr. Howard Olive, missionary to the Philippines in charge of radio and print evangelismand
Doug Olive’s father (Doug Olive being the first pastor for Gateway) spoke of how God
sometimes speaks directly through the Bible - His Word.
Question: The mother who prays for her son for years, finally the son accepts Jesus, would the
son have never accepted Jesus if she did not prayed, or did not pray long enough? [It has been
explained that] God knew before time, that this mother would pray for her son and therefore
the son was one of the “elect”- this being a Calvinistic thought. [A discussion of some of the
tenets of Calvinismensued.]
Irresistible Grace – [One of Calvin’s “Five Points” whereby] God puts out the invitation, He calls
us, and we have to but answer. He puts the desire to answer within us. We “hear” because He
calls. [According to the tenet, if God calls, the call is irresistible, meaning that those that God
calls will answer affirmatively. We agreed that not all hold to this principle and some matters
are best left to theologians or to God.]

Finally, in prayer, ask, be willing to learn to pray but don’t ask someone else, ask the one who
knows - Jesus. Jesus “learned” to pray while He was here on earth. He showed us how to pray.
[And how to learn to pray.] Now He is at the right hand of the Father in Heaven [still] praying,
interceding for us. Jesus is praying for us still!
Lesson 7. “How Much More?” or “The All-Comprehensive Gift,” page 31.
13
If youthen, beingevil, knowhow togive goodgiftstoyourchildren, how muchmore will your
heavenlyFathergive the HolySpirittothose whoaskHim?” – Luke 11:13.
In Matthew’s rendition of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about how much more God
desires to give to His children. Here in Luke, that “How much More?” is not a thing or things,
the gift is the Holy Spirit – from whom comes all other gifts. That being the case, it is the Holy
Spirit whom we should want first of all in our prayers.
Not sanctification, not Heaven, not any other good thing, the Holy Spirit , alone is the “Promise
of the Father” because it is only through His power that we can enter into the presence of the
Father on Earth or in Heaven and can bring our other petitions.
The greatest gift a father can give his child is his spirit, a bit of who he is [assuming, of course,
that his spirit is one that would be desirable to pass on.]12 If the child is to succeed in life, it
must be influenced by that beneficent spirit of the father. How much more so with the
Heavenly Father?
We know that that Spirit was with Jesus throughout His life and ministry. Through that Spirit,
the Father “educated” the Son, Jesus, on what He must do and how he must do it. It is that
same Spirit that educates us. Thus, the Holy Spirit is the Promise of the Father to the exclusion
of all other promises. Jesus’ sacrifice enabled the Father to give us His Spirit. What a blessing! It
is because of that sacrifice that we, through the Spirit, can not only enter into the presence of
the Father, but can cry out “Abba, Father,” thus showing that we know the Father personally as
a son.
Since this is the case, then to seek out the Holy Spirit should be our first exercise in prayer
because He is the key to everything else. In the variety of gifts the Holy Spirit then dispenses,
we have all we need – grace, faith, adoption, truth, prayer itself, judgment (not condemnation,
though,) holiness, power, glory. In fact, all we really need at the core, is the Holy Spirit, the
Kingdom of Heaven or God living in us.
We are reminded of Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven, and all these shall be
added unto you.” We know that at salvation, we receive the Holy Spirit, but we continually
need “refillings” just as a tree branch needs constant sap from the tree.

[When Jesus told many people in His ministry that the “Kingdom of Heaven” was at hand, He
meant He was near. Through His sacrifice, the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus is at hand in us
through this Holy Spirit.]13
[Here is something difficult for me to grasp. God wants us to pray to Him and for His filling of
the Holy Spirit and for our needs. We are not “bothering” Him when we do this, we are blessing
Him.
Q: Why do you think this is? Is it low self-esteemby which we have believed the lie of Satan
that we are not deserving of an audience with the Father, let alone the privilege of asking for
His favor? Is it the reverse of this – pride, the equally false idea that we can handle our own life
and we don’t really need Him?
The answermay lie inour feelings. If we are actingonour feeling,we will prayamiss,if atall. If
however,we recognizethatwe are askingforspiritual things thatcan onlybe giveninthe Spirit, then
we are on the righttrack.]14
Murray urges usto pray believingseveral things.
 That by faith,whatI askis mine – the giftof the HolySpirit;
 That in thanksgiving,we knowthatwe have beenheardbyGodHimself andwe can readilytake
holdof what we asked;
 Throughthis, the prayer turnsintoan experience withGodwhichisthe greaterreward.
 The Father desirestogive usHisHolySpiritbutmost, saysMurray, whenwe pray forothers.
The following are observations from the class.15
Discussion on the Trinity... There are three separate/yet same/separate persons of the Trinity.
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. All are fully God, fully separate, fully
equal, eternal, persons. Some people look at God the Father [as] being “more God” than the
others. Some are looking at Jesus as being the only God and others part of Him, with the Holy
Spirit being a manifestation of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is not a manifestation of Jesus. This is not
biblical. In John 14, Jesus begins to tell the disciples He will be leaving, but he will send [in the
Greek, the paracletos,] the helper, comforter, counselor [, or advocate,] “One who comes along
side.” Through Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes from God the Father. The Holy Spirit was
introduced to the disciples by Jesus - John 20, Acts 2, Acts 4, and Acts 13. The “Gift” and the
“Promise” were given.
Romans 8:26 states that the best gift of the Father is to give Himself to his children. [In
receiving this, we get] the total package. In Ephesians 2, spiritually speaking we are seated in

Lesson 4. Teach Us to Pray (Murray Lessons 1, 7, 20, and 25) John R. Wible, Editor I. Fellowship Time – recording of prayer requests. II. Prayer of Introduction - John III. From With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray1 Apart from the Lord’s Prayer, what few practical "rules" for praying that Jesus did offer can be reduced to three slogans: keep it secret (Matt. 6:5-6) , keep it uninflated (Mart. 6:7-8) and, with dogged confidence, keep it up (Luke 11:5-13; Luke 18:1-5; Matt. 7:7-11; Mark 11:23-24). 2 Lesson 1. “Lord, Teach us to Pray” or “The Only Teacher.” page 9. It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1. The disciples had been with Christ and had seen Him pray. They learned that He was the Master at prayer and they wanted to be like that. So, the asked Him, “Lord, teach us to pray.”3 If we want to be His disciples, we must ask the same question of Him. [But, be prepared for the answer.] Prayer at its simplest is such that a child can do it, but at its height, it is the highest and holiest thing a person can do. It is the essence of true religion, the channel of all blessings and the secret of power and life. It is on prayer that God has given us the right to take hold of His promises and to wait on the fulfillment of the Kingdom. Only God’s Spirit can enable us to do it and do it right. If we ask Him, He will gladly do it. But, it is a mistake to simply “rest in the form.” We ourselves must enter into the conversation with our whole heart. Q: Is this easy or hard? Why? Counterintuitively, Murray states that at first, it seems easy but later it becomes a work more and more difficult. The more we learn that we need to pray, the more we learn that we need also for the Spirit to teach us more and more. Our prayer will reveal our struggles with doubt 1 This is a summary of Murray’s work. No claimis madeby the Editor to original work. 2 Goetz, Ronald.“Lord, Teach Us to Pray (Luke 11:1-4.)” Religion Online. http://www.religion- online.org/showarticle.asp?title=1064 .Accessed 1/31/15. 3 Editor’s note. It I my understandingthat itwas customary for disciplesto ask this question of their teacher in this time.

But, says Murray, it is in that struggle that the “heavenly art of prayer is learnt.” [Keller would add that as we learn this, we learn that it is not the goal that is the essence of prayer, but the relationship with God.]4 Jesus has entrusted to us the work of the Kingdom. It can only be accomplished in prayer. [Work is done with our knees as well as our hands. And we have only one job to do – Glorify God.] 5 It is the Holy Spirit living in us that teaches us to Pray. He first shows us our sin. [Perhaps, we can’t get to much more prayer unless we first deal with the sin issue in our lives.]6 Q: God wants us to pray. If this is so, what, then is wrong with praying for those things we want and need? Is it a matter, not of praying, but of our heart? Jesus never taught the disciples how to preach, but how to pray. Being able to speak appropriately with God is more important than speaking to men – though that’s important, too. The following are observations from the class.7 Ronald Goetz8 gives three “rules” for prayer: Keep it secret (Matt. 6:5-6); keep it uninflated (Matt. 6: 7-8); and with “dogged confidence,” keep it up (Luke 11:5-13, 18:1-5, Matt: 7:7-11, Mark 11:23-24) As the disciples did, we need to ask Jesus to teach us to pray. He is willing and waiting for us to ask. He is available and ready. All we have to do is ask. Do we [really]9 want to go deeper with our prayers? Do we want to have depth to our prayer? God wants us to. God is ALL powerful. He gives us the right to utilize that power through prayer. We pray to God the Father through Jesus Christ who, through the Holy Spirit speaks to us and provides the power. It does not come from us, it flows through us from God. [Let us not have] “Spiritual arrogance” - trying to figure God out. We discussed how we have tried to intellectualize and dissect God. The conclusion is [that] we cannot and do not have to … we just don’t have to know everything: Deuteronomy 29:29. 4 Editor’s comment. 5 Id. 6 Id. 7 This lesson was led by Donna Spivey with inserts froma number of classmembers. 8 See Goetz, supra. at note 2. 9 Editor.

By faith, we can accept [the spiritual fact] that our minds cannot fully comprehend God. [This, however, is not to say that we cannot know God, for He wants to be known.]10 Dana stated that she had an “ah ha” moment when she realized in a college history class that the “stories” of the Bible were actual, historical events and facts. This was huge discovery. John stated that this morning, he felt two words in his spirit – “fearful arrogance”… maybe we are afraid to pray because of what we may find out or what God may tell us. 11 Murray, at page 10, states that when we ask, what we ask must be to the Glory of God. We must:  fully surrender to Gods will  have full assurance of faith  ask in the name of Jesus (not magic words)  have perseverance God wants us to ask Him to teach us to pray. Prayer is an art and is learned. This implies lessons, practice, discipline, growing. Questions to consider: How do we effectively pray? What prayers move heaven and earth? Dr. Howard Olive, missionary to the Philippines in charge of radio and print evangelismand Doug Olive’s father (Doug Olive being the first pastor for Gateway) spoke of how God sometimes speaks directly through the Bible - His Word. Question: The mother who prays for her son for years, finally the son accepts Jesus, would the son have never accepted Jesus if she did not prayed, or did not pray long enough? [It has been explained that] God knew before time, that this mother would pray for her son and therefore the son was one of the “elect”- this being a Calvinistic thought. [A discussion of some of the tenets of Calvinismensued.] Irresistible Grace – [One of Calvin’s “Five Points” whereby] God puts out the invitation, He calls us, and we have to but answer. He puts the desire to answer within us. We “hear” because He calls. [According to the tenet, if God calls, the call is irresistible, meaning that those that God calls will answer affirmatively. We agreed that not all hold to this principle and some matters are best left to theologians or to God.] 10 Editor. 11 The Editor leaves itto the reader to perform your own “psychoanalysis”on this statement.

Finally, in prayer, ask, be willing to learn to pray but don’t ask someone else, ask the one who knows - Jesus. Jesus “learned” to pray while He was here on earth. He showed us how to pray. [And how to learn to pray.] Now He is at the right hand of the Father in Heaven [still] praying, interceding for us. Jesus is praying for us still! Lesson 7. “How Much More?” or “The All-Comprehensive Gift,” page 31. 13 If youthen, beingevil, knowhow togive goodgiftstoyourchildren, how muchmore will your heavenlyFathergive the HolySpirittothose whoaskHim?” – Luke 11:13. In Matthew’s rendition of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about how much more God desires to give to His children. Here in Luke, that “How much More?” is not a thing or things, the gift is the Holy Spirit – from whom comes all other gifts. That being the case, it is the Holy Spirit whom we should want first of all in our prayers. Not sanctification, not Heaven, not any other good thing, the Holy Spirit , alone is the “Promise of the Father” because it is only through His power that we can enter into the presence of the Father on Earth or in Heaven and can bring our other petitions. The greatest gift a father can give his child is his spirit, a bit of who he is [assuming, of course, that his spirit is one that would be desirable to pass on.]12 If the child is to succeed in life, it must be influenced by that beneficent spirit of the father. How much more so with the Heavenly Father? We know that that Spirit was with Jesus throughout His life and ministry. Through that Spirit, the Father “educated” the Son, Jesus, on what He must do and how he must do it. It is that same Spirit that educates us. Thus, the Holy Spirit is the Promise of the Father to the exclusion of all other promises. Jesus’ sacrifice enabled the Father to give us His Spirit. What a blessing! It is because of that sacrifice that we, through the Spirit, can not only enter into the presence of the Father, but can cry out “Abba, Father,” thus showing that we know the Father personally as a son. Since this is the case, then to seek out the Holy Spirit should be our first exercise in prayer because He is the key to everything else. In the variety of gifts the Holy Spirit then dispenses, we have all we need – grace, faith, adoption, truth, prayer itself, judgment (not condemnation, though,) holiness, power, glory. In fact, all we really need at the core, is the Holy Spirit, the Kingdom of Heaven or God living in us. We are reminded of Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven, and all these shall be added unto you.” We know that at salvation, we receive the Holy Spirit, but we continually need “refillings” just as a tree branch needs constant sap from the tree. 12 Id.

[When Jesus told many people in His ministry that the “Kingdom of Heaven” was at hand, He meant He was near. Through His sacrifice, the Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus is at hand in us through this Holy Spirit.]13 [Here is something difficult for me to grasp. God wants us to pray to Him and for His filling of the Holy Spirit and for our needs. We are not “bothering” Him when we do this, we are blessing Him. Q: Why do you think this is? Is it low self-esteemby which we have believed the lie of Satan that we are not deserving of an audience with the Father, let alone the privilege of asking for His favor? Is it the reverse of this – pride, the equally false idea that we can handle our own life and we don’t really need Him? The answermay lie inour feelings. If we are actingonour feeling,we will prayamiss,if atall. If however,we recognizethatwe are askingforspiritual things thatcan onlybe giveninthe Spirit, then we are on the righttrack.]14 Murray urges usto pray believingseveral things.  That by faith, whatI askis mine – the giftof the HolySpirit;  That in thanksgiving,we knowthatwe have beenheardbyGodHimself andwe can readilytake holdof what we asked;  Throughthis, the prayer turnsintoan experience withGodwhichisthe greaterreward.  The Father desirestogive usHisHolySpiritbutmost, saysMurray, whenwe pray forothers. The following are observations from the class.15 Discussion on the Trinity... There are three separate/yet same/separate persons of the Trinity. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. All are fully God, fully separate, fully equal, eternal, persons. Some people look at God the Father [as] being “more God” than the others. Some are looking at Jesus as being the only God and others part of Him, with the Holy Spirit being a manifestation of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is not a manifestation of Jesus. This is not biblical. In John 14, Jesus begins to tell the disciples He will be leaving, but he will send [in the Greek, the paracletos,] the helper, comforter, counselor [, or advocate,] “One who comes along side.” Through Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes from God the Father. The Holy Spirit was introduced to the disciples by Jesus - John 20, Acts 2, Acts 4, and Acts 13. The “Gift” and the “Promise” were given. Romans 8:26 states that the best gift of the Father is to give Himself to his children. [In receiving this, we get] the total package. In Ephesians 2, spiritually speaking we are seated in 13 Editor’s Comment. 14 Id. 15 This lesson was led by Carmen Falcionewith inserts from a number of classmembers.
