Learning Objectives
• To further develop our use of descriptive
vocabulary to keep the reader interested;
• Use descriptive language to describe how
different sweets taste;
• Design a new sweet you would sell in the
sweet shop;
• Assess the different vocabulary used.
The Bicycle and The Sweet Shop
Task 1
• Read the description of the sweet shop in The Bicycle
and The Sweet Shop and highlight all of the descriptions
used to describe the sweets.
Adjectives
Task 2
Take two different sweets and write a
descriptive sentence about how they taste.
My example: Chocolate éclair: When you open the
wrapper, the smell is inviting. It is hard when you
pop it in your mouth, but it soon becomes
soft and chewy. It has a slight vanilla
flavour and a creamy texture. What
surprises you is the chocolate centre
which melts in your mouth! Delicious!!!

Homework
• Using what you’ve discovered today, design a new sweet
you would sell in the sweet shop
• Think about:
• look, taste, smell, texture
• Hard, soft, chewy, soft centre,
flavoured centre
• Be as descriptive as you can –
really use your imagination!
• Draw your design, name your sweet
and write a detailed description in
your exercise books.

  • 1. Learning Objectives • To further develop our use of descriptive vocabulary to keep the reader interested; • Use descriptive language to describe how different sweets taste; • Design a new sweet you would sell in the sweet shop; • Assess the different vocabulary used.
  • 2. The Bicycle and The Sweet Shop Task 1 • Read the description of the sweet shop in The Bicycle and The Sweet Shop and highlight all of the descriptions used to describe the sweets.
  • 3. Adjectives Task 2 Take two different sweets and write a descriptive sentence about how they taste. My example: Chocolate éclair: When you open the wrapper, the smell is inviting. It is hard when you pop it in your mouth, but it soon becomes soft and chewy. It has a slight vanilla flavour and a creamy texture. What surprises you is the chocolate centre which melts in your mouth! Delicious!!!

  • 5. The Bicycle and The Sweet Shop Homework • Using what you’ve discovered today, design a new sweet you would sell in the sweet shop • Think about: • look, taste, smell, texture • Hard, soft, chewy, soft centre, flavoured centre • Be as descriptive as you can – really use your imagination! • Draw your design, name your sweet and write a detailed description in your exercise books.

Teacher to hand out two different sweets Ask the children to eat one of the sweets and write their descriptions while they are eating Remind the children to describe the sweets even if they don’t like the taste Scaffolding – offer a couple of examples as they taste to help those who are struggling Sentences should be as descriptive and imaginative as possible Remind them to use their senses – how does the sweet look? What does it feel like? What does it smell of? And finally what does it taste like?
