2. Preamble
• This section of the AUP explains to the user(s) why the policy
is needed.
• It should outline the: goals, the process used in developing the
AUP, & the code of conduct for students.
3. Section for Definitions
• This section defines key words used in the AUP document.
• Sometimes the words / terms explained seem simplistic but it
is critical to ensure all users are aware of the uniform
definition the organization has for each term.
• Some examples of terms that are often defined are:
• Internet
• Computer
• Network
• Education purpose
4. Policy Statement
• This section tells the user what computer services are
governed by the AUP as well as when students might be using
these services.
• The association or organization may require students to
complete some form of training or class based course before
being given access to technology.
5. Acceptable Uses Section
• This defines the appropriate parameters & limitations for
student use of technology.
• In this section specific purposes are often defined.
• For example an organization may define or limit usage of
technology only for academic / educational purposes.
6. Unacceptable Uses Section
• The AUP provides the user with clear and specific examples of
what would be a breach or unacceptable use of technology.
• The AUP should:
• Define what network / sites if any are limited to student use
• How students use / post / forward information and to what extent if
any
• If and what type of behaviour might be destructive to the network &
that this would be restricted
7. Violations / Consequences
• This section of the AUP should define for students / users
what happens when policy is breached.
