Profile
I have a wealth of database development experience including ten datawarehouse
projects, large and small, across several industrial sectors. As a key resource on
several end-to-end projects I have gained in-depth hands-on experience of every
aspect of datawarehouse development; from requirements gathering and dimensional
modeling through the ETL process to meta-data, report and dashboards development.
I enjoy all elements of this creative process and I am happy to fit in at any or all of
the steps along the way.

Work Experience
Motability Operations/Rittman Mead (London) 03/11-06/11 (Contract)
I have been fortunate to work on this major project to reengineer the company’s CRM and MI
systems. This work has included: Dimensional model design reviews, user requirement workshops,
OBIEE training for users and developers, all aspects of OBIEE development (11.1.1.5), recruitment
of MI staff, migration from 10g to 11g and implementing standards from OBIEE development.

CMC Markets/Rittman Mead (London/City) 06/10 –12/10 (Contract)
My second stint at CMC with Rittman Mead. Continuing with further expansion of their
OWB/OBIEE datawarehouse.

An Post/Fujitsu/The Hackett Group (Dublin) 09/09-05/10 (Contract)
I worked with the top USA BI Consultancy on the biggest OBIEE project in Ireland. I did the
OBIEE RPD/Dashboard/Report development on this complex ODI/OBIEE/Sharepoint project. This
replaced their old Essbase MI system and well established spread-sheet culture. The project was
extremely challenging due to many data issues, late requirement changes and multiple parallel
development streams. I implemented over 300 KPI reports across dashboards and briefing books, all
within a multiple group-based OBI security system which I developed.

CMC Markets/Rittman Mead (London/City) 05/09 – 09/09 (Contract)
I worked with the top UK OWB/OBIEE Consultancy on a project for this leading spread-betting
company. I developed the ETL process in OWB to feed their large partitioned table datawarehouse
and developed the OBIEE Answers environment, including many reports and dashboards.

BT/Protocallone/Teamsolve (Birmingham) 01/09 – 03/09 & 06/09 (Contract)
I was the main resource on this end-to-end project for a Telecom Call-centre management Datamart.
I developed all the OWB ETL mappings, OBIEE RPD (Physical, Business & Presentation),
Answers reports and Dashboards. In addition I produced all the technical documentation and
trained the support staff in OWB and OBIEE.

BT/Steria (London) 10/08-12/08 (Contract: 1 extension)
I was working within the Architecture team on a financial Datawarehouse for British Telcom. This
was an Oracle/PL-SQL/OWB/OBIEE project. My main tasks were to design and build the ETL
process for a ragged hierarchy within the OBIEE reporting system. I did this in OWB and PL/SQL
and tested it by developing OBIEE Answers reports.

UIA Insurance (Stevenage) 08/07-09/08 (Contract: 13 months, 3 extensions) & 06/10 (2 weeks)
I was responsible for the design and development of a new MI system for UIA’s Policy, Claims and
financial data. The key source systems were TIA for the policy and claims data and Great Plains for
the general ledger data. The system replaced previous attempts using Cognos and hundreds of
manually prepared spread-sheets. I did the ETL development in PL/SQL using Toad, SQL-Loader,
Heterogeneous Links, External tables and Windows scripts. For the front-end I used OBISE1 (The
small business version of OBIEE). After their initial training in Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB),
the development team decided instead to use my ready-made framework of PL/SQL ETL routines.
The initial subject area was delivered within 3 months including the training of the development
team in OBISE1 development. The dashboards and reports were available on the company’s
intranet and were used on a regular basis in management meetings throughout the company. The
Answers query environment was used by the Marketing, Pricing and Finance departments to perform
complex ad-hoc trend analysis. I personally trained many of the users to use Answers and mentored
the three development staff in all aspects of Datawarehouse design and maintenance. It was a most
enjoyable end-to-end project and was well received by the users.

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (Slough) 06/05-07/07 (Contract: 25 months, 7 extensions)
I was asked to take on the maintenance of 5 legacy datawarehouses at this major pharmaceutical
company after their Data Architect left. The main application for these systems was the monitoring
of their salesforce activity. Most of the data came from their Phoenix Sybase salesforce management
system and Hyperion (Essbase). With over 600 tables, views and materialized-views in several layers
of design and no effective documentation, the system could no longer be changed in the timeframe
required. I proposed a new unified simple design based on a classic Kimball Star Schema with types
1 & 2 slowly changing dimensions. After careful consideration the management gave me the go-

         John.m.lilley@btinternet.com Page 2 John Lilley 07930 342935
ahead. The new warehouse was implemented in Oracle 10g, PLSQL, Toad, Micro-Strategy and
Cybermation. It was ready to query in 6 months.

UIA/Tia Systems (London/Stevenage) 06/04-06/05 (Contract: 12 months)
I did most of the specification, design and build of the system migration software for this insurance
company. The company moved from a Progress/Green-screen-based system to a TIA/Oracle/Forms-
based system. I had to learn both systems from the inside out to achieve the migration mappings.
Using Visio to produce the ERDs, and PL/SQL and Toad for the coding, I developed a modular
migration system which incorporated internal step tracing and validation points. UIA were so pleased
with my work that they got me back to do their MI system (see above).

IMS Health ( London) 01/02 – 05/04 (Contract: 29 months, 4 extensions)
I was brought in to assess and tune their very large Pharmaceutical Sales datawarehouse. It
contained 5 years of NHS prescription data for the whole of the UK. Over 8 million records were
loaded each day. The design was a snowflake star schema with very large slowly changing
dimensions. I redesigned queries, indexes, partitioning and load scripts to optimize load validation
and data access. I used Oracle Designer and Erwin to map out the designs and evaluated the use of
Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) to maintain the system. In addition I designed, built and deployed
the Business Objects Universes and bespoke reports.

Fish4 (London) 02/01 - 12/01 (Contract: 11 months, 1 extension))
I was the development DBA on a large e-commence system. The database supported the Fish4
website which sold houses, cars and jobs. I maintained the development databases and assisted in the
development of load scripts for an MIS datawarehouse (BRIO the Business Objects clone) and
archiving system. In addition I was actively involved with all design changes, performance tuning
and upgrades to the live OPS (RAC) system.

Sun Microsystems (Camberley) 09/00 - 01/01 (Contract: 3 months)
I was a developer on a large sales and marketing datawarehouse system. I designed and developed all
of the ETL code in UNIX shell scripts and PL/SQL.

British Airways PLC (London) 03/00 - 09/00 (Contract: 6 months)
I was an Oracle Consultant on a large flight-staff rostering system. I designed and built several data
load scripts and supported the maintenance of the design repository. In addition I provided DBA
support for a JAVA front-ended cabin crew system.

British Medical Association (London) 01/00 - 02/00 (Contract: 1 month)
I was responsible for the migration and amalgamation of several Designer/2000 models supporting a
magazine subscription system. Designer had been used to generate the entire application. I had some
involvement in their datawarehouse development which used Informatica.

British Airways PLC (London) 07/98-12/99 (Contract: 18months, 2 extensions)
I was the Team Leader and DBA for an Oracle/Business Objects datawarehouse system for BA’s
Catering Supply Chain system. The source system was Manugistics. I designed and implemented the
database and all the ETL scripts in PL/SQL. In addition I maintained the Business Objects
Universes and reports for the front-end reporting system.

British Airways PLC (London) 09/97-07/98 (Contract: 9months, 2 extensions)
I was the support Analyst and DBA, responsible for supporting Oracle Designer/2000 and Rational-
Rose across the whole of British Airways. There were over 180 users developing over 300
applications for 60 projects across three sites. This work included all upgrade to Designer, DBA
activities, hardware changes and management of the users, help-desk, licenses, user-group and
intranet site.

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) (London) 03/95-09/97 (Permanent: 30 months)
I was a database consultant on a large GSM telephone billing system, a workflow management
system and landline management system. This involved a mixture of design, development and
project management work in London, Africa and the Middle-East. The landline system is still in use
today.

Lynx Holdings 02/89-02/95 (Permanent: 6 years)
I was a database consultant on a mortgage administration system that was implemented at major UK
Banks and building societies. My work covered the entire lifecycle from pre-sales support to
maintenance and enhancements. Most of my time was spent on-site in Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh,
London, Ipswich or Birmingham. I was jointly responsible for setting up a new Support Department,
servicing Clients using the Mortgage system.

British Aerospace 06/87-02/89 (Permanent: 21months)
I was jointly responsible for the design and management of 14 in-house database systems. These
systems included library, personnel, technical, management information and inventory databases.

Some of my LinkedIn recommendations.
John is the consummate BI and Data Warehouse professional. He has a wealth of knowledge and
passion for problem solving. He is patient with the clients and clearly explains his point of view and
solution options. He was an outstanding team member and leader on the An Post project, and I wish
that I could work with John on all of my projects!

Derek Huber (EPM Director, The Hackett Group) Hired John as IT Consultant in 2009

John has done an excellent piece of work in the design and delivery of our data warehouse. I would
highly recommend him to any other organisation or company.

Sheena McDonald (IS Manager UIA) Hired John as IT Consultant in 2008 , and hired John more
than once

When I first hired John it was for a 3 month assignment that turned into an ongoing re-engagement
lasting almost 2 years. Hiring John was one of the best decisions I made. The initial reason for his
engagement was to provide expertise to improve the performance of a complex sales and sales call
activity data warehouse. He rapidly assessed the design, queries and interfaces and developed an
action plan that was subsequently implemented. John has excellent technical knowledge and
expertise and works at keeping up to date. He worked well in my team with other DBA's and
developers and users. His work was of high quality. He always contributed in a positive way, yet was
always prepared to listen to others. Added to this John has a great sense of humour. A valuable team
member and a great guy to work with.”

Andy Lloyd (IT Manager Wyeth) Hired John as IT Consultant in 2005

  • 2. Work Experience Motability Operations/Rittman Mead (London) 03/11-06/11 (Contract) I have been fortunate to work on this major project to reengineer the company’s CRM and MI systems. This work has included: Dimensional model design reviews, user requirement workshops, OBIEE training for users and developers, all aspects of OBIEE development (11.1.1.5), recruitment of MI staff, migration from 10g to 11g and implementing standards from OBIEE development. CMC Markets/Rittman Mead (London/City) 06/10 –12/10 (Contract) My second stint at CMC with Rittman Mead. Continuing with further expansion of their OWB/OBIEE datawarehouse. An Post/Fujitsu/The Hackett Group (Dublin) 09/09-05/10 (Contract) I worked with the top USA BI Consultancy on the biggest OBIEE project in Ireland. I did the OBIEE RPD/Dashboard/Report development on this complex ODI/OBIEE/Sharepoint project. This replaced their old Essbase MI system and well established spread-sheet culture. The project was extremely challenging due to many data issues, late requirement changes and multiple parallel development streams. I implemented over 300 KPI reports across dashboards and briefing books, all within a multiple group-based OBI security system which I developed. CMC Markets/Rittman Mead (London/City) 05/09 – 09/09 (Contract) I worked with the top UK OWB/OBIEE Consultancy on a project for this leading spread-betting company. I developed the ETL process in OWB to feed their large partitioned table datawarehouse and developed the OBIEE Answers environment, including many reports and dashboards. BT/Protocallone/Teamsolve (Birmingham) 01/09 – 03/09 & 06/09 (Contract) I was the main resource on this end-to-end project for a Telecom Call-centre management Datamart. I developed all the OWB ETL mappings, OBIEE RPD (Physical, Business & Presentation), Answers reports and Dashboards. In addition I produced all the technical documentation and trained the support staff in OWB and OBIEE. BT/Steria (London) 10/08-12/08 (Contract: 1 extension) I was working within the Architecture team on a financial Datawarehouse for British Telcom. This was an Oracle/PL-SQL/OWB/OBIEE project. My main tasks were to design and build the ETL process for a ragged hierarchy within the OBIEE reporting system. I did this in OWB and PL/SQL and tested it by developing OBIEE Answers reports. UIA Insurance (Stevenage) 08/07-09/08 (Contract: 13 months, 3 extensions) & 06/10 (2 weeks) I was responsible for the design and development of a new MI system for UIA’s Policy, Claims and financial data. The key source systems were TIA for the policy and claims data and Great Plains for the general ledger data. The system replaced previous attempts using Cognos and hundreds of manually prepared spread-sheets. I did the ETL development in PL/SQL using Toad, SQL-Loader, Heterogeneous Links, External tables and Windows scripts. For the front-end I used OBISE1 (The small business version of OBIEE). After their initial training in Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB), the development team decided instead to use my ready-made framework of PL/SQL ETL routines. The initial subject area was delivered within 3 months including the training of the development team in OBISE1 development. The dashboards and reports were available on the company’s intranet and were used on a regular basis in management meetings throughout the company. The Answers query environment was used by the Marketing, Pricing and Finance departments to perform complex ad-hoc trend analysis. I personally trained many of the users to use Answers and mentored the three development staff in all aspects of Datawarehouse design and maintenance. It was a most enjoyable end-to-end project and was well received by the users. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (Slough) 06/05-07/07 (Contract: 25 months, 7 extensions) I was asked to take on the maintenance of 5 legacy datawarehouses at this major pharmaceutical company after their Data Architect left. The main application for these systems was the monitoring of their salesforce activity. Most of the data came from their Phoenix Sybase salesforce management system and Hyperion (Essbase). With over 600 tables, views and materialized-views in several layers of design and no effective documentation, the system could no longer be changed in the timeframe required. I proposed a new unified simple design based on a classic Kimball Star Schema with types 1 & 2 slowly changing dimensions. After careful consideration the management gave me the go- John.m.lilley@btinternet.com Page 2 John Lilley 07930 342935
  • 3. ahead. The new warehouse was implemented in Oracle 10g, PLSQL, Toad, Micro-Strategy and Cybermation. It was ready to query in 6 months. UIA/Tia Systems (London/Stevenage) 06/04-06/05 (Contract: 12 months) I did most of the specification, design and build of the system migration software for this insurance company. The company moved from a Progress/Green-screen-based system to a TIA/Oracle/Forms- based system. I had to learn both systems from the inside out to achieve the migration mappings. Using Visio to produce the ERDs, and PL/SQL and Toad for the coding, I developed a modular migration system which incorporated internal step tracing and validation points. UIA were so pleased with my work that they got me back to do their MI system (see above). IMS Health ( London) 01/02 – 05/04 (Contract: 29 months, 4 extensions) I was brought in to assess and tune their very large Pharmaceutical Sales datawarehouse. It contained 5 years of NHS prescription data for the whole of the UK. Over 8 million records were loaded each day. The design was a snowflake star schema with very large slowly changing dimensions. I redesigned queries, indexes, partitioning and load scripts to optimize load validation and data access. I used Oracle Designer and Erwin to map out the designs and evaluated the use of Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) to maintain the system. In addition I designed, built and deployed the Business Objects Universes and bespoke reports. Fish4 (London) 02/01 - 12/01 (Contract: 11 months, 1 extension)) I was the development DBA on a large e-commence system. The database supported the Fish4 website which sold houses, cars and jobs. I maintained the development databases and assisted in the development of load scripts for an MIS datawarehouse (BRIO the Business Objects clone) and archiving system. In addition I was actively involved with all design changes, performance tuning and upgrades to the live OPS (RAC) system. Sun Microsystems (Camberley) 09/00 - 01/01 (Contract: 3 months) I was a developer on a large sales and marketing datawarehouse system. I designed and developed all of the ETL code in UNIX shell scripts and PL/SQL. British Airways PLC (London) 03/00 - 09/00 (Contract: 6 months) I was an Oracle Consultant on a large flight-staff rostering system. I designed and built several data load scripts and supported the maintenance of the design repository. In addition I provided DBA support for a JAVA front-ended cabin crew system. British Medical Association (London) 01/00 - 02/00 (Contract: 1 month) I was responsible for the migration and amalgamation of several Designer/2000 models supporting a magazine subscription system. Designer had been used to generate the entire application. I had some involvement in their datawarehouse development which used Informatica. British Airways PLC (London) 07/98-12/99 (Contract: 18months, 2 extensions) I was the Team Leader and DBA for an Oracle/Business Objects datawarehouse system for BA’s Catering Supply Chain system. The source system was Manugistics. I designed and implemented the database and all the ETL scripts in PL/SQL. In addition I maintained the Business Objects Universes and reports for the front-end reporting system. British Airways PLC (London) 09/97-07/98 (Contract: 9months, 2 extensions) I was the support Analyst and DBA, responsible for supporting Oracle Designer/2000 and Rational- Rose across the whole of British Airways. There were over 180 users developing over 300 applications for 60 projects across three sites. This work included all upgrade to Designer, DBA activities, hardware changes and management of the users, help-desk, licenses, user-group and intranet site. • 5. Some of my LinkedIn recommendations. John is the consummate BI and Data Warehouse professional. He has a wealth of knowledge and passion for problem solving. He is patient with the clients and clearly explains his point of view and solution options. He was an outstanding team member and leader on the An Post project, and I wish that I could work with John on all of my projects! Derek Huber (EPM Director, The Hackett Group) Hired John as IT Consultant in 2009 John has done an excellent piece of work in the design and delivery of our data warehouse. I would highly recommend him to any other organisation or company. Sheena McDonald (IS Manager UIA) Hired John as IT Consultant in 2008 , and hired John more than once When I first hired John it was for a 3 month assignment that turned into an ongoing re-engagement lasting almost 2 years. Hiring John was one of the best decisions I made. The initial reason for his engagement was to provide expertise to improve the performance of a complex sales and sales call activity data warehouse. He rapidly assessed the design, queries and interfaces and developed an action plan that was subsequently implemented. John has excellent technical knowledge and expertise and works at keeping up to date. He worked well in my team with other DBA's and developers and users. His work was of high quality. He always contributed in a positive way, yet was always prepared to listen to others. Added to this John has a great sense of humour. A valuable team member and a great guy to work with.” Andy Lloyd (IT Manager Wyeth) Hired John as IT Consultant in 2005 John.m.lilley@btinternet.com Page 5 John Lilley 07930 342935
