Everything around us is matter – the soil,
water, and air.
Matter has different properties that make
them different from one another. Some types of
matter have properties that make them good
materials for producing useful products. Other
types have properties that make them harmful.
Sometimes, matter also undergoes changes
that affect their properties.

QUARTER CHAPTER 1 : HOW ARE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS USE TO MINIMIZE
WASTE?

EXPLORE We use different materials for cleaning, cooking,
eating, and repairing. The usefulness of a certain material
depends on its properties. These are materials that are
durable and therefore can be reused many times. Though
there are some that are not meant to be reused. Creative
and inventive people still find other ways to use them.
There are also materials that are made for certain
purposes only and can be harmful when not used or
disposed properly.
In order to minimize waste in our own household, we
have to know which materials are still useful and which are
ones should already be disposed.

  • 10. Grade 5 1st QUARTER CHAPTER 1 : HOW ARE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS USE TO MINIMIZE WASTE? Property of San Carlos City Division. All rights reserved. EXPLORE We use different materials for cleaning, cooking, eating, and repairing. The usefulness of a certain material depends on its properties. These are materials that are durable and therefore can be reused many times. Though there are some that are not meant to be reused. Creative and inventive people still find other ways to use them. There are also materials that are made for certain purposes only and can be harmful when not used or disposed properly. In order to minimize waste in our own household, we have to know which materials are still useful and which are ones should already be disposed.

Editor's Notes

  1. NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  2. Key Notes: Fill in the K-W-H-L Chart below to assess your prior knowledge and understanding of the topic, properties of matter. K stands for “Know”; W - “ Want to know”; H - “How can I find out; and L for “Learned concepts”. List down also the different skills that you expect to use for this lesson.
  3. Matter is everything around you. Atoms and compounds are all made of very small parts of matter. Those atoms go on to build the things you see and touch every day. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space (it has volume). NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  4. Earth has everything we need to survive. There are also things that can harm us. For example, it has all the food that we eat to get the nutrients and energy in order to live. However, food once rotten can harm and destroy us. This is why it is important to know how to distinguish useful from harmful materials. It can save us from danger and distress. Ask: How can you identify if a certain material is useful or harmful? Answer: We can identify that a certain material is useful or harmful by looking at the its properties. NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  5. Key Notes: If possible let all learners show and tell what they have got. Possible Answers: Things inside the bag: notebook, ballpen, eraser. Things inside the classroom: chalk, plastic cover, nail Things inside the bag - The notebook is made of plastic and paper. The ballpen is made of plastic and metal. The eraser is made of plastic Things inside the classroom – The chalk is made of powder. The plastic cover is made of plastic. The nail is made of iron or metal. 3. The materials are safe if use properly. But it can be harmful if we will not use it the way it will serve its purpose why it is made.
  6. Key notes: Make sure that all learners are ready to listen and watch the video to get the maximum result. Ask them to write all the important things in their notebook. Afterwards, check their comprehension regarding the video by asking questions. Sample Questions: What is the video all about? Have you seen materials like those before? Why do we need to know which materials are useful and harmful?
  7. Key note: Before throwing away any material, you must first check if it can cause harm to living things and the environment. NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  8. Key note: Each group will assign a leader that will present their group answer in the class. Clarify misconceptions based on learner’s result. Ask: 1. What common materials are the listed products on the table? Answer: chalk, floor wax, notebook, ballpen, paper 2. How did you classify the materials? Answer: We classify them according to their usefulness and harmfulness. 3. Why do we need to know which materials are useful and harmful? Answer: We need to know what materials are useful and harmful for us to avoid accident or harm.
  9. Key Notes: Materials are considered useful when it serves a purpose. These materials may have properties such as durability, resistance to water, heat, or acid, flexibility, elasticity and hardness. Some useful materials can also be reused, take for example, a container for any solid or liquid material. When it is already empty, it can still be used for other purposes – as a flower vase, a coin bank, or a house décor. Whether a bottle is made of plastic glass, it has a property that makes it reusable. NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  10. Key note: Let the learners identify each materials. Ask: How do we use these materials? Answer: We use those materials in our daily lives. Are those materials important to us? Why? Answer: Yes, those materials are important to us. Because it makes our life comfortable.
  11. Key note: This activity can be done in groups or individual. Let the learners write as many household materials they know. Sample answer: Wood – table, chair, chopping board, etc.
  12. Key notes: Make sure that all learner are ready to listen and watch the video to get the maximum result. Ask them to write all the important things they will see in their notebook. Afterwards, check their comprehension regarding the video by asking questions. Sample Questions: 1. What is the video all about? Answer: The video is all about the properties of matter. 2. Have you seen materials like those before? Answer: Yes, I have seen materials like those before. Show real objects in the class in discussing the idea in order for the learners to fully understand the lesson. Also, ask the learners to give examples for each material properties aside from what the teacher showed in the class. PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS A. Hardness – the ability of a material to resist pressure. They are used to make things that need to be sturdy like construction materials. Example: metals, woods, and stones B. Malleability – the ability of a material to be hammered into thin sheets. Example: gold, silver, and copper C. Ductility – the ability of a material to be drawn into thin wires. They are used in electrical wiring at home and filament of bulbs. Example: iron, brass, and tungsten D. Porosity – the ability of a material to absorb water to pass through it. Example: sponge, clothes, mop rags, tissue E. Flexibility – the ability of a material to be bent or rolled without breaking easily. Example: wires, rubber, and some plastics F. Thermal Conductivity – the ability of a material to transfer thermal energy from one area to another. These are heat conductors or heat absorbers Example: metal
  13. Key Notes: This can be done orally. Encourage learners to talk freely in answering each question. Sample Answers: Wood is use to make tables and chairs because of its hardness. Plastic is use to make containers and bags because of its flexibility. Glass is use to make windows, bulbs, and bottles because of its luster effect. Metal is use to make pans and pots because of its hardness. Ceramic is use to make mugs, vases, and cups because of its brittleness.
  14. Key note: Learners will write their observation in their notebook. Materials have properties that make them useful for certain jobs. Such properties include the quality of being shiny, waterproof, hard, absorbent, strong, transparent, flexible, magnetic, able to conduct electricity, and many more.
  15. Key note: Learners will write their observation in their notebook. Possible Answer: We were able to came up with 6 groups and these are metal, plastic, cloth, glass, rubber and wood. The most common materials among the products are metal, plastic, and glass. Conclusion: Properties of matter is being used in determining the use of material in order to maximize its purpose. NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  16. Key notes: This can be done orally or written test. Choices for this test can be posted on the board using metacards. Key Answer: Malleability Hardness Porosity Brittleness Hardness NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
  17. Key notes: This will be the homework. Explain further to the learners what to do. Teacher can give example of the materials that has the same symbol. NOTE: Click the home button to go back to menu.
