Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions The Lord’s Prayer 4th Petition: Give us this day our daily bread. Memorization Verses: Give us this day our daily bread. What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving. What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout children, devout workers, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, selfcontrol, good reputation, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.

Tree of Blessings Make a tree. For each leaf, write/draw one of your needs and blessings that God provides.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Give us this day our daily bread. “1/4  Here, now, we consider the poor breadbasket, the necessaries of our body and of the temporal life. It is a brief and simple word, but it has a very wide scope. For when you mention and pray for daily bread, you pray for everything that is necessary in order to have and enjoy daily bread and, on the other hand, against everything which interferes with it. Therefore you must open wide and extend your thoughts not only to the oven or the flour-bin but to the distant field and the entire land, which bears and brings to us daily bread and every sort of sustenance. For if God did not cause it to grow, and bless and preserve it in the field, we could never take bread from the oven or have any to set upon the table.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Give us this day our daily bread..” 2/4  To comprise it briefly, this petition includes everything that belongs to our entire life in the world, because on that account alone do we need daily bread. Now for our life it is not only necessary that our body have food and covering and other necessaries, but also that we spend our days in peace and quiet among the people with whom we live and have intercourse in daily business and conversation and all sorts of doings, in short, whatever pertains both to the domestic and to the neighborly or civil relation and government. For where these two things are hindered [intercepted and disturbed] that they do not prosper as they ought, the necessaries of life also are impeded, so that ultimately life cannot be maintained. And there is, indeed, the greatest need to pray for temporal authority and government, as that by which most of all God preserves to us our daily bread and all the comforts of this life. For though we have received of God all good things in abundance we are not able to retain any of them or use them in security and happiness, if He did not give us a permanent and peaceful government. For where there are dissension, strife, and war, there the daily bread is already taken away, or at least checked. Therefore it would be very proper to place in the coat-of-arms of every pious prince a loaf of bread instead of a lion, or a wreath of rue, or to stamp it upon the coin, to remind both them and their subjects that by their office we have protection and peace, and that without them we could not eat and retain our daily bread. Therefore they are also worthy of all honor, that we give to them for their office what we ought and can, as to those through whom we enjoy in peace and quietness what we have, because otherwise we would not keep a farthing; and that, in addition, we also pray for them that through them God may bestow on us the more blessing and good.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Give us this day our daily bread..” 3/4 Let this be a very brief explanation and sketch, showing how far this petition extends through all conditions on earth. Of this any one might indeed make a long prayer, and with many words enumerate all the things that are included therein, as that we pray: God to give us food and drink, clothing, house, and home, and health of body; also that He cause the grain and fruits of the field to grow and mature well; furthermore, that He help us at home towards good housekeeping, that He give and preserve to us a godly wife, children, and servants, that He cause our work, trade, or whatever we are engaged in to prosper and succeed, favor us with faithful neighbors and good friends, etc. Likewise, that He give to emperors, kings, and all estates, and especially to the rulers of our country and to all counselors, magistrates, and officers, wisdom, strength, and success that they may govern well and vanquish the Turks and all enemies; to subjects and the common people, obedience, peace, and harmony in their life with one another, and on the other hand, that He would preserve us from all sorts of calamity to body and livelihood, as lightning, hail, fire, flood, poison, pestilence, cattle-plague, war and bloodshed, famine, destructive beasts, wicked men, etc. All this it is well to impress upon the simple, namely, that these things come from God, and must be prayed for by us.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Give us this day our daily bread.” 4/4 But this petition is especially directed also against our chief enemy, the devil. For all his thought and desire is to deprive us of all that we have from God, or to hinder it; and he is not satisfied to obstruct and destroy spiritual government in leading souls astray by his lies and bringing them under his power, but he also prevents and hinders the stability of all government and honorable, peaceable relations on earth. There he causes so much contention, murder, sedition, and war also lightning and hail to destroy grain and cattle, to poison the air, etc. In short, he is sorry that any one has a morsel of bread from God and eats it in peace; and if it were in his power, and our prayer (next to God) did not prevent him, we would not keep a straw in the field, a farthing in the house, yea, not even our life for an hour, especially those who have the Word of God and would like to be Christians. Behold, thus God wishes to indicate to us how He cares for us in all our need, and faithfully provides also for our temporal support. and although He abundantly grants and preserves these things even to the wicked and knaves, yet He wishes that we pray for them, in order that we may recognize that we receive them from His hand, and may feel His paternal goodness toward us therein. For when He withdraws His hand, nothing can prosper nor be maintained in the end, as, indeed, we daily see and experience. How much trouble there is now in the world only on account of bad coin, yea, on account of daily oppression and raising of prices in common trade, bargaining and labor on the part of those who wantonly oppress the poor and deprive them of their daily bread! This we must suffer indeed; but let them take care that they do not lose the common intercession, and beware lest this petition in the Lord's Prayer be against them.
Sing it! Prayer Prep: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread “Give us this day our daily bread…” This is petition and supplication. It is asking God to provide for your needs. He wants you to ask Him. You are declaring your dependence on Him. Read Matthew. 7:7-11. Read Matthew 6:25-34. For each of the following verses, list the criteria for receiving from God. John 15:7 1 John 3:21-24 What do you need today? Don’t worry about what you may need tomorrow. He will supply what you need one day at a time; give us this day. Tell God what you need today and pay attention to how He supplies it. Sometimes you may be deeply troubled over something. So was Jesus. Read Hebrews 5:7. Describe Jesus’ petitions. Why was He heard? Sometimes you need to weep with God. But then turn over to God your trouble with the same attitude Jesus had.
1 Let all mortal flesh keep silenceAnd with fear and trembling stand;Ponder nothing earthly minded,For with blessing in His handChrist our God to earth descendingDomes our homage to demand. 2 King of kings yet born of Mary,As of old on earth He stood,Lord of lords, in human vesture,In the body and the blood,He will give to all the faithfulHis own self for heav'nly food. LSB 621 1 Corinthians 11:23-24; For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; 24and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

A prayer journal is page/notebook that contains your: prayer requests Bible study notes verses that apply to a situation you are going through daily confessions goals revelations Reflection ideas….. (tell Jesus what you’ve found /thought about this week): As you meditate on these verses, what jumps out at you? How are the verses you read related? Do you see a consistent theme in the verses you read? Why do you think those specific words were chosen? What is God teaching you through these verses? What are you learning about God's character and nature? What are you learning about who you are in Christ? What are you learning about what God's plan for you?
We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before You, we kneel and adore You; We bless Your holy name, glad praises we sing LSB 785 Ps 95:2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; Let us make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
PRAYERLord Christ, we pray Your mercy on our table spread. What Your gentle hands have given, let it be blessed by You. Whatever we possess has come from Your lavish heart and gentle hand. All that’s good is Yours, for You are good. You who eat, give thanks for it to Christ. Let the words you utter be only peace. For Christ loved peace: it was He who said, Peace I give unto you, My peace I leave with you. Grant that our own hand may be generous, breaking the bread for all poor men, sharing the food. Christ shall receive the bread you gave His poor, and shall not tarry to give You reward. Amen. LSB 642 (The Church’s One Foundation/The Bridegroom Soon Will Call Us) 1 O Living Bread from heaven, How well You feed Your guest! The gifts that You have given Have filled my heart with rest. Oh, wondrous food of blessing, Oh, cup that heals our woes! My heart, this gift possessing, With praises overflows. 2 My Lord, You here have led me To this most holy place And with Yourself have fed me The treasures of Your grace; For You have freely given What earth could never buy, The bread of life from heaven, That now I shall not die. 3 You gave me all I wanted; This food can death destroy. And You have freely granted The cup of endless joy. My Lord, I do not merit The favor You have shown, And all my soul and spirit Bow down before Your throne. 4 Lord, grant me then, thus strengthened With heav'nly food, while here My course on earth is lengthened, To serve with holy fear. And when You call my spirit To leave this world below, I enter, through Your merit, Where joys unmingled flow.
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Discussion A third of primary school children think oranges grow in Britain. Almost half believe margarine comes from cows, and a quarter assume bread is made from potatoes or rice. The findings are revealed in a survey of children aged 8 to 11 by the polling organisation Mori. Half of the 356 children questioned did not know ham was produced from pigs. A third thought it came from chickens, 10 per cent assumed it was from cows, 5 per cent from sheep and 2 per cent deer. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/news/kids-dont-know-their-onions-about-food-674959.html

M support and needs of the body We pray to God for daily bread, which includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, because Christ wants us to  A. realize that our entire life and that of everyone else depends on God;  Ps. 145:15-16 The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food at the proper time. You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.  Matt. 5:45 He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  Acts 17:28 In Him we live and move and have our being.  James 4:15 You ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."  B. receive all our physical blessings with thanks giving;  Ps. 106:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.  Eph. 5:19-20 Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  1 Tim. 4:4-5 Everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanks giving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. • Pray: Give grace to all subjects to be obedient and to serve faithfully. Help all classes in city and country to be devout and to show love and consideration, one to another. Give favorable seasons and good harvests. I also commend to You house and land, wife and children. Help me to rule them well, and to support and train them in Christian order. Restrain and check the destroyer and all evil angels who would hinder and harm these providences of Yours. Amen. (Luther).
1 Sing to the Lord of harvest,Sing songs of love and praise; With joyful hearts and voicesYour alleluias raise.By Him the rolling seasonsIn fruitful order move;Sing to the Lord of harvestA joyous song of love. 2 God makes the clouds rain goodness,The deserts bloom and spring. The hills leap up in gladness,The valleys laugh and sing.God fills them with His fullness,All things with large increase; He crowns the year with goodness,With plenty and with peace. 3 Bring to this sacred altarThe gifts His goodness gave,The golden sheaves of harvest,The souls Christ died to save.Your hearts lay down before HimWhen at His feet you fall,And with your lives adore Him,Who gave His life for all. LSB 893 9Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it, Thou greatly enrichest it; The river of God is full of water: Thou providest them grain, when thou hast so prepared the earth. Ps 65:9-13
1 Now thank we all our GodWith heart and hands and voices,Who wondrous things has done,In whom His world rejoices;Who from our mother's armsHas blest us on our wayWith countless gifts of loveAnd still is ours today. 2 Oh, may this bounteous GodThrough all our life be near us,With ever joyful heartsAnd blessed peace to cheer usAnd keep us in His graceAnd guide us when perplexedAnd free us from all illsIn this world and the next! LSB 895
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Kingdom Analogy The duties of the King are to provide for the general needs of the people. As sovereign, the duty is not a mandate from a higher authority, but is consistent with being a strong and pragmatic leader. When Christ informs us of this petition, He is saying “I will make you strong for battle, I will make you humble for service, I will make you thankful for necessity.”
T Spiritual Blessings C. look to God for physical as well as spiritual blessings.  Ps. 91:15 He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.  Matt. 6:33 Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Luke 7:3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him to come and heal his servant.  Bible narratives: Jesus healed blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52). Jesus healed 10 lepers (Luke 17:11-19). • Pray: Give us also our daily bread. Guard us against greed and anxiety about the body, that we may confidently rely on You for all blessings. Amen. (Luther).
I come, O Savior, to Thy table,For weak and weary is my soul;Thou, Bread of Life, alone art ableTo satisfy and make me whole: Refrain Lord, may Thy body and Thy bloodBe for my soul the highest good! Thy body, giv’n for me, O Savior,Thy blood which Thou for me didst shed,These are my life and strength forever,By them my hungry soul is fed. LSB 618-619
Lord Jesus Christ, You have preparedThis feast for our salvation; It is Your body and Your blood,And at Your invitationAs weary souls, with sin oppressed,We come to You for needed rest,For comfort, and for pardon. LSB 622 Is 25:6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine--the best of meats and the finest of wines.
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Sovereign Fruit The Lord possesses all things, and does rightly with them whatever He desires. (Ne. 9:6) He desires that we: Do not worry about attaining more than we need to serve him through family, church, charity and vocation. Consider where all our blessings stem: Through Himself on the cross.
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Fruit of Church Daily bread should not be expected from the world, as they do not understand from whence their wealth comes. However, Christians do pray for government and society to remain conducive to daily bread. Rather, the Church as a community of saints (both visible and invisible) are tasked with providing basic needs to parishioners. This is not seasonal charity, nor wantonly bloated PR campaign, but a simple and daily truth acted out in love.
W: Earth fruitful How does God provide our daily bread? He makes the earth fruitful and blesses us with the ability to work for the things we need. Ps. 104:14 He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate-bringing forth food from the earth. 2 Thess. 3:10-12 Even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. What does God want us to do for those who are unable to work for daily food? God does not want us to be selfish but to share with those who are unable to work and to include them in our prayers for daily bread.   1 Tim. 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Heb. 13:16 Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 1 John 3:17-18 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. • Pray: O dear God, give us grace, that like Paul, David, and other saints we may highly prize our treasure, which is the same as theirs. Help us to cherish it above our possessions on earth and to thank You from the heart that You have honored us with it in preference to thousands of others. You could have let us go astray like those who know nothing of this treasure. You could have left us hardened like those who blaspheme and condemn our treasure. It is pure grace that You have placed us in Your green pastures and have so richly provided us with the bread of heaven and the water of life. For these we owe You more hearty thanks. Dear Lord Jesus Christ, prepare, strengthen, and establish us thoroughly in Your eternal kingdom with all the fullness of Your wisdom and knowledge. To You be praise and thanks in eternity. Amen. (Luther).
LSB 894 1 For the fruits of His creation, Thanks be to God. For His gifts to ev'ry nation, Thanks be to God. For the plowing, sowing, reaping, Silent growth while we are sleeping, Future needs in earth's safekeeping, Thanks be to God.  2 In the just reward of labor, God's will be done. In the help we give our neighbor, God's will is done. In our worldwide task of caring For the hungry and despairing, In the harvests we are sharing, God's will is done.  3 For the harvests of the Spirit, Thanks be to God. For the good we all inherit, Thanks be to God. For the wonders that astound us, For the truths that still confound us, Most of all, that love has found us, Thanks be to God.  Thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift. 2 Corinthians 9:15
Praise and thanksgiving, Father, we offerfor all things living, created good:harvest of sown fields, fruits of the orchard, hay from the mown fields, blossom and wood.Bless, Lord, the labor we bring to serve you, that with our neighbor we may be fed.Sowing or tilling, we would work with you, harvesting, milling for daily bread.Father, providing food for your children,by your wise guiding, teach us to shareone with another, so that, rejoicingwith us, all others may know your care. LSB 789 Psalm 107:31-3831Oh that men would praise Jehovah for his lovingkindness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men! 32Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people, And praise him in the seat of the elders. 33He turneth rivers into a wilderness, And watersprings into a thirsty ground; 34A fruitful land into a salt desert, For the wickedness of them that dwell therein. 35He turneth a wilderness into a pool of water, And a dry land into watersprings. 36And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, That they may prepare a city of habitation, 37And sow fields, and plant vineyards, And get them fruits of increase. 38He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; And he suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
Gracious God, You send great blessingsNew each morning all our days. For Your mercies never ending,For your love we offer praise. RefrainLord, we pray that we, Your peopleWho Your gifts unnumbered claim,Through the sharing of Your blessingsMay bring glory to Your name. LSB 782 Lamentations 3:22-23; It is of Jehovah's lovingkindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 1 Pt 4:0according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Fruit of Sacrament Just as with our daily needs of body, God also provides us a glimpse, through our bodies into our souls. We are not meant to be without food, just as we are not meant to be without the word. Consider Christ’s temptation in the wilderness. Fasting is a form of daily provision. Greater than our bodily needs, then, is provided in the Word of God in and by the water, bread, wine, and declared word of the Gospel. We are nourished: By remembering our baptism everyday. By gathering with believers to celebrate the body of Christ By declaring forgiveness and aiding in learning.
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Fruit of Trinity The Father sustains  Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. The Son invites All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. (John 6) The Spirit intercedes "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.
LP 4th Petition (Bread): Ending Quote “A more Christian attitude, which can be attained at any age, is that of leaving futurity in God’s hands.   We may as well, for God will certainly retain it whether we leave it to Him or not.  Never, in peace or war, commit your virtue or your happiness to the future.  Happy work is best done by the man who takes his long-term plans somewhat lightly and works from moment to moment “as to the the Lord.” It is only our daily bread that we are encouraged to ask for.  The present is the only time in which any duty can be done or any grace received.”

Thlive contentedly Why does Jesus have us say "this day" and "daily"?These words teach us not to be greedy or wasteful or to worry about the future but to live contentedly in the confidence that the Lord will give us what we need.  Prov. 30:8-9 Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, "Who is the Lord?" Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.  Matt. 6:34 Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  John 6:12 When they had all had enough to eat, He said to His disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."  1 Tim. 6:8 If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.  1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.  Bible narrative: The parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:15-21). • Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, give me Your Holy Spirit, that it may be my sole concern to be and remain Your dear child. Then let me diligently perform my duty as required by my calling and station, wherein You have placed me, and let me always look for my daily bread from Your fatherly goodness. May I in no way burden my heart with heathenish cares; for You are my dear Father, through Jesus Christ, my Savior. Amen. (Zorn).
Sing it! Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord, and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and dreams of all; unite them with the prayers we offer. Grace our table with Your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. Amen! Psalm 104:14-15 14 He makes grass grow for the cattle,    and plants for people to cultivate—    bringing forth food from the earth: 15 wine that gladdens human hearts,    oil to make their faces shine,    and bread that sustains their hearts.
Popcorn Prayer: Give Us this Day our daily bread… The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want… Praise God from whom all blessings flow…
Conclusion Give us this day our daily bread. We pray to God for daily bread, which includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, because Christ wants us to A.realize that our entire life and that of everyone else depends on God; B.receive all our physical blessings with thanks giving; look to God for physical as well as spiritual blessings. He makes the earth fruitful and blesses us with the ability to work for the things we need. God does not want us to be selfish but to share with those who are unable to work and to include them in our prayers for daily bread. These words teach us not to be greedy or wasteful or to worry about the future but to live contentedly in the confidence that the Lord will give us what we need.
The Lord’s Prayer: 5th Petition: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Next Time…(9/30)

Daily bread through God's care

  • 2. The lord is good to meAnd so I thank the lordFor giving me the things I needThe sun and rain and an appleseedYes, he's been good to meI owe the lord so muchFor everything I seeI'm certain if it weren't for himThere'd be no apples on this limbHe's been good to meOh, here am I 'neath the blue, blue sky a-doin' as I pleaseSingin' with my feathered friends, hummin' with the beesI wake up every day as happy as can beBecause I know that with his careMy apple trees, they will still be thereOh, the lord is good to me Amen Amen Amen AmenAmen Amen
  • 3. Tree of Blessings Make a tree. For each leaf, write/draw one of your needs and blessings that God provides.

For Christ loved peace: it was He who said, Peace I give unto you, My peace I leave with you. Grant that our own hand may be generous, breaking the bread for all poor men, sharing the food.

Almost half believe margarine comes from cows, and a quarter assume bread is made from potatoes or rice. The findings are revealed in a survey of children aged 8 to 11 by the polling organisation Mori. Half of the 356 children questioned did not know ham was produced from pigs. Amen. (Luther).
  • 27. LSB 618-619
  • 31. Amen. (Luther).

  • 39. Amen. (Zorn).
  • 41. Popcorn Prayer: Give Us this Day our daily bread… The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want… Praise God from whom all blessings flow…
  • 42. Conclusion Give us this day our daily bread.
