  2. 2. CERVICAL CANCER Cervical cancer forms in your cervix  A cervix is the lower part of the uterus The uterus is where the baby develops and forms in a women The uterus is a pear-shaped origin only found inside of a women
  3. 3. WHAT DOES CERVICAL CANCER AFFECT? Cervical cancer affects a woman’s cervix It can affect a woman’s reproductive organs (vagina, uterus) It can also move (metastasize) to other areas of the body by the lymphatic system
  4. 4. What are the survival rates? In 2012- 12,042 women in the U.S. diagnosed with cervical cancer 4,074 of them died The 5 year survival rate is 68%, when caught in an early stage increases to 91%

WHAT ARE CERVICAL CANCER SYMPTOMS? • Blood spots or light bleeding between or following periods • Menstrual bleeding that is longer and heavier than usual • Bleeding after sexual intercourse or a pelvic examination • Pain during sexual intercourse • Bleeding after menopause (period) • Increased vaginal discharge
  6. 6. What are some treatment options? Nonsurgical • External radiation • Internal radiation implants • Chemotherapy • Laser therapy  Cryosurgery Surgical  Conization  Hysterectomy  Pelvic exenteration
  7. 7. What can be done to lessen this type of cancer? • HPV vaccine if you’re under 26 years old (Gardasil) • Good hygiene • Practice no sex until marriage • Don’t have multiple sex partners • Don’t smoke • Eat lots of fruits and vegetables • Start getting PAP test
  8. 8. What goes on in the cell cycle? • When a few genes in a cell becomes damaged or mutated it can cause cancer • The cell may multiply at the wrong time, or in the wrong place
