Appearance of a disability, especially intellectual disability of a child <ul><li>exerts a strong negative influence on the functioning of the family , </li></ul><ul><li>doesn’t strengthen, on the contrary, impairs family relations, </li></ul><ul><li>causes emotional disorders, frustrations and </li></ul><ul><li>disturbs relationship between the parents of a child </li></ul><ul><li>If all these are not remedied the family stays in a state of a permanent crisis which may lead to an eventual breakdown of the family. </li></ul>&quot;The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe&quot; Arras 2009

Factors influencing the condition of the family after the child’s disability occurrence : <ul><li>“ Quality” of the family relations before the disability appears, especially “quality” of the relations between spouses (partners) (their mutual trust, intimacy, closeness, good communication) </li></ul><ul><li>A disabled child : type and severity of the disability, age which the disability appears in, progress or lack of progress in the development and rehabilitation of a child, </li></ul><ul><li>Financial and social status of the family </li></ul><ul><li>Parent’s education level and the ir previous contact with disability </li></ul><ul><li>Presence of other children in the family </li></ul><ul><li>Re sponse of the rest of the extended family, friends, neigbours and other people to the disability of a child </li></ul><ul><li>Direct, immediate support from the professionals and from the local community (early intervention) after the disability occurs. </li></ul>&quot;The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe&quot; Arras 2009

Early intervention means early, multi-disciplinary (medical, psychological and educational), integrated and specialized impact on children with anomalous development combined with the support for their families. <ul><li>Early intervention includes: </li></ul><ul><li>Early, multidisciplinary diagnosis and assessment of a child, whose psycho-motoric development is irregular in several spheres, since birth till 7 years of age </li></ul><ul><li>Early, multidisciplinary, continuous and complex therapy according to the individual needs of a child </li></ul><ul><li>Constant evaluation meant by monitoring development and progress of a child and modifying a therapy programme </li></ul><ul><li>Psychological support and raising of knowledge and competences of parents, concerning the specific needs of their disabled child. </li></ul>&quot;The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe&quot; Arras 2009

Support for the f amily with a disabled child includes : <ul><ul><li>Psychological support and if necessary psychotherapy and psychiatric intervention </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>raising of knowledge and competences of parents in different forms like briefing, teaching, workshops, seminars etc. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Toy and book library, rehabilitation equipment and aids rental, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Long and short term respite care, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Social help and aid , </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Informa tion, counselling, guidance service s </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Transport </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Mutual support groups for the families with the similar problems </li></ul></ul>&quot;The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe&quot; Arras 2009

Their p olicies and daily practice influence… ** where a person who depends on services lives, learns, works, and plays ** what activities fill the person’s da ily life ** who the person gets to know and where the person belongs ** the way the person and others understand who the person is

The forms of support for the families with a disabled member have to refer to all of the life’s spheres and have to enable the access to: <ul><li>health care, education, social benefits and housing </li></ul><ul><li>special aids and rehabilitation equipment </li></ul><ul><li>social rehabilita tion and daily activity for those who cannot work </li></ul><ul><li>vocational rehabilitation and training, employment and support in job placement </li></ul><ul><li>advocacy, personal assistance and legal protection </li></ul><ul><li>meaningfull and active leasure time activities </li></ul><ul><li>services in the community, participation in culture, sports and recreation </li></ul><ul><li>respite care </li></ul>&quot;The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe&quot; Arras 2009

The fundamental question for those concerned with high quality services for people with severe disabilities is … How can we use our resources to assist the people who rely on us to live better lives?

Family support – in the Centre consists of: <ul><li>Assessment of a child and p roviding parent s with comprehensive information about therapeutical and educational program of their child </li></ul><ul><li>Parent’s Club – support group for parents run by psychologists. </li></ul><ul><li>Consultations with specialists. </li></ul><ul><li>I nformation exchange between staff of the Center and parents on the d aily basis. </li></ul><ul><li>Medical c onsultations in the Center. </li></ul><ul><li>A ssistance for parents in accordance to help them with formal procedures connected with disability of their child. </li></ul><ul><li>Fitting up the rehabilitation equipment and special aids . </li></ul><ul><li>Organization of the leasure time activities. </li></ul><ul><li>Organization of the financial and in kind support (clothes, weelchairs, furnitures, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>Integration of the family environment – ceremonies and events inside and outside the Center. </li></ul><ul><li>Special transport provision </li></ul>&quot;The Family at the Heart of the Social Work in Europe&quot; Arras 2009
