Career Project I

   James Kotak
Who am I?
• I would say I am unique to other because I enjoy
helping people. I’ve found this out through
babysitting, tutoring, and overall making people
happy. I want to be a teacher because that not
only helps children grow, but also provides a
foundation for the future of America. If I could do
anything other than teaching it would be
environmental science so that I could help the
current state of the planet. I feel a great
satisfaction from having others improve upon
themselves which is why any of these careers
  would be suitable for me.
Building Blocks
• Sociability- sociability is not only meeting new people,
but also having the ability to join new clubs and organize
  other social events.
• Listening- the ability to listen is one that is not only vital
to the work place, but also to everyday life. This includes
taking notes, interpreting statements, and visualizing
  what one hears.
• Reasoning- reasoning is important because it helps to
understand certain relationships, movements, or other
patterns that humanity’s involved in. This also includes
  using logic to solve problems.
Building Blocks to Develop
• Leadership- leadership would be a good quality
to develop because it would be helpful to lead
  others.
• Negotiation- negotiation would be a good quality
to develop because instead of appeasing
people, what you want could be taken into
  account.
• Responsibility- responsibility would be a good
quality to develop because it will show how one
can be more organized and be perceived more
  positively.
Learning Styles
• I am a visual learner.
• This means that noise is my main
  distraction from completing a task.
• I also work best with in a physical aspect,
  like architecture or art.
Work Value: Independence
• I value being able to have a schedule that
  is flexible.
• I value being able to have rules that are
flexible or that I can change.
• I would want to do things on my own
  initiative.
Holland Code: Social, Artistic, Investigative

• Social- someone who likes to inform, train,
  enlighten, develop, or even cure.
• Artistic- someone who likes to work in a
  free environment that involves free-
  thinking abilities.
• Investigative- someone who’s interested in
  learning, observing, or solving problems.
Area, Ethnic, and Cultural Studies Teachers,
               Postsecondary
• Discuss the development of certain areas
and cultural groups and why these certain
  things happened.
• The amount of jobs in this field is
supposed to increase by 44 openings a
  year
• This relates to me because I am social,
and being a teacher means interacting
with other people all the time.
Architects, Except Landscape and Naval

• This branch of architecture mainly deals
with the construction of buildings such as
  skyscrapers or private places.
• There is an estimated 12,930 jobs to be
filled in New York by 2016
• This relates to me because I am artistic
  and architecture involves working with
  ideas, forms, patterns, and designs
Dietitians and Nutritionists
• Help coordinate peoples’ diets to prevent
disease and promote health. May conduct
  health research
• This career is in demand, so there will
approximately be 4,910 jobs to be filled by
  2016
• This relates to me because I am
investigative and social, which this career
calls for since it helps people and looks for
  solutions
Birkman Test: Usual Style
• People with yellow styles perform their job
responsibilities in a manner that is orderly and planned to
meet a known schedule. They prefer to work where
things get done with a minimum of interpretation and
unexpected change. People with a yellow style tend to
be orderly, cautious, structured, loyal, systematic,
solitary, methodical, and organized, and usually thrive in
  a research-oriented, predictable, established, controlled,
measurable, orderly environment. You will want to
choose a work environment or career path in which your
style is welcomed and produces results.
Birkman Test: Interest Color
• People with blue Interests like job
  responsibilities and occupations that
  involve creative, humanistic, thoughtful,
and quiet types of activities. Blue Interests
  include abstracting, theorizing, designing,
  writing, reflecting, and originating, which
often lead to work in editing, teaching,
  composing, inventing, mediating, clergy,
  and writing.
Human Resources Manager
• Help to provide social connections between employees,
and also help by contacting insurance providers.
Approve of relationships between managers and
employees, and make sure other matches are
appropriate. Also must dictate common etiquette in the
  workplace.
• Must have at least a bachelor’s degree, though a
  master’s looks much better.
• This relates to me because it involves humanistic values,
and includes a responsible deadline which entails both
my blue interest color and my yellow style, respectively.
City Planner
• City planners are in charge of the architectural design of
cities, while they must also measure street widths and
such. One of the main aspects, however, is the street
furniture, which is lampposts, bus stops, and newspaper
stands. Mostly, however, they renovate and beautify
  cities.
• Recommended degrees include Architectural History,
Urban Planning, Urban Studies, and Architecture.
• This would connect to my Birkman test results because it
includes designing and abstracting, which relates to my
blue interest color. I would also be a good city planner
because I am organized and systematic, which are crucial
  to the city planner process,
Child Care Worker
• Many child care workers take the role of a parent to a child, while
their actually parents are working, away, or unavailable. Despite a
rewarding experience, many also associate this career with long
hours, some even reaching up to 24 hours a day. Many take on the
roles of a parent by cooking, cleaning, and organizing a child’s life.
Many are employed by government organizations.
• As with many careers, a bachelor’s degree is required, but a master’s
degree is recommended. Many psychological majors are
recommended, as well as child development.
• This relates to my blue interest color because it involves helping
others and learning from new experiences. It relates to my yellow
style because a great deal of organization is required to keep up with
deadlines and assignments, as well as organizing the child’s
    schedule.
One Year
• At least a 3.5 GPA
• Joined Political Awareness Club, Student
  Council, and BSA
• Accepted the role of Eagle Scout
• Part-time job
• Varsity Badminton
Five Years
• I’ll be a junior in college
• Part-time job to pay for books
• Living in a dorm, or a suite apartment
• I’ll travel by a car that requires little gas
• Helping my community by volunteering and
  voting
• Internship
• Growing professional network (professors,
  bosses, internships)
10 Years
• More educated by graduate school and
  college
• Kindergarten teacher, about $55,000
  (entry)
• Car that requires low gas
• Single, no children
• Travelling in my spare time
• Stronger professional network
Favorite Career
• The career that I found most interesting
was the city planner. This career not only
  requires investigative thinking, but also
  harsh organization skills. Within this
career, I will be able to express my
creativity in the outcome of buildings and
other structures. I also enjoy the idea of
independence in my thoughts, while still
  interacting with others and receiving
  recognition for my work.
