Discussion Questions For The Book Thief
The Book Thief Discussion Questions
Kelsey Marlett
Prologue/Part One
1. Death saw life in terms of color because it helped him disconnect from the emotional aspects of
his job. He referred to color in terms of tastes because it makes for a more vivid, rich image. Blue
would taste ice cold. Red would be hot or spicy. Yellow would be tart. Purple would be sweet. Green
would be bitter.
3. Yes, I think they were right in their passive acceptance to the Nazi regime. Though I understand
that it may have been more morally right to stand up against the Nazis, the important thing to realize
is that if they had done so, they would have been placing their families in danger, and their families
are their first priority.
6. This metaphor is saying...show more content...
Franz was cruel, harshly disciplined, and unaccepting of people who were different or deemed
"impure." He fully supported Hitler and his morals.
Part Six/Seven
1. I think that Death's chatty tones added to the serious themes. Death had a witty and honest tone
and though some parts seemed humorous, there always seemed to be several darker layers to the
humor. There were many moments in the novel where his narrations would be quite chilling. An
example of such a moment can be found on page 349, Death says, "Summer came. For the book
thief, everything was going nicely. For me, the sky was the color of Jews." This is a striking and
scary comment because it reminds us that countless Jews are dying and Liesel is just living her
everyday life without giving much thought to it.
2. Rosa appears that way because it's not in her nature to openly express her love and her emotions.
She shows it in her actions – for instance, the way that she always provides for her family and came
to school to tell Liesel that Max woke up.
3. The Book Thief offers a unique characterization of Death by making him appear as someone
who does not enjoy his job. He describes himself as having a tough boss at his shoulder, hissing
"Get it done, get it done." He is constantly trying to avoid becoming emotionally attached to any of
the people he has to work with and around, particularly the survivors, and has to distract himself by

Preparation: What are two different ways that words have power? Find a textual example for each.
Zusak has many references to words bringing people together or tearing them apart throughout the
book, which suggests that words are a powerful medium in which people connect to each other. An
example of this is the quote "I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made
them right" (Zusak 528). Referring to what I said in the beginning, Liesel talks about how she has
hated the words that other people have used to tear the relationship between them, and she has loved
the words that have brought her closer to characters such as Hans or Max. Additionally, Liesel talks
about hoping she has made them right, which shows that Liesel knows the importance of words and
reflects upon her time using them in hope that she has brought people

Essay On The Book Thief
The title of The Book Thief fits the book very well. First of all, it sounds intellectual, which lets
people know the type of reading they are about to be doing when they sit down with this book. If
someone was looking for a light, fun read, this tells them not to pick this book up. Also, the
phrase "the book thief", comes back many times within the novel, whether when Death is referring
to Liesel, or when Liesel titles her autobiography after her unknown nickname. Character If I were
to choose a character to be my best friend, I would choose Rudy Steiner. First, he clearly doesn't
care what other people may think of him, as demonstrated in the Jesse Owens incident. He knew he
would be made fun of, but he wanted to honor Jesse Owens, so he did it. His...show more content...
Trust me though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in
her hands like clouds, and she would ring them out like the rain." This quote, appearing when
Liesel is struggling with reading, encompasses the important symbol of Liesel and her
relationship with books. This is ultimately summed up in Max's book that he wrote for Liesel,
The Word Shaker. In the story, words are planted by Hitler, until they are a massive forest of
destructive ideas. Liesel, however, plants her own tree, with a seed from a tear she cried to save
Max. She climbs the tree and stays there. Hitler, and many others try to cut down the tree, but they
can't. One day another man comes, not to cut down the tree, but to climb it. The man who climbs
the tree is Max, and they both leave the tree together. The tree finally falls, taking down some bad
trees with it. Max's story was a perfect metaphor, and brought some clarity to a few topics. First it
showed that, while one person can't destroy all Nazi–ism, they can still make a difference. It also
brings light to the dynamic of Liesel's relationship with books. Books and words are her safe

Book Thief Discussion Questions 1. Having Death serve as the narrator was an interesting
approach for the author. I thought that Death always being in the right place at the right time was
cool but at the same time erie. To me, Death was the soul collector whose purpose was to show the
reader the depth of this story and not to bore them with only one view of what was going on during
the story. 2. Liesel: Rosa and Hans Hubermann: Max Vandenburg: Rudy Steiner: Mrs. Hermann: в

The ugly thing about Liesel was that she was a thief, however it made her who she was so it was
also a beautiful thing. At one point in the story, Liesel's worst, Liesel declared that she hated words
and especially Hitler. This made me sad to think that her...show more content...
It was a thank you gift for her hospitality. The power of words is that it can bring people young or
old together. The other main theme of The Book Thief was the kindness and cruelty of humans.
The cruelty was shown by Hitler's discrimination of Jews and the kindness was shown by Hans
giving bread to the Jews. According to the cruelty of Hitler, you are not supposed to sympathise
with the Jews. Han's act of kindness was against the law but it shows the reader what kind of a
person he really is. 10. When I read the ending I was very happy when Max was reunited with
Liesel. I was also surprised when Liesel showed Mrs. Hermann the finished book. I thought that I
wasn't going to hear of her again. The thing that struck me the most was when Death said "I am
haunted by humans." It's usually the other way around, where humans will do anything to avoid
death. I was surprised by what Death said more than anything else. I was expecting something
along the lines of Liesel got a job and that was the end of her book thieving career. I was expecting
the last line to be said by Death, but not in the way it said it. Death is a haunting subject and it
could not have been said in a more eerie

THE BOOK THIEF: DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Part 1
1. Because life can be vibrant and beautiful like color and colors are related to taste like green apples
are sour and red apples are sweet.
1a. red: sweet, blue: berries, green: sour, yellow: cheese, purple: grape.
2. I think they wanted Liesel to call them "mama" and "papa" to make her feel comfortable and like
they are a family.
3. I think they were justified because any objection could lead to punishment.
3a. The secret resistance, like helping max, even if it is kept secret it still shows passive resistence.
4. I think it was justified because she was clearly being teased to get a rise out of her and thats
exactly what happened.
4a. I think Liesel's hostility came not from the fact that Ludwig was unquestionably teasing her but
from the fact that he was teasing her about her inability to read....show more content...
No, because she was just innocently trying to make contact with her mother.
1a. I think she was justified because Liesel was using the families money to make contact with the
woman that left her behind.
2. I think that their ideals are so drastically different that it would be difficult for both of them to see
eye to eye.
2a. Because Hans' son was so tied up in his support for Hitler that he couldn't see his father's side of
things.
3. Hans' compassion sets a strong example for Liesel who is soothed by his presence. He gives bread
to a starving prisoner and protects Max.
4. That Liesel was allowed to take any books she wanted from the library.
4a. Because Ilse lost her only son. I believe that she is intrigued by Liesel and she is a distraction
from that sadness.
5. I dont think it was justified but not a huge deal since they were only apples.
6. Max is like a son to Hans. They love eachother like family.

Death In The Book Thief Essay
Part One: Compare and contrast this persona of Death with the familiar personification of the Grim
Reaper. How is Death from The Book Thief like the Grim Reaper, and how is he significantly
different?
People typically think of the Grim Reaper as evil and cruel, like he enjoys killing people. Death in
The Book Thief, however, seems to dislike what he has to do. He says many times in the epilogue
that he requires distractions to take his mind off his work, to help him deal with it. Death also feels
remorse for what he has to do, and he wishes he could comfort the people who are left. In this
quote on page 13, Death says, "Please, again. I ask you to believe me. I wanted to stop. To crouch
down. I wanted to say: "I'm sorry, child." But that...show more content...
Ilsa is isolated because she is set apart from the rest of Molching. She is rich and lives on a hill,
while most everyone else is poor and lives below her.
Part Four: What does this quotation mean? Why is it significant? How does it connect to an
emerging theme of the novel? What is the impact of this passage on the reader?
"I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are
not. They're running at me," Death says. This quotation means that a lot of young men (I'm
assuming soldiers) fight and go into battle thinking that they're going to fight with other soldiers and
survive, but they're basically running to their deaths. This is significant because it helps to tell more
of Hans Hubermann's backstory and what happened to him pre–Liesel. It also reveals a little bit what
fighting in World War II was like. This quote connects to the emerging themes of death and war
because it is about mortality and fighting other people in a war. This passage impacts me by making
me think about death and how many soldiers die while fighting (which is something that I don't
think about often).
Part Five: What does Viktor Chemmel see as a basic German right? Why is this such an important
quotation?
Viktor Chemmel sees wanting more as a basic German right. He also thinks that taking "what is
rightfully ours" is a right. He says, "No crime in wanting a little more... Wanting more is our

Thievery Quotes In The Book Thief
Imagine you are a poorly fed citizen, who is living in Germany, during the World War II, what would
you be doing, probably stealing something to fill up your tummy right? It is true that at the
economically unstable period mentioned in the book, thievery is understandable, anything could be
stolen and anyone could be a thief. However, for those who have read and understand the book
thoroughly would acknowledge the importance of Liesel's' thievery characteristic.Markus Zusak, in
The Book Thief characterizes Liesel as a thief to compare her theft with mutiny against Nazi
Germany, other rebellious German people and the development of her personal identity.
First, Zusak describes Liesel as a curious girl to create a metaphor for those who question...show

Zusak as the author, demonstrates Liesel as a thief to compare her with other rebellious Germans.
Throwback to the book Arrival On Himmel Street, death has written "Her knees entered the ground.
Her moment had arrived. Still in disbelief, she started to dig. He couldn't be dead. He couldn't be
dead. He couldn't–" (23), these words indicate the similarities between Liesel and many other
Germans during the period. As we all have known, during World War II, many German families
has to suffer from separation. Childrens are separated from their parents, siblings are supported
by each others. Just like Liesel, many in the time were departed from their parents on their way to
their foster parents. Unfortunately for some of them, their siblings, who share the same journey
with them cannot make it to the destination. Not only Liesel shares faiths with the rebellious
German who are affected by the World War II, she is also experiencing the same feeling that they
are sensing. They are all angry, they are in disbelief, that their loved ones have left them behind in
the lonely world. Correspondingly, in the book The Woman With The Iron Fist, Issa has spoken
"This is what I have to put up with, these rich bastards, these lazy swine..."(43). These words have
spoken for the majority of Germans at the time. Through the words, the abusive tone of the
character Issa, we can clearly see the spark of rebellious. Although these words were not directly
from Liesel, we all know that "Who

Write An Essay On The Book Thief
In the fall of 2009 a series of break ins in Rye, New York had residents in this sleepy little town in
Westchester NY living in fear. Thieves were breaking into cars, stealing the garage door remotes,
and gaining access to homes while residents were away at work. Car doors were left unlocked, so
thieves just simply opened them up, stole the clicker, and waited patiently for the homeowners to
leave the following morning; unaware that they were about to be robbed.
One of the robberies in particular was frightful as the one homeowner, a woman, was in the shower
and unaware a thief was in her house. As she walked out of her bathroom, in nothing but her towel,
she saw out of the corner of her eye the thief calmly walking down the stairs and out...show more

Don't leave your door remote out in the open. As illustrated in the true story above, a thief can
break into your car and steal your remote control. Now they have access to your home. When you
get out of your garage take the remote control with you. At the very least, hide it in a more
conspicuous place than the visor. This is especially important in big suburbs or cities, Boston or
Las Vegas garage doors are particularly vulnerable ascrime is typically higher. Though, as in the
story illustrated above, even sleepy little towns are not immune.
3. Get a keychain remote. Better than hiding your remote control, get one that is always with you.
Most opener manufacturers sell keychain remotes that you can always take with you. For a less then
$20 you can be sure you are not leaving yourself open and vulnerable to theft.
4. Use rolling code technology. Most older openers have security flaws in that anyone with a
transceiver and some know how can park near your home and wait for you to use your remote
control. When you do, they pick up the transmission and copy your code. Now they don't need to
steal your remote, they just made one of their own. Rolling code technology randomly selects a new
code for your opener, that only it and the remote have. It is impossible for a thief to copy

Describe at least ONE character or individual you enjoyed reading about in the text(s).Explain
why the character(s) or individual(s) helped you understand an idea in the text(s). History and
especially World War Two is a testament to the duality of human nature. Jeffery Kluger in an
article for Time Magazine reflects on this aspect of human nature. "The madness {lies} in the fact
that the savage and the splendid can exist in one creature, one person and often in one instant." I
enjoyed reading about Liesel Meminger in the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Liesel is

things Liesel Meminger had ever seen" Both Liesel and Isla counter loss and hatred with the
power of words through her actions related to books and reading. Liesel is most certainly a moral
compass, helping the reader that we can counter loss and hatred with the power of words and acts
of compassion. The reader further engages with her rite of passage and her witness of extreme
ugliness and the beauties of human nature. Liesel in The Book Thief is a character I enjoyed
reading about. She allows the reader an intimate view of one of the most shameful periods in human
history yet in doing so she reminds us of some of the most compassionate acts in human history.
Markus Zusak, like his character Liesel, uses powerful words to manipulate and engage the reader
so that we never forget the duality of human nature and the need for compassion in the face of

In the first chapter, I discovered who the narrator was on page 21. It specifically was revealed
when the narrator is talking about the dead brother of Liesel Meminger saying, "It was exactly
when I knelt down and extracted his soul, holding it limply in my swollen arms" (21). revealing the
narrator's identity as Death.
The narrator's diction on the page can be described as vain due to the fact he doesn't need an
introduction when the narrator says it is "not really necessary" (4). The narrator's diction reveals that
he has a methodical, stone cold personality that puts the narrator in a more superior position then the

Also, the race is revelatory to the characters because Rudy wants to show his affection and kiss
Liesel. Liesel thinks her and Rudy are only friends while Rudy will be devoted to attract her in for a
kiss.
As a parent explaining Rudy's actions, I would tell him that your admiration for one athlete can be
extremely exuberant but painting yourself his skin color in this time where prejudice of different
people was very high, it clearly isn't the smartest move. The itch in my heart is that it is morally
wrong to paint yourself black and if you go that extreme with your admiration, Rudy can honestly be
taken and have a higher chance to be killed by Nazi Germany.
Hans and Liesel are considered to be alike because they are both passionate and kind individuals and
are non supporters of the Nazi party. Both were against the Nazi Party but Liesel couldn't go under
the radar like Hans could. Another difference between the two is that Hans had more integrity and
honor buy purchasing his step–daughter a book while Liesel stole books.
Liesel most definitely could have trusted Rudy with the secret of having Max hidden in her
basement. Rudy was clearly Liesel's best friend and partner in crime when Liesel was doing her
acts of thievery stealing the books from the mayor's wife bookself. The devotion to Liesel Rudy
also had was strong and I believe Liesel could have trusted Rudy.
Max is also a book thief and that makes more than one book thief. There is more than

Katy Flanagan World Lit. Honors The Book Thief Questions 1.Based on the title of the novel The
Book Thief I expected the book to be about a person who became involved in stealing books. I
imagined it to be about some kind of challenging time where it was not good to have books
causing someone to need to steal the books. 2. The narrator of the novel is death. He is sarcastic
and gives the book some comic relief when it is an intense part of the novel. Liesel Meminger is
the main character. She is a little girl who at first does not like her foster parents but eventually
warms up to them and loves them. Hans Hubberman is the father of Liesel. He is compassionate
and helps Liesel with her learning. Rosa Hubberman is the new mother of Liesel. She is strict
with her and seems very tough. Rudy Steiner is Liesel's best friend. He wants to be a professional
runner and has a huge crush on Liesel. Liesel has a hard time adjusting to her surroundings when
she moves in with the Hubberman's. She is defensive with them at first but then begins to earn
their trust and connects with them in a great way. She realizes that books help her not only learn to

The Book Thief The book I will be discussing is The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. This historical
fiction novel's central question is about how humans can do both the most beautiful and the most
appalling things. Therefore, this central question is, what are humans capable of? How are they
capable of such great things, as well, as such horrible things? In this essay, I argue that The Book
Thief has more than one important theme and all of them helped to advance the plot and influence
the story. The Book Thief is the story, Narrated by Death, of Liesel Meminger, a nine–year–old
German girl who is surrendered by her mom to live with...show more content...
The small demonstrations of kindness we see when Ilsa Hermann welcomes Liesel into her
library, and Rudy gives the teddy bear to the dying pilot. Then, we see comparative
demonstrations of creulty, for example, Viktor Chemmel's and Franz Deutcher's treatment of
Rudy. We also see significantly more extreme examples of each. The Hubermanns demonstrate an
extraordinary example of kindess by looking after Max. They keep him alive at extraordinary
danger to themselves and treat him with the most extreme sweetness and openess. Not only that,
they care for him physically by giving nourishment and care as well as inwardly, making him feel
like a part of their family. Liesel specifically is caring to Max, and the two create a strong bond.
Given the political setting of the time, with disdain and savagery against Jews being common, Max
obviously considers Liesel's kindess to be remarkable. In the mean time, the inhumane
imprisonments for Jews sit inconspicuously out of sight of the book as the most compelling
illustration of

Review Of 'The Book Thief' Essays
Review of: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
It seems sometimes like the market for young adult literature is written down to the readers,
almost in a condescending manner. That is why a book like The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is
so refreshing in this sea of cookie cutter romances and fantasies. While classified as a young adult
novel, it deals with very serious themes. The book's cover comes printed with this label: "It is
1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will
become busier still." It is a dark allusion to what is to come. But Zusak makes this story more
accessible to the audience he is writing to and does this by creating identifiable characters, by

Hans is a passionate, caring man who earns his living as a house painter by day and an accordion
player by night. Liesel believes his eyes show kindness, and is closer to him from the beginning
than to her foster mother. He is one of a few in their village who is not a registered member of the
Nazi party, which comes to have serious repercussions on the family as the book progresses. Rosa
Hubermann is a stern, strong woman who looks like a "wardrobe with a coat thrown over it" and
would be "cute," but appears perpetually annoyed. She peppers her language with epithets like
"Saumensch" and "Saukerl" and "Arschloch". "Sau" refers to "pig" and mensch is girl and kerl is
man, arschloch sounds pretty close to its English equivalent. From the beginning Liesel is
"saumensch," which at first refers to Rosa's annoyance at taking this girl in, even though it does
mean more money for the family. But by the end, it has become a term of true endearment. Liesel's
best friend in the village is a little boy named Rudy, "the boy next door who was obsessed with the
black American athlete Jesse Owens." Rudy is in love with Liesel and always pesters her for a kiss,
which he does finally receive, after some pretty serious turns in the story. He is a simple, almost

Excerpt From The Book Thief
In a dimly lit stone room, gathered around a simple stone table, surrounded by plain stone pillars,
eight large figures stood barking at each other in harsh, guttural tones. The room was undecorated;
made for utility without much care for how it pleased the eye. The green–skinned men occupying the
room were far better decorated, wearing coloured furs over their leather and chain armor. Each one
was adorned with a sigil representing their tribe hanging from a chain around their neck. The
largest among them, however, wore no sigil. Instead he wore a simple iron crown with no
decorations. This marked him as the chosen leader of the tribes, and he was the only one present
who held a blade. The warchief would lead them to victory, then ascend to...show more content...

would it be, then, that we want?" asked one the younger, more bold chieftains. "War" stated the
warchief, matter–of–factly, "were it anything else, none of us would be here. And I would not have
been picked to lead our united tribes." The chieftains nodded in agreement. It was now the oldest of
the chieftains who took the opportunity to speak. "Indeed, war is the purpose of this gathering." the
old chief tapped the table impatiently, indicating the maps sprawled across the table. "But it is
methods of war that we seek to discuss". The warchief snorted in derision. "If that is what you think,
then you are getting ahead of yourselves." There was a murmur of confusion among the chieftains,
which was squelched as the warchief continued, "Though our numbers have grown beyond what we

The Book Thief In the Book Thief we are introduced to an interesting character named Rudy. Rudy
was a "bony legged, sharp teethed, blue eyed boy with blonde hair." In chapter eight we are
introduced to the character when Liesel plays soccer with the Himmel Street children. Since that
part of the book we got to witness the ten year old boy grow and go through significant problems
that eventually tore apart his life. Within the book we witness the characteristics of Rudy slowly
change over time. When we first see the young boy we witness a young, full headed young boy
with big dreams about being a sprinter like Jessie owen; all the way to the point where his
demeanor completely changed and he awaits for death. Rudy's story all starts within chapter eight
when we were introduced to the kids on Himmel Street. Liesel becomes great friends with Rudy
and we got to connect with Rudy and we knew him as a spirited young child that was interested in
Leisel. In the following chapter we got to know about his interest in Leisel a little better as we
learned about the "Jesse Owens incident." In the book Rudy says, "I'll bet you a kiss I can beat
you," this quote opens up to Rudy and his crush towards leisel. At this point in the book we know
that Rudy is happy and energetic because he has a Leisel, and all he wants to do is spend more and
more time with her because she makes him happy. Rudy was feeling that wonderful, scary feeling of

The Book Thief Friendship Essay
The Book Thief is a story written by Markus Zusak and set in nazi–Germany, 1939–1943. Markus
Zusak mostly writes fiction. He has won 4 major prices with The Book Thief, like Kathleen Mitchell
Award (2006) and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (2009). The theme that is most present in the
novel is love and friendship. The theme is really well written and definitely makes up most of the
story's success.
The narrator of the story is Death. He tells about Liesel, a girl whose brother died on the train to
Molching. On the funeral of Liesels brother, she steals her first book, The Gravedigger's
Handbook. She also lost her mother once she arrived at her foster parents, Hans and Rosa
Hubermann. They are poor Germans who can barely afford housing...show more content...
He's called Max Vandenburg. Hans got the accordion from the father of Max who rescued his life
during the First World War, and promised that if his family ever needed help, he would help them out.
Max lives in the basement. He and Liesel become better friends over time. Eventually Max writes a
book for Liesel called The Standover Man, which is made over the white–painted pages of Mein
Kampf.
The theme friendship can be found through the whole story, like how Max and Liesel become good
friends and how Liesel becomes friends with Rudy, which contains signs that their relationship can
turn in more then just friends.
The theme love can be seen in a lot of different ways, like love for your family, being in love with
someone, and loving a certain object. All these ways of love are discussed in the book. For example,
Liesel first found Rudy filthy, but later in the book she kisses him. Also, Rosa swears a lot to
Liesel, but when Liesel puts herself in serious danger, she tells her to be careful, which shows she
really does love Liesel. Love for objects is also present. A big example of this are the books that
Liesel steals or receives. These book cheer her up when she feels down, and give her comfort in
times that she needs it. These books give her her own viewpoint on Germany and form her

The Book Thief "Even death has a heart." (The Book Thief, pg 242) The Book Thief by Markus
Zusak is a book of death, love, and survival. There is the death of a friend, love of a parent, and
survival of those who can take it. World War II was a devastating period and many did not have
the mental strength to survive it. The Book Thief is about Liesel Meminger and all her accounts
with death and how she coped with it, how she survives it all through words. The book is narrated
by Death, and throughout the book, he adds in his own input at times. The Book Thief makes you
realize the power that words can have, you just have to pay attention to them. The Book Thief takes
place in another time period. A time where words are the power....show more content...
Rudy was the eager–to–please next door neighbor. Although she didn't show it until his death, I
think Liesel had a special place for Rudy in her heart. All the teasing and name calling were ways
they showed affection for each other, with the exception of Rudy occasionally asking for a kiss.
It really touched me when Liesel saw Rudy, her best friend, lying in the pile of bodies and
screamed at him to wake up. "There were shocked pajamas and torn faces. It was the boy's hair
she saw first." (pg 535) Death had shown up so many times in her life, that at times, I don't think
it seemed real to her anymore. She and Rudy had watched each other grow up over the years, and
for him to die so young was wrong. Death just crept up on him, and it affected Liesel strongly.
Rudy and Liesel had a special kind of bond. Rudy was there when Liesel needed a friend, whether
she noticed or not. One concept of human geography that can be applied to The Book Thief is
centripetal forces. Centripetal forces are forces that bring a country or nation together. Usually also
they share a common past and a strong, central government. In The Book Thief, nationalism played
a strong role in binding Germany together. Hitler became a leader and convinced almost all of the
citizens of Germany that Aryans were the superior race and there should be no other race. Hitler
brainwashed people with his words. He was able to build an army of thousands to

Summary Of The Book Thief '
Although this all started out because Corey, in actuality Corey (or any of the boys) was hardly in
the book. Then when Corey was brought up to date, it took him very little effort to solved the
problem. Which make me wonder, if Kayli and the boys have told Corey the whole truth from the
beginning, perhaps less people would be injured, kidnapped, and Kayli weren't need to spend the
entire book running around in circle.
Normally I love how long the book of the series were, however since Fake has focused entirely on
the mystery solving, which could've been an interesting story, except I've thought it was overloaded
with unessential information, which made this book seem long and dull. To be honest, I couldn't
quite connect with the story, and didn't particularly enjoyed this book as much as the previous two.
In the end, I thought Fake pretty much has a repeating theme as Thief, where Kayli running around
trying to solve the mystery and saving the academy boys. She also brought back Blake, and honestly
that was the better part of the book.
This book has left me with many questions, like how did the bad guys managed to break into...show

After escaping from her kidnappers, Kayli have managed to find a cab driver that happened to be
one of her old classmate, whom helped Kayli unconditionally throughout the book. While in the
most part of the book, the academy boys didn't do much to help at all. Which bring me to another
question, in Fake, the boys seem lost, unorganized and was frankly a disappointment. Rather focus
more on the boys, the book has introduced a new character (Kayli's old classmate), and brought
back Blake and his tech guy, whom by the way showed more character than the boys in Fake.
Whatever happened to the Academy boys that I love to read about? And how on earth did the bad
guys managed to get away with roomful of Academy's people? I have no

Death states that, "I'm always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and their
beauty, and I wonder how the same thing can be both" (Zusak 491). This book shows us human
doing things that weren't even imaginable before this point. Many people give into ideas that
were lies. But, we also watch a few people go out of their way and sacrifice everything for a man
they barely even know. They do everything they can to keep him safe and alive. They work harder,
the get another job, and they even steal. In Markus Zusak's The Book Thief, death examines the
ugliness and the beauty of humans. During Markus Zusak's book we observe the beauty of humans
at many times. One of the most beautiful things a human does is when Max, the jew...show more

"Close your eyes," she'd said. "Hold out your hands" (Zusak 312). This is the start of one of the
greatest days of Liesel's life. After bringing down a little snow she decides that Max deserves
more. She brings down pots filled with snow and they make a snowman right there in their
basement just for Max. He loves it and Leisel feels good for doing it. There are also times where
Liesel and other people in the book do things that were so magnificent. There is a part where we
watch as humans are so ugly that it is hard for us to imagine that what they had done is possible.
Liesel is playing soccer in the park and all of a sudden all the kids stop because of a noise they
hear coming down the street. They think it could be a herd of cattle, but that not what it is. It is a
group of Jewish people being led, or forced, to the death camps by German soldiers. On there way
we watch a man die "He was dead. The man was dead. Just give him five minutes and he would
surely fall into the German gutter and die. They would all let him, and they would all watch"(Zusak
393). This is talking about how when a Jewish person would die, the Germans wouldn't do anything.
They wouldn't care that a man died right in front of them. While the Jews are walking Hans, Liesel
adopted father, gives them bread. While Hans is giving this man bread a German soldier notices
what is going on. He walks over to the man and, "The Jew was whipped six times. On his back, his

Book Thief Essay Questions

  • 1. Discussion Questions For The Book Thief The Book Thief Discussion Questions Kelsey Marlett Prologue/Part One 1. Death saw life in terms of color because it helped him disconnect from the emotional aspects of his job. He referred to color in terms of tastes because it makes for a more vivid, rich image. Blue would taste ice cold. Red would be hot or spicy. Yellow would be tart. Purple would be sweet. Green would be bitter. 3. Yes, I think they were right in their passive acceptance to the Nazi regime. Though I understand that it may have been more morally right to stand up against the Nazis, the important thing to realize is that if they had done so, they would have been placing their families in danger, and their families are their first priority. 6. This metaphor is saying...show more content... Franz was cruel, harshly disciplined, and unaccepting of people who were different or deemed "impure." He fully supported Hitler and his morals. Part Six/Seven 1. I think that Death's chatty tones added to the serious themes. Death had a witty and honest tone and though some parts seemed humorous, there always seemed to be several darker layers to the humor. There were many moments in the novel where his narrations would be quite chilling. An example of such a moment can be found on page 349, Death says, "Summer came. For the book thief, everything was going nicely. For me, the sky was the color of Jews." This is a striking and scary comment because it reminds us that countless Jews are dying and Liesel is just living her everyday life without giving much thought to it. 2. Rosa appears that way because it's not in her nature to openly express her love and her emotions. She shows it in her actions – for instance, the way that she always provides for her family and came to school to tell Liesel that Max woke up. 3. The Book Thief offers a unique characterization of Death by making him appear as someone who does not enjoy his job. He describes himself as having a tough boss at his shoulder, hissing "Get it done, get it done." He is constantly trying to avoid becoming emotionally attached to any of the people he has to work with and around, particularly the survivors, and has to distract himself by focusing on Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Questions On Book Thief Harkness Ashna Ramaswamy Cushner/Howland/Rosenboom World Literature 13 September 2015 Discussion Questions for Book Thief Harkness Prepare responses to two questions for Friday, September 11 and finish responding to each question over the weekend to prepare for the Harkness Discussion (note that each question has individual instructions for how to prepare it). Make sure you format and cite any quotations correctly according to MLA. Please print out this document with your notes and bring to class to use during the discussion and to hand in at the end of class. 1.What do you think Zusak is trying to convey about the power of words? Preparation: What are two different ways that words have power? Find a textual example for each. Zusak has many references to words bringing people together or tearing them apart throughout the book, which suggests that words are a powerful medium in which people connect to each other. An example of this is the quote "I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right" (Zusak 528). Referring to what I said in the beginning, Liesel talks about how she has hated the words that other people have used to tear the relationship between them, and she has loved the words that have brought her closer to characters such as Hans or Max. Additionally, Liesel talks about hoping she has made them right, which shows that Liesel knows the importance of words and reflects upon her time using them in hope that she has brought people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay On The Book Thief The title of The Book Thief fits the book very well. First of all, it sounds intellectual, which lets people know the type of reading they are about to be doing when they sit down with this book. If someone was looking for a light, fun read, this tells them not to pick this book up. Also, the phrase "the book thief", comes back many times within the novel, whether when Death is referring to Liesel, or when Liesel titles her autobiography after her unknown nickname. Character If I were to choose a character to be my best friend, I would choose Rudy Steiner. First, he clearly doesn't care what other people may think of him, as demonstrated in the Jesse Owens incident. He knew he would be made fun of, but he wanted to honor Jesse Owens, so he did it. His...show more content... Trust me though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in her hands like clouds, and she would ring them out like the rain." This quote, appearing when Liesel is struggling with reading, encompasses the important symbol of Liesel and her relationship with books. This is ultimately summed up in Max's book that he wrote for Liesel, The Word Shaker. In the story, words are planted by Hitler, until they are a massive forest of destructive ideas. Liesel, however, plants her own tree, with a seed from a tear she cried to save Max. She climbs the tree and stays there. Hitler, and many others try to cut down the tree, but they can't. One day another man comes, not to cut down the tree, but to climb it. The man who climbs the tree is Max, and they both leave the tree together. The tree finally falls, taking down some bad trees with it. Max's story was a perfect metaphor, and brought some clarity to a few topics. First it showed that, while one person can't destroy all Nazi–ism, they can still make a difference. It also brings light to the dynamic of Liesel's relationship with books. Books and words are her safe Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Book Thief Discussion Questions Book Thief Discussion Questions 1. Having Death serve as the narrator was an interesting approach for the author. I thought that Death always being in the right place at the right time was cool but at the same time erie. To me, Death was the soul collector whose purpose was to show the reader the depth of this story and not to bore them with only one view of what was going on during the story. 2. Liesel: Rosa and Hans Hubermann: Max Vandenburg: Rudy Steiner: Mrs. Hermann: в —‹ The ugly thing about Liesel was that she was a thief, however it made her who she was so it was also a beautiful thing. At one point in the story, Liesel's worst, Liesel declared that she hated words and especially Hitler. This made me sad to think that her...show more content... It was a thank you gift for her hospitality. The power of words is that it can bring people young or old together. The other main theme of The Book Thief was the kindness and cruelty of humans. The cruelty was shown by Hitler's discrimination of Jews and the kindness was shown by Hans giving bread to the Jews. According to the cruelty of Hitler, you are not supposed to sympathise with the Jews. Han's act of kindness was against the law but it shows the reader what kind of a person he really is. 10. When I read the ending I was very happy when Max was reunited with Liesel. I was also surprised when Liesel showed Mrs. Hermann the finished book. I thought that I wasn't going to hear of her again. The thing that struck me the most was when Death said "I am haunted by humans." It's usually the other way around, where humans will do anything to avoid death. I was surprised by what Death said more than anything else. I was expecting something along the lines of Liesel got a job and that was the end of her book thieving career. I was expecting the last line to be said by Death, but not in the way it said it. Death is a haunting subject and it could not have been said in a more eerie Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. Death In The Book Thief Essay Part One: Compare and contrast this persona of Death with the familiar personification of the Grim Reaper. How is Death from The Book Thief like the Grim Reaper, and how is he significantly different? People typically think of the Grim Reaper as evil and cruel, like he enjoys killing people. Death in The Book Thief, however, seems to dislike what he has to do. He says many times in the epilogue that he requires distractions to take his mind off his work, to help him deal with it. Death also feels remorse for what he has to do, and he wishes he could comfort the people who are left. In this quote on page 13, Death says, "Please, again. I ask you to believe me. I wanted to stop. To crouch down. I wanted to say: "I'm sorry, child." But that...show more content... Ilsa is isolated because she is set apart from the rest of Molching. She is rich and lives on a hill, while most everyone else is poor and lives below her. Part Four: What does this quotation mean? Why is it significant? How does it connect to an emerging theme of the novel? What is the impact of this passage on the reader? "I've seen so many young men over the years who think they're running at other young men. They are not. They're running at me," Death says. This quotation means that a lot of young men (I'm assuming soldiers) fight and go into battle thinking that they're going to fight with other soldiers and survive, but they're basically running to their deaths. This is significant because it helps to tell more of Hans Hubermann's backstory and what happened to him pre–Liesel. It also reveals a little bit what fighting in World War II was like. This quote connects to the emerging themes of death and war because it is about mortality and fighting other people in a war. This passage impacts me by making me think about death and how many soldiers die while fighting (which is something that I don't think about often). Part Five: What does Viktor Chemmel see as a basic German right? Why is this such an important quotation? Viktor Chemmel sees wanting more as a basic German right. He also thinks that taking "what is rightfully ours" is a right. He says, "No crime in wanting a little more... Wanting more is our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Thievery Quotes In The Book Thief Imagine you are a poorly fed citizen, who is living in Germany, during the World War II, what would you be doing, probably stealing something to fill up your tummy right? It is true that at the economically unstable period mentioned in the book, thievery is understandable, anything could be stolen and anyone could be a thief. However, for those who have read and understand the book thoroughly would acknowledge the importance of Liesel's' thievery characteristic.Markus Zusak, in The Book Thief characterizes Liesel as a thief to compare her theft with mutiny against Nazi Germany, other rebellious German people and the development of her personal identity. First, Zusak describes Liesel as a curious girl to create a metaphor for those who question...show more content... He couldn't be dead. He couldn't–" (23), these words indicate the similarities between Liesel and many other Germans during the period. As we all have known, during World War II, many German families has to suffer from separation. Childrens are separated from their parents, siblings are supported by each others. Just like Liesel, many in the time were departed from their parents on their way to their foster parents. Unfortunately for some of them, their siblings, who share the same journey with them cannot make it to the destination. Not only Liesel shares faiths with the rebellious German who are affected by the World War II, she is also experiencing the same feeling that they are sensing. They are all angry, they are in disbelief, that their loved ones have left them behind in the lonely world. Correspondingly, in the book The Woman With The Iron Fist, Issa has spoken "This is what I have to put up with, these rich bastards, these lazy swine..."(43). These words have spoken for the majority of Germans at the time. Through the words, the abusive tone of the character Issa, we can clearly see the spark of rebellious. Thieves were breaking into cars, stealing the garage door remotes, and gaining access to homes while residents were away at work. Car doors were left unlocked, so thieves just simply opened them up, stole the clicker, and waited patiently for the homeowners to leave the following morning; unaware that they were about to be robbed. One of the robberies in particular was frightful as the one homeowner, a woman, was in the shower and unaware a thief was in her house. Don't leave your door remote out in the open. As illustrated in the true story above, a thief can break into your car and steal your remote control. Now they have access to your home. When you get out of your garage take the remote control with you. At the very least, hide it in a more conspicuous place than the visor. This is especially important in big suburbs or cities, Boston or Las Vegas garage doors are particularly vulnerable ascrime is typically higher. Though, as in the story illustrated above, even sleepy little towns are not immune. 3. Get a keychain remote. Better than hiding your remote control, get one that is always with you. Most opener manufacturers sell keychain remotes that you can always take with you. For a less then $20 you can be sure you are not leaving yourself open and vulnerable to theft. 4. Use rolling code technology. Most older openers have security flaws in that anyone with a transceiver and some know how can park near your home and wait for you to use your remote control. When you do, they pick up the transmission and copy your code. Now they don't need to steal your remote, they just made one of their own. Rolling code technology randomly selects a new code for your opener, that only it and the remote have. It is impossible for a thief to copy Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Book Thief Essay Describe at least ONE character or individual you enjoyed reading about in the text(s).Explain why the character(s) or individual(s) helped you understand an idea in the text(s). History and especially World War Two is a testament to the duality of human nature. Jeffery Kluger in an article for Time Magazine reflects on this aspect of human nature. "The madness {lies} in the fact that the savage and the splendid can exist in one creature, one person and often in one instant." Liesel is most certainly a moral compass, helping the reader that we can counter loss and hatred with the power of words and acts of compassion. The reader further engages with her rite of passage and her witness of extreme ugliness and the beauties of human nature. Liesel in The Book Thief is a character I enjoyed reading about. She allows the reader an intimate view of one of the most shameful periods in human history yet in doing so she reminds us of some of the most compassionate acts in human history. Markus Zusak, like his character Liesel, uses powerful words to manipulate and engage the reader so that we never forget the duality of human nature and the need for compassion in the face of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. The Book Thief Matthew Zeppieri Mr. Kilgallin AP English Language 8 August 2012 The Book Thief Questions In the first chapter, I discovered who the narrator was on page 21. It specifically was revealed when the narrator is talking about the dead brother of Liesel Meminger saying, "It was exactly when I knelt down and extracted his soul, holding it limply in my swollen arms" (21). revealing the narrator's identity as Death. The narrator's diction on the page can be described as vain due to the fact he doesn't need an introduction when the narrator says it is "not really necessary" (4). The narrator's diction reveals that he has a methodical, stone cold personality that puts the narrator in a more superior position then the human race. Achieving...show more content... Also, the race is revelatory to the characters because Rudy wants to show his affection and kiss Liesel. Liesel thinks her and Rudy are only friends while Rudy will be devoted to attract her in for a kiss. As a parent explaining Rudy's actions, I would tell him that your admiration for one athlete can be extremely exuberant but painting yourself his skin color in this time where prejudice of different people was very high, it clearly isn't the smartest move. The itch in my heart is that it is morally wrong to paint yourself black and if you go that extreme with your admiration, Rudy can honestly be taken and have a higher chance to be killed by Nazi Germany. Hans and Liesel are considered to be alike because they are both passionate and kind individuals and are non supporters of the Nazi party. Both were against the Nazi Party but Liesel couldn't go under the radar like Hans could. Another difference between the two is that Hans had more integrity and honor buy purchasing his step–daughter a book while Liesel stole books. Liesel most definitely could have trusted Rudy with the secret of having Max hidden in her basement. Rudy was clearly Liesel's best friend and partner in crime when Liesel was doing her acts of thievery stealing the books from the mayor's wife bookself. The devotion to Liesel Rudy also had was strong and I believe Liesel could have trusted Rudy. Max is also a book thief and that makes more than one book thief. Honors The Book Thief Questions 1.Based on the title of the novel The Book Thief I expected the book to be about a person who became involved in stealing books. I imagined it to be about some kind of challenging time where it was not good to have books causing someone to need to steal the books. 2. The narrator of the novel is death. He is sarcastic and gives the book some comic relief when it is an intense part of the novel. Liesel Meminger is the main character. She is a little girl who at first does not like her foster parents but eventually warms up to them and loves them. Hans Hubberman is the father of Liesel. He is compassionate and helps Liesel with her learning. Rosa Hubberman is the new mother of Liesel. She is strict with her and seems very tough. Rudy Steiner is Liesel's best friend. He wants to be a professional runner and has a huge crush on Liesel. Liesel has a hard time adjusting to her surroundings when she moves in with the Hubberman's. She is defensive with them at first but then begins to earn their trust and connects with them in a great way. She realizes that books help her not only learn to read and write but also understand more of what is going on around her. She starts stealing books because she is curious and wants to know more. 3. Three minor characters include Max Vandenburg, Frau Hermann, and Tommy Mueller. Max is in hiding form the Nazi's and goes to the Hubermans for help. • 12. The Book Thief The Book Thief The book I will be discussing is The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. This historical fiction novel's central question is about how humans can do both the most beautiful and the most appalling things. Therefore, this central question is, what are humans capable of? How are they capable of such great things, as well, as such horrible things? In this essay, I argue that The Book Thief has more than one important theme and all of them helped to advance the plot and influence the story. The Book Thief is the story, Narrated by Death, of Liesel Meminger, a nine–year–old German girl who is surrendered by her mom to live with...show more content... The small demonstrations of kindness we see when Ilsa Hermann welcomes Liesel into her library, and Rudy gives the teddy bear to the dying pilot. Then, we see comparative demonstrations of creulty, for example, Viktor Chemmel's and Franz Deutcher's treatment of Rudy. We also see significantly more extreme examples of each. The Hubermanns demonstrate an extraordinary example of kindess by looking after Max. They keep him alive at extraordinary danger to themselves and treat him with the most extreme sweetness and openess. Not only that, they care for him physically by giving nourishment and care as well as inwardly, making him feel like a part of their family. Liesel specifically is caring to Max, and the two create a strong bond. Given the political setting of the time, with disdain and savagery against Jews being common, Max obviously considers Liesel's kindess to be remarkable. In the mean time, the inhumane imprisonments for Jews sit inconspicuously out of sight of the book as the most compelling illustration of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Review Of 'The Book Thief' Essays Review of: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak It seems sometimes like the market for young adult literature is written down to the readers, almost in a condescending manner. That is why a book like The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is so refreshing in this sea of cookie cutter romances and fantasies. While classified as a young adult novel, it deals with very serious themes. The book's cover comes printed with this label: "It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still." It is a dark allusion to what is to come. But Zusak makes this story more accessible to the audience he is writing to and does this by creating identifiable characters, by bringing humor into...show more content... Hans is a passionate, caring man who earns his living as a house painter by day and an accordion player by night. Liesel believes his eyes show kindness, and is closer to him from the beginning than to her foster mother. He is one of a few in their village who is not a registered member of the Nazi party, which comes to have serious repercussions on the family as the book progresses. Rosa Hubermann is a stern, strong woman who looks like a "wardrobe with a coat thrown over it" and would be "cute," but appears perpetually annoyed. She peppers her language with epithets like "Saumensch" and "Saukerl" and "Arschloch". "Sau" refers to "pig" and mensch is girl and kerl is man, arschloch sounds pretty close to its English equivalent. From the beginning Liesel is "saumensch," which at first refers to Rosa's annoyance at taking this girl in, even though it does mean more money for the family. But by the end, it has become a term of true endearment. Liesel's best friend in the village is a little boy named Rudy, "the boy next door who was obsessed with the black American athlete Jesse Owens." Rudy is in love with Liesel and always pesters her for a kiss, which he does finally receive, after some pretty serious turns in the story. He is a simple, almost naГЇve boy, and would do almost anything for her, including jumping into a nearly Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Excerpt From The Book Thief In a dimly lit stone room, gathered around a simple stone table, surrounded by plain stone pillars, eight large figures stood barking at each other in harsh, guttural tones. The room was undecorated; made for utility without much care for how it pleased the eye. The green–skinned men occupying the room were far better decorated, wearing coloured furs over their leather and chain armor. Each one was adorned with a sigil representing their tribe hanging from a chain around their neck. The largest among them, however, wore no sigil. Instead he wore a simple iron crown with no decorations. This marked him as the chosen leader of the tribes, and he was the only one present who held a blade. The warchief would lead them to victory, then ascend to...show more content... When the warchief was sure that he had the room's attention, he spoke again. "Each of you want the same thing." he declared, "Yet none of you want to accept that you are in agreement with the other." The chieftains scowled at warchief, but said nothing. They knew he spoke the truth. "And what would it be, then, that we want?" asked one the younger, more bold chieftains. "War" stated the warchief, matter–of–factly, "were it anything else, none of us would be here. And I would not have been picked to lead our united tribes." The chieftains nodded in agreement. It was now the oldest of the chieftains who took the opportunity to speak. "Indeed, war is the purpose of this gathering." the old chief tapped the table impatiently, indicating the maps sprawled across the table. "But it is methods of war that we seek to discuss". The warchief snorted in derision. "If that is what you think, then you are getting ahead of yourselves." There was a murmur of confusion among the chieftains, which was squelched as the warchief continued, "Though our numbers have grown beyond what we can sustain on the light shafts we currently control, I am not convinced that war with the pale–skins will benefit our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Daniel Martinez Period 3 The Book Thief In the Book Thief we are introduced to an interesting character named Rudy. Rudy was a "bony legged, sharp teethed, blue eyed boy with blonde hair." In chapter eight we are introduced to the character when Liesel plays soccer with the Himmel Street children. Since that part of the book we got to witness the ten year old boy grow and go through significant problems that eventually tore apart his life. Within the book we witness the characteristics of Rudy slowly change over time. When we first see the young boy we witness a young, full headed young boy with big dreams about being a sprinter like Jessie owen; all the way to the point where his demeanor completely changed and he awaits for death. Rudy's story all starts within chapter eight when we were introduced to the kids on Himmel Street. Liesel becomes great friends with Rudy and we got to connect with Rudy and we knew him as a spirited young child that was interested in Leisel. In the following chapter we got to know about his interest in Leisel a little better as we learned about the "Jesse Owens incident." In the book Rudy says, "I'll bet you a kiss I can beat you," this quote opens up to Rudy and his crush towards leisel. At this point in the book we know that Rudy is happy and energetic because he has a Leisel, and all he wants to do is spend more and more time with her because she makes him happy. • 16. The Book Thief Friendship Essay The Book Thief is a story written by Markus Zusak and set in nazi–Germany, 1939–1943. Markus Zusak mostly writes fiction. He has won 4 major prices with The Book Thief, like Kathleen Mitchell Award (2006) and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (2009). The theme that is most present in the novel is love and friendship. The theme is really well written and definitely makes up most of the story's success. The narrator of the story is Death. He tells about Liesel, a girl whose brother died on the train to Molching. On the funeral of Liesels brother, she steals her first book, The Gravedigger's Handbook. She also lost her mother once she arrived at her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Hans got the accordion from the father of Max who rescued his life during the First World War, and promised that if his family ever needed help, he would help them out. Max lives in the basement. He and Liesel become better friends over time. Eventually Max writes a book for Liesel called The Standover Man, which is made over the white–painted pages of Mein Kampf. The theme friendship can be found through the whole story, like how Max and Liesel become good friends and how Liesel becomes friends with Rudy, which contains signs that their relationship can turn in more then just friends. The theme love can be seen in a lot of different ways, like love for your family, being in love with someone, and loving a certain object. All these ways of love are discussed in the book. For example, Liesel first found Rudy filthy, but later in the book she kisses him. Also, Rosa swears a lot to Liesel, but when Liesel puts herself in serious danger, she tells her to be careful, which shows she really does love Liesel. Love for objects is also present. A big example of this are the books that Liesel steals or receives. These book cheer her up when she feels down, and give her comfort in times that she needs it. These books give her her own viewpoint on Germany and form her Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Book Thief The Book Thief "Even death has a heart." (The Book Thief, pg 242) The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a book of death, love, and survival. There is the death of a friend, love of a parent, and survival of those who can take it. World War II was a devastating period and many did not have the mental strength to survive it. The Book Thief is about Liesel Meminger and all her accounts with death and how she coped with it, how she survives it all through words. The book is narrated by Death, and throughout the book, he adds in his own input at times. The Book Thief makes you realize the power that words can have, you just have to pay attention to them. Although she didn't show it until his death, I think Liesel had a special place for Rudy in her heart. All the teasing and name calling were ways they showed affection for each other, with the exception of Rudy occasionally asking for a kiss. It really touched me when Liesel saw Rudy, her best friend, lying in the pile of bodies and screamed at him to wake up. "There were shocked pajamas and torn faces. It was the boy's hair she saw first." (pg 535) Death had shown up so many times in her life, that at times, I don't think it seemed real to her anymore. She and Rudy had watched each other grow up over the years, and for him to die so young was wrong. Death just crept up on him, and it affected Liesel strongly. Rudy and Liesel had a special kind of bond. Rudy was there when Liesel needed a friend, whether she noticed or not. One concept of human geography that can be applied to The Book Thief is centripetal forces. Centripetal forces are forces that bring a country or nation together. Usually also they share a common past and a strong, central government. In The Book Thief, nationalism played a strong role in binding Germany together. Hitler became a leader and convinced almost all of the citizens of Germany that Aryans were the superior race and there should be no other race. Hitler brainwashed people with his words. Then when Corey was brought up to date, it took him very little effort to solved the problem. Which make me wonder, if Kayli and the boys have told Corey the whole truth from the beginning, perhaps less people would be injured, kidnapped, and Kayli weren't need to spend the entire book running around in circle. Normally I love how long the book of the series were, however since Fake has focused entirely on the mystery solving, which could've been an interesting story, except I've thought it was overloaded with unessential information, which made this book seem long and dull. To be honest, I couldn't quite connect with the story, and didn't particularly enjoyed this book as much as the previous two. In the end, I thought Fake pretty much has a repeating theme as Thief, where Kayli running around trying to solve the mystery and saving the academy boys. There are also times where Liesel and other people in the book do things that were so magnificent. There is a part where we watch as humans are so ugly that it is hard for us to imagine that what they had done is possible. Liesel is playing soccer in the park and all of a sudden all the kids stop because of a noise they hear coming down the street. They think it could be a herd of cattle, but that not what it is.
