Mediation is often assessed in terms of single factor only whether involved parties reached settlement or not, irrespective of the way in which it was steered or the quality of the outcome.
While effectiveness of outcome is obviously important, there is wider range of indicators of a competent and effective mediation.

  1. 1. Mediation is often assessed in terms of single factor only: whether involved parties reached settlement or not, irrespective of the way in which it was steered or the quality of the outcome. While effectiveness of outcome is obviously important, there is wider range of indicators of a competent and effective mediation. By way of example or illustration, mediation could be assessed in terms of the following: EMPOWERMENT The extent to which a mediator coaches parties about constructive problem solving and equips them to deal with disputes in the future themselves. The extent to which parties are satisfied with a mediator’s conduct of the mediation and their subjective experience of the process, its inclusiveness and its fairness. PROCESS  The extent to which the mediation process is cost and time effective and maximizes the value of result. EFFICIENCY  The extent to which mediation achieves a settlement or conclusion. OUTCOME The extent to which the mediation process increases the understanding and improves the relationship between the parties. RELATIONSHIP DURABILITY  The extent to which a mediation outcome sustains over a period of time. EFFECTIVENESS  The extent to which the mediation achieves parties’ particular goals, such as a durable settlement, an ongoing working relationship or any other of the above-mentioned factors. INDICATORS OF EFFECTIVE MEDIATION © Prerna Foundation || www.prernafoundation.org || Reference: Mediation - A How to Guide, Laurence Boulle & Nadja Alexander, LexisNexis While these indicators cannot be analysed further, they constitute some of the standards by which mediator's competence and mediation effectiveness can be assessed. Essentially these factors indicate that mediators should resist being assessed in terms of the single quantitative indicator of whether they achieved settlements or not, but rather in terms of the pluralistic indicators as referred above.
