Birdsong Coursework Task:
Write the letter that Stephen Wraysford wrote to Jeanne
Fourmentier after his escape from the tunnel at the end
of section 6 of Birdsong, describing his thoughts about
being trapped underground, his attitude to Weir and
Firebrace and his feelings for Jeanne. The letter should
create Stephen’s voice, capturing Faulks’ use of form,
structure and language and building on the novelist’s
presentation of character.
Must be:
Approx 1200 words
Due in Tue 4th December 2012
If w/p, clear font, size 12, double
line spaced.
3. • Spell every character’s name accurately
• Do not use exclamation marks and be careful
with rhetorical questions. Does Faulks use
these?
• sp – as it’s c/wk, there shouldn’t be a single
spelling error (be careful with Americanisms –
‘honor’)
• exp – expression
• h/p – homophone
• No abbreviations
• No colloquialisms
• No modern expressions
