Performance Instructor
Dr Gennaro Russo has a PhD in aerospace engineering and specializes in fluid dynamics, hypersonics, re-entry
and space transportation. He has over 25 years of experience with unmanned space systems. He teaches the
introduction to unmanned space systems course for UVU for the Doctorate and Masters Degree in
Unmanned Space Systems Engineering. He is a lecturer for the Masters Degree in Space Transportation
Systems and Satellites and Space Platforms at the University La Sapienza, Rome. From 2002 to 2012 he was
the manager of CIRA (Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali) dedicated to space. In particular, he served as
head of President’s Office for Institutional Relations Development, Head of the Space System Div, Head of
Space Labs & Facilities Division including the 70MW Plasma Wind Tunnel SCIROCCO, Head of the Space
Programs Management Division, Program Manager of the USV (Unmanned Space Vehicles Program and
Director of USV Drop Trans- and Supersonic Flight Tests campaigns From 1988 to 2001, he was an employee
of CIRA (Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali), serving as Head of the Space Activities and Technology,
International Relations, Strategic Marketing, Project Manager of the program CRYO, concerning the
realization of a facility to test and qualify the liquid oxigen turbo-pumps (LOx-TP) of the space launchers'
engines of the ARIANE V class, Head of the Aerothermodynamics Dept. He has been responsible of the
activities carried out in the frame of MSTP (Manned Space Transportation Program) and FESTIP (Future
European Space Transportation Investigation Program) under ESA related contracts, Member of the CIRA
Research Coordination Committee, Member of the CIRA Computational Labs Managing Committee, Program
Manager of the Hypersonics/Hermes related activities. He has been in charge of coordination and scientific
responsibility of Italian Fluidynamic Studies within the ESA Hermes R&D Preparatory Program, and of the
program "Atmospheric Re-entry Aerothermodynamics” funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

From 1981 to 1987, he was a fellow of the Institute of Aerodynamics "U. Nobile" (IAUN), University of Naples
and served as IAUN-side Project Manager for the definition and design of the Microgravity Advanced
Research and Support (MARS) Centre, as part of the ground segment of the European Space Station
COLUMBUS, and a member of the team that proposed, designed, tested, controlled and analyzed
experiments performed on board the missions FSLP (1983) and D1 (1985) of the SHUTTLE/SPACELAB
program. He is the author of more than 100 papers presented at national/international congresses and/or
published by international journals mainly in the fields of Microgravity, Fluidynamics, Supersonics,
Hypersonics, Wind Tunnel Design, Space Related Testing Facilities, Reusable Launch Vehicles, Re-entry
Technologies, Tethered Systems. He is or has been member of the International Academy of Astronautics, the
International Astronautical Federation committees on Commercial Human Spaceflight Safety, Space
Societies, Space Exploration, Space Transportation, Space Propulsion, Student Activities. He also member of
Launchers Program Board of ESA, Association of European Research Establishments in Aerospace (EREA),
Chairman of the SCG (Strategy and Coordination Group) of EREA, Manned Spaceflight Program Advisory
Committee, FDP-WG-18 of AGARD, Centre for Low Gravity Fluid Mechanics and Transport Phenomena) of the
University of Colorado (USA).
