2. Representations of Women in
music videos.
S Women in music videos are often sexualised. They are
dress & dance provocatively.
S There are many arguments for and against this idea, for
example some people are for this because women are
asserting their femininity and expressing themselves
sexually, however some people are again this because
this is damaging and problematic as if males did this it
would more than likely be seen as offensive.
3. Laura Mulvey
S Laura Mulvey suggest that women are objectified and
seen ‘to-be-looked-at-ness’ in films.
S They become an object of desire and are positioned for
the pleasure of the male viewer. Meaning they are placed
on the screen for the ‘Male Gaze.’
4. The Male Gaze
S The male gaze is a concept coined by feminist film critic
Laura Mulvey. It refers to the way media is structured
around masculine viewer. It describes the tendency in
visual culture to depict the world and women from a
masculine point of view and in terms of men’s attitudes.
S This is done through many videos nowadays. An
example of the male gaze in a video is Pitbull’s song
‘Timber.’

5. Challenging Representations
S Some female artists challenge the stereotypes and are
rarely sexualised eg, Adele, Meghan Trainor and Lorde.
S These artist subvert expectations offering empowering
lyrics and stunning vocals rather then their looks like
other artist like Nicki Minaj.
6. Masculinity
S The more closely that a male conforms to expected and what
we have all come to accept as traditional characteristics of
masculinity, the closer he is to being a “Real Man.”
S Despite masculinity undergoing drastic changes in recent
times, there is still strong representation of the four themes of
the male sex role,( stoic, aggressive, dependable and not
feminine.)
S An example of a male singer who meets these masculine
stereotypes is a singer like Kayne West however a male who
does not really meet these stereotypes is someone like Justin
Bieber.
7. Hegemonic Masculinity
S Hegemonic masculinity is competitive and reflects a
tendency for males to seek to dominate other males and
subordinate females.
S Characteristics such as a drive, ambition, claims to self-
reliance, heterosexuality, misogynistic and being
aggressive.
8. Homo-Eroticism
S Sexual attraction between members of the same sex,
either male-male or female-female. The concept differs
from the concept of homosexuality; it refers specifically to
the desire itself, which can be temporary, whereas
“homosexuality” implies a more permanent state of
identity or sexual orientation.
