"And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at His doctrine/teaching: For He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes"
2. Preaching with Power!
Mt 7:28-29 And so it was, when
Jesus had ended these sayings,
that the people were astonished at
His teaching, for He taught them as
one having authority, and not as the
scribes.
3. Who was the greatest preacher to ever
walk this earth?
What made His preaching better?
▪ How important is preaching?
▸Rom 10:14-15 How then shall they call on Him
in whom they have not believed? And how shall
they believe in Him of whom they have not
heard? And how shall they hear without a
preacher? And how shall they preach unless they
are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the
feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!"
4. The foolishness of preaching!
▪ 1Cor 1:18 For the message of the cross is
foolishness to those who are perishing, but to
us who are being saved it is the power of God.
▪ 1Cor 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God,
the world through wisdom did not know God, it
pleased God through the foolishness of the
message preached to save those who believe.
▪ 1Co 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified, to
the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks
foolishness
5. Jesus did not preach like others!
Who were the preachers/teachers of the day?
▪ They taught tradition over truth!
▸Mt. 15:1-9
▪ Their words and the works didn’t match!
▸Mt. 23:3
▪ They would preach/teach only to be seen
by men!
▸Mt. 6:1-2, 5, 16; 23:5
6. I. The Design!
▪ Where did Jesus get His message? Where should we
get our message if we desire it to have real power?
▸Jn. 7:16-17 Jesus answered them and said, "My
doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. "If anyone
wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the
doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on
My own authority.”
▸1 Pet 4:11 “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the
oracles of God.”
▸The Word of Christ will judge us in the end!
– Jn. 12:48
7. When we design what is to be preached,
we want to make sure it is God’s message
we are teaching!
▪ We need to be careful to always hold out Jesus
and not ourselves!
▪ We want to share with them and show them
the Father and not ourselves!
▸Jn. 14:9
▪ It is not enough to be entertaining, it is not
enough to be likeable, we need to be
“proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ!”
8. II. The Delivery!
Did everyone always respond the same?
▪ It is important for us to understand that not
everyone liked Jesus’ preaching! Many times
some got angry and wanted to stone Him!
▸Jn. 8:59; 10:31; 11:8
▪ As we read through the Gospel of John, it
seems that Jesus’ popularity continues to grow
for sometime, but then He gives them some
“hard teachings” in chapter 6!
▸Jn. 6:60
9. When we preach and teach we should
understand these results will follow!
Just because we don't have 5,000 listening to us
don’t mean we are not preaching with power!
▪ The power is in the message and not the
messenger, what is preached and not just the
preacher!
▸I planted, Apollos watered but God gave the
increase! (1 Cor. 3:4-9)
▪ Our delivery needs to be first & foremost faithful
to God! Not everyone response the same! (Jude
1:22-23)
10. III. The Difference!
Did Jesus make a difference in the lives of others, by
His preaching?
▪ Who was Jesus’ message open to? Did He play
favorites?
▸Mt 11:28-30 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest. "Take My yoke
upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly
in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. "For My
yoke is easy and My burden is light."
▸Rev. 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!"
And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who
thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of
life freely.
11. We need to be careful not to play
favorites!
▪ This can easily become a problem if we are not
careful!
▸“But if you show partiality, you are committing
sin and are convicted by the law as
transgressors.” (Js. 2:9)
▪ The first half of James 2 warns against this! (Js.
2:1-13)
▪ God plays no favorites!
▸Act. 10:34; Rom. 2:11; Eph. 6:9
▸We need to be willing to reach all men!
12. Conclusion:
▪ Truly Jesus’ preaching & teaching was powerful!
He taught like no one else!
▪ We too can have this power in our preaching if
we will learn to preach like Jesus! Understanding
these 3 things!
▸The Design (filled with the Word of God!)
▸The Delivery (give men what they need not
what they want!)
▸The Difference (seek to reach all men!)
▪ Have you come to know Jesus, have you been
forgiven and set free?
