1. Greetings, my name is Jeff Lundberg. I am the Senior Product Marketing Manager for Hitachi Content Platform, and I’d like to introduce you to some of the new features of HCP 5.0.
2. First off, Hitachi Content Platform version 5.0 brings significant increases in the number of tenants and namespaces. It now supports 1000 tenants and 10,000 namespaces. This enables enterprise IT shops and cloud service providers to host more users, workloads and customers in a single system. This enables greater consolidation and simplifies management for a better return on investment.With so much data and so many workloads in one place, high availability is of great importance. With version 5.0, HCP does not require any planned downtime and unplanned downtime is all but eliminated through advanced replication and non-disruptive failover. In addition, performance and component monitoring combined with email alerting helps administrators proactively identify any system health or performance bottleneck issues so they can be addressed before they impact SLAs.
3. To complement the large number of tenants and namespaces, HCP 5.0 expands the options for how to connect to those tenants and namespaces. In addition to HTTP/REST, HCP now supports NFS, CIFS, WebDAV and SMTP as well as Symantec’s Enterprise Vault ‘Streamer’ interface. This enables just about any user or application to take advantage of HCP’s rich functionality.With all of these users and their data in one system, security needs to be robust and easy to manage. With version 5.0, security is enforced not just at the tenant and namespace, but all the way down to the object level. And, with Active Directory integration, security is much easier to manage as administrators do not need to create the permissions within HCP and access control is governed from a single source. This has the added benefit that applications no longer need to worry about security as the storage system will take care of that.
4. A key new capability in HCP version 5.0 is the spin down architecture. With its rich metadata features HCP is able to target the right objects for the right use of spin down. Cases where, even at massive scale, the likelihood of volume spin up for occassional object access is extremely low.Customer see the value of HCP as “backup-free”, you don’t need to backup data store on HCP. Extra local copies of objects and off-site DR copies are two of many reasons HCP can make this claim. Now those values are improved further by placing that content on spindown media to further reduce costs of this protection.It also aligns with our theme to help service providers and large enterprises who can garner economies of scale from power savings of spun down disk drives.
5. HCP 5.0 also features a Metadata Query Engine. This tool enables administrators to search the system and custom metadata of stored objects to help them identify related objects and better understand what is in the object store. This can be used in a variety of ways, from content discovery, to content management to gathering usage metrics. This tool is not a replacement for the HCP Search option which indexes and searches the content of objects, but it does provide an easy way for administrators to better understand what is in their HCP, how it is being used and provides a solid first step toward Big Data analytics.
6. What this all means for customers is:Cost savings in the forms of improved efficiency and utilization through consolidation, as well as dramatic reductions in backup costsOperational efficiency in the forms of Faster backup and restore of primary systems, always-on operations, and providing an easy way to share and distribute contentAnd flexibility in the many ways for organizations to get at the benefits of HCP either through a traditional purchase, a Hitachi Cloud Service or using Hitachi Data Ingestor to connect smaller, remote and branch offices to a central HCP.
