- Delaware Park provides is rich and vibrant gathering space with parkland, flowing lakes, gardens and historic structures. One of the first three parks designed by America’s premier landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, the park overlooks the majestic Hoyt Lake, the stately Albright Knox Art Gallery and the grand Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society Museum.
- Rebuilding the parks includes rebuilding the historic features and structures that played such an important role in the overall Olmstedian experience of each park landscape. There is a tremendous legacy to Delaware Park’s historic structures….including a gazebo, settees, bandstand and boathouse.
- The map above shows the pathway in yellow to be restored and the orange-colored extensions for the Celebration Walk.
- Delaware Park is at the heart of the city offering beautiful vantage points and an appropriate setting for commemorative /memorial placards. Already established as one of the historic Olmsted Park’s most memorable and popular locations, the waterfront path system is proposed for significant improvements that restore historic elements, enhance the visitor experience and improve the visual quality of this remarkable place.
- Among the other features: The Bandstand, a two story structure built along the lake with striking long vistas toward Forest Lawn Cemetery. Considered a perfect amphitheater this handsome wooden structure had a terracotta tile roof and was also designed by Calvert Vaux.
- The Spirehead Gazebo is a unique gothic shingle style structure originally designed by Frederick Law Olmsted’s partner Calvert Vaux. This landmark was built on a small hilltop that still overlooks the lake. Surely one of the most romantic park structures ever built, a rebuilt Gazebo is destined to become a favorite spot along the water’s edge. The estimate to reconstruct Spirehead in 1993 was $350,000.
- Vaux Settees – were Unique high Victorian benches used for many years by families waiting to go boating or to listen to band concerts in the nearby bandstand. The wooden, carved and painted benches had a unique tile roof that matched the bandstand and the original roof on the Marcy Casino.
- The Conservancy is planning to use select sections of the pathways around the Marcy Casino, near Hoyt Lake to lay a foundation of pavers or tiles. These brick pieces will be engraved as memorials and will add to the celebratory and historic significance of the area.
- These living tributes sell for $50 – for a bunch of perennial spring blooms to $250 for flowering shrubs to $350 for a new tree to $3500 for a park bench. An entire legacy landscape garden starts at $15,000. Naming plaques start at $25,000 and name rights start at $300,000.
- As part of the park’s Master Plan, the Plan for the 21 st Century , Delaware Park will soon be the focus of intensive restoration. A generous grant from State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt will pay for the restoration of the 1 mile pathway area. Repaving and smoothing the pathway around the lake will allow for safe and comfortable walking for pedestrians and persons with disabilities. New lighting and benches will also be installed
