Collection Development PlanJoAnna Blair Young
Description of Site
Perdue Elementary is in Warner Robins, GA which is a part of the Houston County School System. There are a total of 560 students in grades 3-5. There are 10 3rd grade teachers, 7 4th grade teachers, and 7 5th grade teachers. There is 1 special education teacher with a parapro and an autism teacher with a parapro. A reading EIP teacher and a math EIP teacher go into the classrooms to offer extra assistance and instruction to the at-risk students. There is also 1 speech, 1 ESOL, and 2 gifted teachers. For my plan, I decided to focus on the 4th grade Georgia Performance Standards. In the 4th grade at Perdue Elementary, there are a total of 182 students. Of those, 96 are male and 86 are female. The races of the class include 11 Hispanic, 40 Black, 2 American Indian, 15 of 2 or more races, 7 Asian, and 107 White. The number of students qualifying for free or reduced meals is 33%.
Races Gender
3360968-98298132130-99761
Perdue Elementary's Media Center is operated by 1 Media Specialist and 1 Media Clerk. The media center houses over 14,000 books and resources. There are 4 computers that are available for student use as well as a computer lab across the hall that has close to 30 computers that visitors to the media center may also use. These computers all contain Safari which is the search tool for finding items to check out in the media center; Safari is also on all the computers in the entire school for easy access to what the library holds. There are a variety of other technology items that must be kept in the media center such as overhead projectors, laminating machine, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, and the CPS system with clickers.
There are 7 4th grade classrooms at Perdue Elementary. The students change classes so they go to one 4th grade teacher for language arts and another teacher for math, social studies, and science. Of the 182 students in the 4th grade, 18 are in special education, 26 are EIP students, 5 go to speech, 14 are gifted, and 3 are ESOL. The reading levels of these 4th graders range from 2.1-6.9 based on the STAR reading test.
Curriculum Review
Perdue Elementary School uses Harcourt Science textbooks, Georgia edition, for their Science curriculum as well as the Georgia Performance Standards set forth by the state. The Georgia Performance Standards that I chose to focus on in this collection development plan and materials order is below.
4th Grade
Earth Science
S4E1. Students will compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars, star patterns, and planets.
a. Recognize the physical attributes of stars in the night sky such as number, size, color and patterns.
b. Compare the similarities and differences of planets to the stars in appearance, position, and number in the night sky.
c. Explain why the pattern of stars in a constellation stays the same, but a planet can be seen in different locations at different times.
d. Identify how technology is used to observe distant objects in the sky.
S4E2. Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the moon.
a. Explain the day/night cycle of the earth using a model.
b. Explain the sequence of the phases of the moon.
c. Demonstrate the revolution of the earth around the sun and the earth’s tilt to explain the seasonal changes.
Demonstrate the relative size and order from the sun of the planets in the solar system.
The 4th grade teachers do one unit on planets and they teach all the planets, the phases of the moon, the sun, earth's rotation, the seasons, which all align with the standards. A few resources that accommodate the textbook are videos in the library, United Streaming videos, web sites that they show on the TV in the classrooms so the students may view Astronomy images and information.
Collection Evaluation
When viewing the collection in the media center, I noticed that there were a lot of specifics lacking to accommodate the standards. The majority of the standards involve stars and there were just a few books on this subject. Also, there were basic books in a series about the planets and sun and moon but none gave much information related to the standards such as phases of the moon or the seasons related to the earth's tilt. I did notice that there are more than 10 videos on astronomy; however, most deal with planets and the majority of the videos are aged. I also noticed in my observation of the media center's collection that there were not many other materials that teachers or students could check out as aids or reference materials to assist with projects or to assist the teachers in teaching the lessons.
An interview was conducted with the 4th grade teachers. We discussed their need for materials related to Astronomy. They noted that they see themselves using United Streaming a lot because of the absence of current and content-related audiovisual materials in the library. If there were more videos, the teachers would come to the library before using United Streaming. Also, the students create different models of requirements in the standards such as the phases of the moon and the size and order of the planets; more books with illustrations could aid the students while completing these projects.
I obtained my evaluation of Perdue Elementary School’s library collection from TitleWise. Perdue’s Media Center lacked sufficient materials for Astronomy in the Natural Sciences/Mathematics sections. There are 1,099 books in the entire 500s section, and of those, only 100 pertain to Astronomy. Earth Science is a complete GPS standard in the 4th grade with subjects related to Astronomy making up a few of the standards. As for Earth Science, the media center holds 131 items. There are some books that can be found here for my topic. Another weakness of this collection is the age of the books. According to TitleWise, Perdue’s Astronomy and Allied Science section and the Earth Sciences section both have an average date of 1990. TitleWise analyzed that 98% of the Astronomy section is out-of-date for the subject type. This evaluation tool noted that this section’s books should not be more than 5 years old from publication date. There are a total of 182 4th grade students at Perdue with only 100 books to select from in the media center on Astronomy.
I also had the Media Specialist pull the circulation statistics for the Science 500 section. There are 395 books that have been checked out from this section spanning from 8/3/09 – 1/31/09. This shows that there is interest in the sciences section so the collection should be up to date and have a wide selection.
Consideration List
The list in which I created for the materials order of Astronomy materials is in the attached document named, CollectionList. The budget summary is included in that list that shows money to be spent at each vendor and the total money that would be spent if this list was purchased.
This is the link to my web page that has Astronomy links listed.
http://jbyoung.pbworks.com/Resource-links-on-Astronomy
