Logo for the class on Ancient Greece

  1. 1. The Logo for our class Heracles, the hero and god, clad in the pelt of the Nemean lion, with his olive-wood club. Paragon of masculinity, extraordinary strength, courage, ingenuity and sexual prowess with both males and females were among his attributes. Although he was not as clever as Odysseus, Heracles used his wits on several occasions when his strength did not suffice. Here he holds his kylix (κύλιξ), the two-handled drinking cup, which the goddess fills with her oinochoe (οἰνοχόη), the pitcher for wine, inevitably mixed with water. Behind them, a stylized version of the olive tree. Thus the two great items of Greek agriculture and commerce are symbolized. and Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Athena is also a shrewd companion of heroes and is the goddess of heroic endeavour. She is the virgin patron of Athens. The Athenians founded the Parthenon on the Acropolis of her namesake city, Athens (Athena Parthenos), in her honor. Athena's veneration as the patron of Athens seems to have existed from the earliest times, and was so persistent that archaic myths about her were recast to adapt to cultural changes. In her role as a protector of the city (polis), many people throughout the Greek world worshiped Athena as Athena Polias (Ἀθηνᾶ Πολιάς "Athena of the city"). The city of Athens and the goddess Athena essentially bear the same name,"Athenai" meaning "[many] Athenas". Here, she is represented as Athena Promachos (front-line fighter), with her helmet and spear. Ares was the god of war’s bloody and brutal side. She, the goddess of war’s brainy and just side. She holds her totemic owl in her left hand. Wikipedia with editing & additional comments
