Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome to Strathmore Secondary College library. The purpose of this session is to introduce you to the library. Please pay attention and raise your hand if you have any questions. At the end of this presentation you will have a chance to use this information and test your library skills. My name is ………………….. and I am one of 4 library staff that work in the library. CLICK 
  2. The library is a place for learning. You can approach any of the library staff at the desk if you have a question or need help. CLICK  Ask us
  3. Does anyone know what ICT stands for? It is IT with a C in the middle. CLICK  Information Communication Technologies. The C stands for communication because IT helps us to communicate with each other and share ideas and information. The ICTs we have in the library are: CLICK  Computers: We have 18 computers available for students to use for schoolwork only. That means no games! Computers are accessed with your user name and password. These will be given out over the next 2 weeks in class. This password is not to be given to, or used by, any other students in the school. It is for your own private use. Keep it in a safe place. CLICK  Wireless Internet CLICK  • Printers/Photocopiers: Printing: Any work you print from the computers goes to the printer/photocopier. Your printing account will be automatically debited. You can add credit to your account by paying at the Finance Office-This takes time to be processed! Photocopying: If you need to photocopy you require a photocopy card, not coins. These cards are available from the Loans desk for either $2 or $5. Black and white copies cost 10 cents, colour copies $1.00. CLICK  • iPads: We have 5 iPads which can be borrowed from the desk during lunchtimes. You must present your ID card on borrowing. CLICK  Library Catalogue station: The 4 computers over by the computer pods are the Library Catalogue Station. The Library Catalogue is a database that allows you to search for items in the library collection. We will go over the basics of a search later in this talk. CLICK 
  4. Space for relaxation The library is a place for relaxation and quiet reading. We also have MAGAZINES like Dolly, Girlfriend, Hyper & Mad, kept on the Magazine rack at the front of the library. BOOK DISPLAYS - New books are added to our library display every week and may be borrowed just like any other book. Also join your public library! Another way to access information – online and for borrowing. Moreland and Moonee Valley libraries are the local ones. CLICK 
  5. Borrowing: Students can borrow up to 6 books for a 2 week period and renew them up to 2 times, unless it is reserved by another student. Save time by presenting your student ID card when borrowing. Books are to be returned by the due date through the book return slot at the loans desk. You can’t borrow if you have overdue books. Lost items should be reported as quickly as possible. Student can resume borrowing once the lost item has been paid for at the library. You can also request a book if the library does not hold it in our collection. Our books are divided into two main sections, these are FICTION BOOKS and NON-FICTION books. CLICK 
  6. Fiction Books can be known as “Works of imagination”, “made-up” stories or “not true books”. They are arranged in alphabetical order by the first four letters of the author’s last name. E.G. ROWL Included in this section are Picture books, Skinny books and Talking books (audio cassettes of popular reading books). We also have manga, graphic novels and comics. You will be encouraged to read these books during your English periods in the library. If you are looking for something to read take into account the GENRE stickers on the book spines. For example, Harry Potter is Fantasy. For quick reads under 60 pages choose a SKINNY BOOK. CLICK 
  7. Non-fiction books or “true” books are about real facts regarding people and events. These are arranged by Subject numbers within the Dewey Decimal system. Mr. Dewey allocated a subject to every number from 000 to 999, so every item in the library has a number on it. This is the CALL NO. The non-fiction call no. has 2 parts; the top part is the subject no. and the bottom part is the first 3 letters of the author’s surname. At the end of each bay is a quick guide to the general subjects with each number range. CLICK 
  8. The library is a place where you can research your schoolwork. Our information Resources include: Newspapers- If you want to find the lastest news we receive a copy of The Australian, The Age and the Herald Sun every day and have an archive that goes back 1 year. The newspapers are for photocopying and reading purposes only. Do not cut articles out of them. Books Encyclopedias. We have a set of World Book Encyclopedia in our non-fiction section and World Book Web in our E-Library E-Library-is a great place to find information resources for your work CLICK 
  9. I am now going to show you how to get to the College E-Library Start at the intranet page and click on College Library. World Book Web is under Resources/ Databases The Glamis Hub is our Library Book Blog. There is some really interesting library news on the blog, you can post comments and reviews about books you have read. So check it out! It is also a great place to go it you are looking for reading recommendations. The Library Wiki has how to guides and research information. Check out the Melville Dewey Rap after class to learn the basics of the Dewey Decimal System. Melville is a bit of a YouTube celebrity and lots of people have done remakes of this video. The library catalogue can be accessed from any computer in the school via the link in the e-library. Through entering your USERNAME you can also use the catalogue to RESERVE a book that is out on loan, submit a book review, and check what you have on loan in the MY DETAILS section. CLICK 
  10. Above all remember to…. CLICK  Okay, now I am going to get you all to do a scavenger hunt on the handout. Remember that you don’t need to do the questions in numerical order.
