  2. 2. DEFINITION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE DEFINITION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE Social science, any discipline or branch of science that deals with human behavior in its social and cultural aspects. Social science is a category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the relationships among individuals within a society. Social science as a whole has many branches, each of which is considered a social science. The term is also sometimes used to refer specifically to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 19th century.

The archaeological record consists of artifacts, architecture, biofacts or ecofacts and cultural landscapes Archaeology can be considered both a social science and a branch of the humanities In North America archaeology is a sub-field of anthropology, while in Europe it is often viewed as either a discipline in its own right or a sub-field of other disciplines.

  10. 10. Communication studies is an academic field that deals with processes of human communication, commonly defined as the sharing of symbols to create meaning. The discipline encompasses a range of topics, from face-to-face conversation to mass media outlets such as television broadcasting. Communication studies also examines how messages are interpreted through the political, cultural, economic, semiotic, hermeneutic, and social dimensions of their contexts.

It deals extensively with the theory and practice of politics which is commonly thought of as determining of the distribution of power and resources. Political scientists "see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions, and from these revelations they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics works."

  24. 24. Psychology is the science of behavior and mind, including conscious and unconscious phenomena, as well as feeling and thought. It is an academic discipline of immense scope and diverse interests that, when taken together, seek an understanding of the emergent properties of brains, and all the variety of epiphenomena they manifest. As a social science it aims to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases.

Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting human health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals". Analyzing the health of a population and the threats is the basis for public health.

  32. 32. As there is a scientific approach to social sciences, it is considered to be a branch of study in between humanities and natural sciences.

  34. 34. The study of humanities can be traced back to ancient Greece. It was during the Roman times that the concept of seven liberal arts developed like; rhetoric and logic, grammar, music, astronomy, arithmetics, astronomy, and geometry. There was a great shift, however, to the study of humanities in the 15th century.
  35. 35. Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber are credited with giving a modern definition to social sciences. This branch of study was influenced by the French revolution and the industrial revolution.
