How do people make sense of a novel situation, such as engaging with a media product you've never used before? If that media product is a virtual world, then it appears people will make a bridge between the virtual and the physical -- by using metaphors to compare their experiences in the virtual world to those from the physical world.

Given the appearance and reappearance of this notion of transaction, interaction and communication across his writings, Dewey can be said to be an important and early contributor to discourses on “traffic” as an event and as a medium. His wide-ranging and gradually evolving thought offers an opportunity to see how various issues can be configured in terms of dynamic flow and circulation. These issues include the development of technical media that were profoundly reshaping nearly all aspects of everyday reality in Dewey’s time. Among these technical media are the railway and telephone, as well as the mass media of radio, film, newspaper and other print forms. As one would expect, Dewey frequently portrayed these as facilitating ever an ever-widening gyre in a larger, generative economy or medium. At the same time though, Dewey was forced to address far-reaching critiques of communication in the political arena, which saw new media as distorting and blocking effective communication. In this presentation, I focus on Dewey’s remarks on media and circulation in both his 1927 book, The Public and its Problems, and in two early works, “The Primary-Education Fetich [sic]” and “Lectures vs. Recitations: A Symposium.” As McLuhan perceptively noted, “Dewey” was in effect “reacting against passive print culture [and thus] surf boarding along on the new electronic wave.” Through this examination, I show how Dewey is indeed, and perhaps unwittingly, riding along an electronic wave that was just beginning to well up in the first half of the twentieth century.

CSJournalism Digital Communication specialists Noah Echols and Clay Duda presentation about transparency vs. anonymity on the Internet at Geekend 2011 in Savannah, Ga. Novemeber 12, 2011. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, argues for complete transparency (thus accountability) on the Internet. Christopher "Moot" Poole, founder of the image message board 4Chan, argues for the anonymity and the freedom it brings. Both perspectives affect how we interact and communicate online, and increasingly within the world around us as our culture becomes more and more tech-saturated. In this presentation Echols and Duda examine each arguments and the respective founder's real-world actions within the historical context of communication and interpersonal studies. How has context collapse reshaped the way you communicate? Are you aware of the shift?

A World Wide Web site for this book can be found at http://www.hf.uib.no/cybertexV It contains links to many of the texts and computer programs discussed, as well as pointers to other relevant resources. Literature is a combinatorial game that pursues the possibilities implicit in its own material, independent of the personality of the poet, but it is a game that at a certain point is invested with an unexpected mean ing, a meaning that is not patent on the linguistic plane on which we were working but has slipped in from another level, activating something that on that second level is of great concern to the author or his society. The literature machine can perform all the permutations possible on a given material, but the poetic result will be the particular effect of one of these permutations on a man endowed with a con sciousness and an unconscious, that is, an empirical and historical man. It will be the shock that occurs only if the writing machine is surrounded by the hidden ghosts of the individual and his society. T A 0 C A V N 0 ene Introduction: Ergodic Literature The Book and the Labyrinth A few words on the two neoteric terms, cybertext and ergodic, are in order. Cybertext is a neologism derived from Norbert Wiener's book (and discipline) called Cybernetics, and subtitled Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine (1948). Wiener laid an important foundation for the development of digital computers, but his scope is not limited to the mechanical world of transistors and, later, of microchips. As the subtitle indicates, Wiener's perspec tive includes both organic and inorganic systems; that is, any system that contains an information feedback loop. Likewise, the concept of cybertext does not limit itself to the study of computer-driven (or "electronic") textuality; that would be an arbitrary and unhistorical limitation, perhaps comparable to a study of literature that would only acknowledge texts in paper-printed form. While there might be sociological reasons for such a study, we would not be able to claim a ...

Metaphor is both a rhetorical device and a cognitive lever. It allows us to make the familiar seem strange and the strange feel familiar. It allows us to use our knowledge of a well-understood domain to structure and fill-out a domain in which we are less knowledgeable, or for which we lack the established terminology. In short, metaphor gives new life to our words, and new power to our concepts. The tutorial focuses on the computational processing of metaphor: how might a computer understand a metaphor, and how might a computer generate meaningful and novel metaphors of its own?
