Does Social Media Destroy Real-Life Communication?
by Jessie Abbygil (Form 3A1)
As the days go by, technology is becoming more and more advanced. This also affects the way people
interact with each other. From post to wired phones and, now, almost everybody in the world has access to the
internet. Social media is used to not only communicate internationally; it is also used for short distances.
While it is great that having social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other social
media apps help us to connect with the other side of the world, it is also a one-way ticket to a broken trust and
bond. This is because many arguments have started on social media that could cause real-life communication risks.
These arguments on social media can be very dangerous for those who have social media at a young age. On the
other hand, online interaction has provided a big improvement to people’s lives as it helps them to express their
feelings better than they would face-to-face.
Dr. Kate Roberts, a Boston-based school psychologist, said that technologies are at fault for the increasing
amount of people having a difficult time interacting with each other face-to-face. She said “It is like we have lost the
skill of courtship and the ability to make that connection.” She is also concerned that children would have difficulty
communicating with each other in real life as they have already taken the easy method to communicate, through
social media. Fortunately, some parents are smart enough to limit their children’s screen time and let them get out
of their comfort zones and discover what is around them.
Others say that social media is ruining some of their relationships with people. Maybe because of the
false news or misunderstandings posted online that they all lose trust in each other. People have shared opinions
that using their phones make them ignore what is happening around them and have less face-to-face interaction.
We also need to pay attention to the fact that lots of people have become addicted to social media. Even though it
may seem harmless compared to alcohol addiction and smoking addiction, it still has a big impact on those who are
addicted to social media.
There are many more reasons why social media is affecting real-life communication negatively. Even
though it may not seem serious enough, it has a big effect on everybody who uses social media frequently to
communicate. Maybe not right now but, if people do not try hard enough to solve this issue, social media will
become our only way of communication and face-to-face interaction will no longer be used.
Jessie Abbygil is a kind and sweet girl. She may look arrogant but, in reality, she is
actually nice when you get to know her. She is the oldest one among her three siblings.
She likes to take videos and photos while dreaming of being a world-renowned
photographer one day.

My 3-Year Experience At SMK Tabuan Jaya
by Chris Emannnuel Rentap (Form 4K1)
In this essay, I am going to tell all of you about my 3-year experience at SMK Tabuan Jaya. I have a lot of
wonderful experiences and memories from my three years at the school. 10 January 2016 was a big day for me,
because on that day I registered as a student at SMK Tabuan Jaya. I had been dreaming of pursuing my career as a
student at SMK Tabuan Jaya [SSN Sarawak] since I was a kid. On that day, I got nervous and felt a little bit scared
because, when I came to the hall, I could see a lot of big guys helping the teachers with student registration. After
my registration process was done, I was brought to my new room in the hostel. Then, my life as a student at SMK
Tabuan Jaya started.
To be honest, 2016 was a tough year for me because I needed to go through so many obstacles as a Form 1
student. There were many great memories like meeting new friends and representing my state at the Under-14 KPM
League. However, I only played for the last two games, which were against SS Bukit Jalil and SSN Kelantan. It was ok,
at least I had some experience from the matches. The most memorable moment was when I got third place in the
last examination of the year and won the award for best class decoration and cleanliness.
In 2017, I was a Form 2 student. I had only two missions for 2017: Firstly, improve my knowledge and target
for first place in class examinations, and secondly, to participate in KPM League again. My dreams came true. I
participated in KPM League and travelled to other states, like Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang and Perlis. We
also fought against great teams like Mokhtar Dahari U14 Academy. Even though we lost the game, we gained some
experience from it. In the end, we only got 7th
place by winning some of the games. I have achieved my second
mission, but I failed to achieve my first mission. Day after day, I was disappointed to realize that I was always away
for competitions. In the end, my examination results became worse, but I did not let this break my spirit to always
learn. This was a springboard for me: No pain, no gain. I tried to fix my flaws in the learning process.
2018 was a big year for me because I had the PT3 examinations in September. My new mission was to give
my best to get the best results for PT3. I started to study hard. In 2018, I did not participate in KPM League. 2018 was
also a bad year for me, I got an injury on my right knee when I was playing football in my hometown. It was a
horrible and terrible memory. It made me disappointed. I could still play but I could not give my 100% because of
this broken knee. I focus only on PT3, and the History and Geography assignments. When PT3 was around the
corner, I cried by myself. I answered all of the papers and my hard work paid off. I got an excellent result and it was
my pride for the whole of my life.
For 2019, I also have a mission. My mission is to always improve my knowledge and make my behaviour
become better and better. The most important things is I want to draw a smile on everybody’s faces.
Chris Emannnuel Rentap is from Miri, Sarawak. He was born on 27 October 2003 and is the
eldest among his siblings. Now, Chris is a student at SMK Tabuan Jaya (Sarawak State Sport
School) in Kuching. At SMK Tabuan Jaya, Chris participates in football, a passion he has loved
since he was a kid. Besides, Chris also loves music very much, as he likes to sing. Chris has a huge
dream. He wants to be a successful person and make his parents proud of him. He wants to
draw smiles on everybody’s faces. He does not want anyone to feel sad. He wants you to be
happy too.

My Durian Holiday
by Eryxson Anak BIlly (Form 2S1)
Where would I like to go for the holidays? These thoughts always come to my mind as the holidays draw
near. After much thought, I like to spend my holidays in my hometown. This is because my uncle owns an orchard
there and I am essentially a durian person. I just love durians a lot and I cannot wait to eat them!
On the last day of school which was Friday, I eagerly waited for the bell to ring at 11:30 a.m. Then, I slung my
bag over my shoulder and made my way home as soon as possible. Once I arrived, I quickly packed my clothes into
my bags and waited for my father to come back from his work, since he was the one who would be driving. When he
arrived, I rushed towards him and told him that I wanted to go back to our hometown before the day turned to
night, but he told me that he was very tired and he could not drive at that moment. I was pretty sad about it and I
could not sleep really well that night.
In the next morning, we started our journey at 9:00 a.m. The journey took about 2 hours to my hometown
so we arrived by 11:00 a.m. When we arrived, we had a quick lunch and rested for a while. In the afternoon, my
uncle invited me to join him in looking at the durians in the orchard, so I said yes and I was on cloud nine. A few
minutes later, my uncle and I arrived at the orchard. There were a lot of durian trees all over the orchard.
Suddenly, we heard a loud crash at a distance. I was startled for a moment. Then, we went to the place
where the sound came from and we found durians! I picked them up and carried them back to a wooden hut that
was built by my uncle. After a moment, there were dozens of durians piled up at the hut and we were very tired. My
uncle decided to open one of the durians and it tasted very delicious, although some people hate them because of
their smell.
Besides eating the fruit, I also learned to be a durian expert. I asked my uncle to teach me how to tell a good
fruit from a bad one, and a ripe one from an unripe one. This was a skill that would stop me from being cheated
when buying durians at the market back home. Other than that, there was also a breath-taking waterfall nearby.
When I was tired, I usually went there to have a swim while enjoying the sound of the flowing water from the
waterfall.
My uncle also sold the durians from his orchard at a stall in the city. The next day, we went to the stalls and
started to sell the durians. Here, I learned the art of selling. I learned how people seek out the best bargains. I also
learned to become one of the world’s best salespeople! When it was night, all the durians were sold out and we
earned quite a lot of money.
In the next morning, I woke up noticing that today was the last day of my holiday. I was very sad but, of
course, I brought some durians back home. This was one of the best holidays that I had ever had since I learned a lot
of things throughout my holiday. Although it only lasted for three days, the memories and experiences made were
very valuable and irreplaceable.
Eryxson Anak BIlly is a friendly and a talkative person. He is the kind of friend you need when
you are having difficulties in learning, especially in mathematics, because mathematics is the
queen of science to him. He also likes to play games but he always reminds himself not to get
addicted and to manage his time well. Other than that, he is also an animal lover and he pets
animals, such as dogs and cats. In the future, he wants to be a pilot, because his dream is to
travel around the world and visits the most amazing places on the Earth!

Think Before You Speak
by Kamilla Adlina bt. Abd Latif (Form 3A1)
When it comes to talking or speaking, everyone is good at it, but they do not know that they can
hurt people. A random word that comes out of our mouth will impact our lives and other people's lives. It
may sound crazy but we have the power to make or to break someone's day. Even though words cannot
hurt people physically, it will hurt them emotionally.
Emotional pain is also hard to cure as it cannot be treated like physical wounds. Our speech will
shape our life. Time and again, you will find yourself in situations, where the outcome depends on what
and how you say things. Let's think about what would happen if we misspoke and the trouble it would
bring to us. We are presenting ourselves as thoughtless and careless, and people might even think that we
are heartless for saying particular words to them.
We can try to pause before opening our mouths, and think of the perfect word we can say to
people without hurting or disappointing them. Another thing is to try restraining ourselves from speaking
out of anger. We might speak bluntly as we are angry at that moment. Next, we can try to communicate
respectfully. It is likely that we will be able to prevent the bad or harsh words from slipping out.
Thinking before we speak might be challenging for some people, but it is not an excuse for us to
keep hurting people. We can try to change ourselves to be better people. Our words are our reflection, so
we need to be kind and say meaningful things to our family, friends, teachers, and even strangers.
Ways To Reduce Air Pollution
by Marsha Amber Donny (Form 2S1)
Nowadays, many people like to do activities that can cause air pollution, such as burning fossil fuels.
There are a lot of steps that we can take to help reduce air pollution.
One of the ways is to plant a tree. By planting a tree, it can absorb a ton of carbon dioxide gas.
Furthermore, it can also release oxygen into the atmosphere. Besides that, taking public transportation is
also one of the ways to help reduce air pollution. Taking public transportation can reduce the release of
carbon monoxide gas. Other than that, we also need to recycle paper, plastic, metals, and organic
materials. In this way, we can conserve natural resources such as wood, water, and minerals.
In conclusion, we know that air is the most important need of living things. We should remember
that air pollution problems can affect us all. Therefore, lets us stop doing activities that can cause air
pollution.
