Paul Donnellon
Early life
Paul Donnellon is an Irish director and animator based in
London.
He began his career directing music videos and TV commercials
and has won awards in both these areas alongside awards for his
short animated films and illustrations.
VooDooDog
In 2002 he founded his own animation studio, which is currently
an award winning Emmy nominated studio.
He does work through this studio and worked on projects such
as Nanny McPhee and Smokin’ Aces.
He is most famous for his title sequences for:
Nanny McPhee, Smokin Aces (2006) and The life and death of
Peter Sellers (2004).
He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his title sequence
for The life and death of Peter sellers, but only came as a runner
up.
Smokin Aces (2006)
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/smokin-aces/
The bright and high contrast colours used in this title sequence
sends the audience back to the 60’s and 70’s. The music used
and the imagery gives the film an almost retro like feel.
Much like most of his previous work, the sequence takes on an
animated style.
It is inspired by the work of Butch Cassidy and The Sundance kid.
The text used is very simple and straightforward, with its main
purpose just being to portray the cast and crew member’s
names.
The title of the film itself comes right at the end of the sequence
and is considerably bigger than the rest of the text used.
Nanny McPhee
http://www.watchthetitles.com/articles/0011-Nanny_McPhee
"Nanny McPhee is a colorful kids movie. The director, Kirk Jones,
saw our Peter Sellers title sequence and asked us to pitch on his
opening credits.”
His title sequence for Nanny McPhee took on yet another
animated style, which is very much his preferred style and has
been over his career. The titles themselves take on a very
childlike approach, with lots of animated characters and child
friendly special effects being used to suit the genre of the film as
a whole.
