Portfolio Strategy Sheet Choose a method or strategy that you have learned about or observed during field experience. Name of method or strategy: Exit ticket When is this method or strategy useful? At the end of the lesson (wrap-up) Why or how is this method or strategy useful? As a feedback for the teacher To enhance students critical thinking To use vocabulary learned by writing What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method? The teacher gives a piece of paper to students at the end of the class (wrap-up stage) and he/she asks students to complete a certain question or some things teacher wants to get from students (information, comments about the class, what they think of something in particular, etc) and students write their answers on the piece of paper given. Once they have finished and they give the paper they can go home. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting? For students to give their opinions in a more discrete way and freely express what they think or feel about a particular thing/situation. For me as a teacher it would give me a new perspective of what goes on in my students’ mind and what they think. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy? That is very useful and it is another way to check writing and their understanding of a topic. Portfolio Strategy Sheet Choose a method or strategy that you have learned about or observed during field experience. Name of method or strategy: Save the last word for me When is this method or strategy useful? For discussion of a topic or after reading a text. Why or how is this method or strategy useful? To encourage critical thinking To enhance conversational skills To increase vocabulary. To set a discussion for a topic in different groups rather than as a whole class. What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method? The teacher give students a text to read (text can be posted on the wall or given to them directly). Then students are grouped up and one person (moderator) takes charge in being the one who starts the discussion and also will be the one who finishes (the last word is saved for him/her). There is a specific length of time given for the discussion and the moderator has to be aware of time so that when time is almost over he/she starts speaking until time is over. This way everyone gives an opinion and everyone listens to everyone. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting? To review reading and to enhance critical thinking skills, also for students to practice analyzing what they read. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy? “Save the last word for me” is a great technique and a good alternative to improve speaking skills and fluency as well as encourage the use of vocabulary. Also is a great way to extend our students critical thinking. Portfolio Strategy Sheet Choose a method or strategy that you have learned about or observed during field experience. Name of method or strategy: Probable passage When is this method or strategy useful? For prediction of a reading. (Pre-reading strategy) Why or how is this method or strategy useful? To encourage critical thinking To brainstorm students ideas To predict What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method? The teacher takes an amount of quotes from a reading and groups up students. The teacher gives each group a certain quote so they can all read together and think about what the reading might possibly be about. Once the groups have finished and reached a conclusion on what the reading could be about, the teacher asks to find out the groups’ responses. After every group has given their thoughts, the teacher gives the reading and students check if their prediction was right or not. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting? Before reading a text. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy? This is a good way to teach reading and keep your students attentive and involved. They will find reading more interesting because they will want to know if they were right about their predictions or not. Is another great way for students to enjoy reading. Portfolio Strategy Sheet Choose a method or strategy that you have learned about or observed during field experience. Name of method or strategy: Four corners When is this method or strategy useful? At the end of a class and/or in the middle of the lesson. Why or how is this method or strategy useful? To encourage critical thinking To enhance conversational skills For students to give their opinions. Grouping What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method? The teacher states the title of the four corners of the classroom (e.g. strongly agree, strongly disagree, agree, disagree) and students are given a quote. Students take the corner that aligns best to their preference of the quote given and discuss why they think that with the people who chose the same corner they chose and come to a consensus. One member of each corner shares the opinion of the group with the whole class. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting? This strategy can be useful to encourage students to speak and for students to state their point of view. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy? That is a good way to evaluate the growth of students and their speaking skills. Also, it is a great way to let students express themselves to what they believe is true for them and to share with others who feel the same way and to politely disagree with those who have a different point of view. Portfolio Strategy Sheet Choose a method or strategy that you have learned about or observed during field experience. Name of method or strategy: Wordwall When is this method or strategy useful? To learn vocabulary Why or how is this method or strategy useful? For students to learn vocabulary For students to practice and use new vocabulary in their sentences when speaking. What are the steps involved in using this strategy or method? Words have to be posted on the wall, like a vocabulary wall. Students use the words at least once a day to make sentences using the vocabulary that they have chosen themselves. Words can be put in alphabetical columns or posted in groups as they were learned. Teacher or students can be charge of adding the words. When would this method or strategy be useful in your setting? To introduce new vocabulary and for students to use it in real life situations. What would you like other teachers in your school to know about this method or strategy? It is not difficult to do and it has a lot of advantages that are always aimed to the learning of the students.

Strategies...
