How can organizations, especially nonprofits, prepare parts of their operations to become startups for social impact? This presentation introduces a business model canvas for startups.
1. Facilitated by Sheryle Gillihan
Designing for the
Greater Good
Welcome! Please think of two words and write each on a sticky note.
2. Create a Culture of Innovation for Good
● Frame it with your mission
● Foster creativity
● Ideate often and openly
● Understand the problem
● Embrace failure
● Overcome fear
● Know when to walk away
● Support change
5. Empathize and understand the problem
Things that suck:
● List anything or
choose a theme.
My people are...
● We create for people
and with people.
How might we?
● HMW ______ so that
______ can ______.
6. Define the objective:
How might we unlock our
innate creativity to create
engaging programs so that
more lives are impacted?
7. A Few Creative Ideation Exercises
Brainstorming
Give each person or team two random words ask
for business ideas. This fosters creativity.
Yes, And
Ideate together using only yes, and in response to
the previous person. This reveals underlying wants.
Empathy Challenge
Display a scene that shares the challenge at hand.
Ask what is happening outside of that frame.
Systems Mapping
Circle up in groups of 8-10. Each person selects 2
others. Now, all move to form equilateral triangles.
11. How Might We ________(strategy)________ to ________(action)________
so that ________(human-centered result)________.
How Might We ________(what)________ to ________(how)________ so
that ________(why)________.
12. As a ________(identity)________ at my organization, I strive to build
________(what)________ because ________(why)________.
As a ________(identity)________, I recognize I need to notice
________(what)________ when I ________((action))________ by
________(how)________ so ________(equitable outcome of why)________.
13. Explore your storybrand.

14. There are no bad ideas. Good solutions
sometimes come from not so good ideas.
15. Design an
experience
Kindergarteners are more creative
than a group of CEOs. Somewhere
along the way, we confined ourselves
to coloring inside the lines.
Learn to prototype and build an MVP
(minimum viable product or program).
What you’ll need:
● Pen, Paper, Markers, Crayons,
Scissors, Blocks, Sticks, String or
other craft supplies.
16. Ask questions often
Test, Test and Test
We can dive into building new and
better options, and fail to create the
roadmap for adoption and change.
Some questions to ask:
● Who does this serve?
● Why is this better?
● What is the competition?
● How will we support adoption?
● What are the possible effects?
Then, test with real people!
17. Failure is understanding what doesn’t
work. It’s a process of elimination
towards finding a new approach.
22. To find success you need to support
change and new products or programs.
