Working Title: Jack Morton’s Survival guide
What is it called? This can change if you think of something better later
Product’s Purpose:
My products purpose is to entertain and educate the audience, I will achieve this by
teaching the ways on how to survive in the English forest and also use a humour to
entertain as well. I will do this by showing them, on how to make a fire, shelter, food and
potential threats that you might encounter on the way through the dangerous English
forests. I will use humour as it will I will create jokes and skits to make them laugh and
make the documentary more enjoyable to watch. I will be putting a survival guide theme
and vive to the survival guide documentary on what to do and what not to do. This will
include campfires to keep warm, shelters to stay away from deadly animalsand what type
of food is suitable to eat. I will then decide on what music I should in as I will have to
consider what sort of royalty music as I don’t want any copyright issues. I’m also deciding
whether I should add in stop motion into the documentary to make it more interesting for
the audience.
What is the product’s purpose (entertain/educate etc.) and how will you achieve this?
Genre:
The product is a documentary and the type of the documentary I will be making is called a
reflexive documentary which is usually is a personal documentary where the film maker
might do pieces to camera. A reflexive Documentary also shows the hosts experiences
through his journey and throughout the documentary. This is the specific type of
documentary I will be making. I will then focus on realism and try to show the subject as it
happens. This may mean more raw and uncut footage than a usual docume ntary. A good
example of a reflexive documentary is Nick Broomfield, as he makes his documentaries
more personal. He does this by keeping to a limited crew as its just him and a camera
operator. The audience can sometimes get see behind the scenes and how the
documentary is recorded, however I wont be doing this. This type of documentary tends to
be more experimental. A good example of a experimental documentary would be supersize
me. In this documentary we follow the life of a documentary film maker Morgan Spurlock as
he eats fast food every day for a month. The documentary takes Morgan Spurlock on a
journey to find out what happens to the human body, when it has influx of fast food. It
shows his personal journey through pain as he eats from MacDonald's three times a day.
As I will plan my documentary around a reflexive stand point.
What sort of product is it
Content
My product is about survival in the English forests and this will be made into a
documentary. I will be putting a survival guide on what to do and what not to do. This will
include campfires to keep warm, shelters to stay away from deadly animalsand what type
of food is suitable to eat. I will include effects in my final product such as making the
screen with a slight green tinge. I will do this because it will make the viewer feel asif they
are in the documentary and as if there surviving with the host. I will use premiere in my final
product to edit the video such as editing the film with premiere and editing out the scenes I
don’t want in my documentary. I will do this because It will make the viewer interested in
my documentary by adding the most interesting scenes, therefore the viewer will be fully
focused on my documentary. The purpose of the documentary is to entertain and e ducate
the people on how to survive. I will achieve this by teaching the ways on how to survive in
the English forest and also use a humour to entertain as well. I will do this by showing
them, on how to make a fire, shelter, food and potential threats that you might encounter on
the way. To use humour I will create jokes and skits to make them laugh and make the

What is your product about? Discuss what you would put in it (be specific). Does it have a story? If
so, discuss it here
Research & Planning
I will use my research on my editing part of my final major project as I have learned new
ways/more effective ways of editing. This will be helpful as I will know straight away how to
edit, therefore this will save time resulting in me doing more detail on other aspects of my
final major project. I will also use my questionnaires I did to gather opinions on my final
projects ideas, as I will add in cooking aspects into the survival documentary as I have
learned my audience would enjoy watching this. I also learned my audience would not want
the documentary to be funny as I will appeal to this by not adding any humour to the
documentary. Overall I do think my research will influence my final project as I have learned
new and exciting ideas from my audience view points and also learned by trial and error as
I have some experience in the past now to go off. Quantitative research is made with closed
questions as you can get information on both subjects, however the disadvantage of using
quantitative research is that the closed the question is short and to the point, this will mean
you are given a small amount of information. My quantitative survey told me both sides of
my documentary trailer with information on both sides of the questions. The advantages of
Qualitative research it is more in depth and is more useful finding out about peoples
opinions, beliefs and reasoning. It is most seen in a text or a discussion format or seen
when a person has to reflect and expand on their answer. Another advantage is Qualitative
research is presented with open questions. A disadvantage is that the open questions
require the interviewee to explain and expand their answer because of this, the answer
needs a lot of detail and reasons why. This can be time consuming as you will need a
detailed answer. My qualitative interview told me a lot of information however this extended
the interview as I had to ask more detail.
Where will you use elements of your research and planning to influence and inform your final idea
(be specific to certain parts)
Audience:
My audience will be 16-34, the gender will aimed at both. The social status will be aimed at
all people because it doesn’t matter how much money you have, it’s about knowledge and
using the right tools for the right jobs. The psychographic is for people who act upon
instinct and impulse and adapt to there surrounding quickly. Therefore I will include
instinct movement and also think of ideas right on the spot because survival can be used in
any dangerous situation as you will need a “needsdriven” mindset. My project will appeal
to this certain group of people because it will be around their age range which is 16-34 and
will appeal to them because they have energy and have the imagination to survive in the
wilderness. It also is suitable because it’s ABC1 demographic, this is the same as channel
4s target market for survival documentaries. The gender will appeal to certain people is
because survival is for everybody no matter what gender you are, the wilderness will treat
you the same. The audience data I have gathered has suggested that the audience would
want a detailed, smooth and outgoing documentary and the documentary will have quick
decisions as this will target the “Needs Driven” type of people.
Who is your audience? Be very detailed; age, gender, social status, psychographic etc
Why would your project appeal to this person?

Legal & Ethical Considerations:
The gender will appeal to all people because survival is for everybody no matter what
gender you are. This will mean I won’t be restricting for younger audiences, as this will not
offend any social groups/religions/ethnicities. I will make sure of this by doing research and
planning before publishing. I will make sure of this by biding to the ASA codes, therefore
reassuring I will not offend anyone and I will not get sued as I will use royalty free music to
avoid copy right issues. I will not break any OFCOM codes as for section 1 “Protecting the
Under-Eighteens” as I am sure that people under the age of 18 are protected, as there will
be no offensive language, nudity, etc. Another section I have NOT broken is section 2 which
states “Harm and offence”. I have Not broken this rule as my documentary is Non-Violent,
NO-Dangerous Behaviour and NO SUICIDE is found in my documentary trailer.
Think about any offensive material you will include?
Will you restrict younger people using/accessing it?
Will it offend any social groups/religions/ethnicities?
How will you ensure you do not offend anyone?
Are you using characters/names/logos of existing products/IPs?
Will you product be sufficiently different from existing products to not get sued for copyright
infringement?
