  2. 2. Tanzania Development Trust is a volunteer run charity that has worked with grassroots organisations in rural Tanzania for over 45 years
  3. 3. Local FGM survivor and Hope Director Rhobi Samwelly Hope for Girls and Women supports: • Local Activists • Outreach work • Safe Houses

FGM The cutting of female genitalia for cultural or religious reasons: Type 1: partial or total removal of the clitoris Type 2: as Type 1 with additional removal of the labia minora and often the labia majora Type 3: re-arrangement of the genitals to narrow the vaginal opening Type 4: all other procedures (pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing)
  5. 5. Girls are rounded up during the ‘Cutting Season’ when they are on school holidays 70% + 50% + Less than 50% FGM Prevalence in Tanzanian Women and Girls 2016

  10. 10. ADDING LOCAL KNOWLEDGE WITH ORGANIC MAPS APP We train field mappers in rural Tanzania to add their local knowledge to the map using Organic Maps, a free smartphone app that works offline.
  11. 11. And trained the police and activists to use the maps to quickly find and protect girls at risk. And also add missing places to the map.
  12. 12. New smartphone users see a map of their village for the first time as part of the Digital Champions project.
  13. 13. Digital Champions Set up 87 Digital Champions in every village in Serengeti District in 2019, who are still ongoing Further funding from UNFPA in 2021 supported a further 56 in Butiama and 210 in Tarime Districts
  14. 14. Digital Champions were selected from the Women and Children’s Protection Committee by the village. They had never used a smartphone before. Training included how to use the phone that they were provided with. It also included a micro sd (memory) card with downloaded videos, books and other materials about agriculture, health and womens’ rights.
  15. 15. Digital Champions were joined into a WhatsApp group for ongoing training and support, as well as training in person and training visits by Safe House staff.
  16. 16. Better maps have: • helped 3000+ girls to find safehouses and avoid being cut • coincided with a reduced FGM death rate of 75%
