12. Slack channel is good for
generating a community, and

questions and get instant
feedback on their 1st
mapping attempts etc. – if
anyone would like to join
please let me know!
13. ADDING LOCAL KNOWLEDGE WITH ORGANIC MAPS APP
We train field mappers
in rural Tanzania to add
their local knowledge to
the map using Organic
Maps, a free
smartphone app that
works offline.
15. And trained the police
and activists to use the
maps to quickly find and
protect girls at risk.
And also add missing
places to the map.
16. New smartphone users
see a map of their village
for the first time as part of
the Digital Champions
project.
17. Digital Champions
Set up 87 Digital Champions in every village in Serengeti District in
2019, who are still ongoing
Further funding from UNFPA in 2021 supported a further 56 in Butiama
and 210 in Tarime Districts
19. Digital Champions were selected
from the Women and Children’s
Protection Committee by the
village. They had never used a
smartphone before.
Training included how to use the
phone that they were provided
with. It also included a micro sd
(memory) card with
downloaded videos, books and
other materials about
agriculture, health and womens’
rights.
20. Digital Champions were joined into a
WhatsApp group for ongoing training
and support, as well as training in
person and training visits by Safe
House staff.
22. Better maps have:
• helped 3000+ girls to find safehouses
and avoid being cut
• coincided with a reduced FGM
death rate of 75%
24. Please join us and help map
to help protect girls from FGM!
