1 AREAS FOR DEVELOPMENT
Various areas of the Infant school yard were redeveloped to bring the
school in line with the new Foundation Phase teaching.
Areas internally were redeveloped to improve wellbeing within the school
New Staff room
This room would be moved from upstairs to a classroom which was not
in full use.
PPA Room
This room was relocated upstairs to the old staffroom. New computers
where moved to this room for teachers to work in year groups.
SEN Room
This room was relocated to the old PPA room although smaller it is still fit
for purpose.
Infant Yard
This was phase two of the redevelopment of the yard
This area would see the biggest transformation, with new flowerbeds and
the removal of the pergola area for a new shelter. This shelter would
allow the children to play and learn outdoors in all weathers.
Phase one was carried out two years ago which incorporated two areas
of the yard, this meant that the two reception class could play and
intermingle with each other rather then being static in their own yard
space.

A plot of land at the rear of the school located on Siloh Road. Formally a
plot owned by the City and County of Swansea housing department.

2 REASONS FOR THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Infant Yard
During a review of the school playground by the Eco Committee, the
children suggested several areas of the yard that they would like
changed.
After a meeting with the Deputy Head and drawing up of some new plans
and ideas from the rest of the staff, a plan of action was put in front of the
Headteacher. The head suggested that costings be put together and a
time scale for the redevelopment.
It was planned to demolish the old pergola and flower beds and replace
with a new sheltered area. This area would allow the children to be
taught outdoors in all weathers.
Several companies were invited to put in tenders for the building of this
shelter. They were sourced from the internet and from references from
other school.
They other part of the development was to build new flower beds with
incorporated benches. These areas would allow the children to sit and
talk to friends during playtimes or just to sit quietly if they so wished.
Infant Staffroom
This room had become too small for the amount of staff in the school.
There are over 30 members of staff and the room could only hold 20
comfortably.
Also there was a fire risk as the room was upstairs and the staircase was
very narrow.
The staffroom was relocated to a classroom at the bottom end of the
school.
To reduce costs old kitchen units were moved from the old PPA room
and new doors were purchased for the fronts to give the appearance of
new units. Some extra seating was purchased and together with some
new flooring the room has turned out to be a great success with the staff.

PPA Room
This room has been moved upstairs to where the old staffroom was
located. The old cupboards were removed moved a new computer
station put in place and new flooring have been purchased.
The teaching staff have found this new room to be far more comfortable
and is able to get on with their work without being disturbed.
SEN Room
This room is now located in the old PPA room. The old units in this room
were removed and reused in the new staffroom. This has made the room
much bigger. New carpet has been laid to make the room warmer and
more comfortable. The old SEN unit were reused in this room with some
refurbishment carried out so this again cut down on costs.
Junior School Plot
This plot of land was given to the school by the Housing Department.
The plans for this plot of land are to fence off the plot to make it safe for
the children to use and reduce the amount of fly tipping on the plot.
Planning permission was gained through the local authority for new
railings and feathered fencing.
A World War II garden will be developed working with Year six and their
teachers, a small reading area will also be built and then a small wildlife
area created.

5 EVALUATION OF PROJECTS.
Infant Yard
The yard has proved to be a great success within the school community.
The children are able to have an extra covered area to play under when
it rains. The teachers can teach in all weathers externally, and parents
have extra shelter at the end of the day while waiting to pick up their
children.
The children who took part in the review of the yard even as young as
four and five are happy with the outcome of the development. They
helped with the soil and the planting of the sensory areas, they also
helped with an application for a grant to buy plants from a local society.
There were some negative comments from some parents stating that
play areas were reduced but when plans were explained that there was
about a 3% reduction in play space this was due to the removal of the
old planters which up took a large amount of space under the old
pergola.

Staffroom/Wellbeing Room
The staff can now all join together in one room. As before they had
complained about being cramped and no room to sit. They now feel
more comfortable with new seating areas more kitchen space to prepare
their food. The way in which the room has now been set up means that
all staff can engage in conversation with each other and not have their
backs to each other. Overall the staff are a lot happier with the room
compared to the old set up. Several meetings are now carried out in this
room as the room is now equipped with a computer and a smartboard.
PPA Room
The PPA room has been moved upstairs to the old staff
room. The teaching staff now have a larger room with more computers,
which means they can work in year groups rather than as individuals.
They can now plan together and not get disturbed as they were in the old
PPA room. The other part of room which the teaching staff are a lot
happier with the extra cupboard space to store their subject files and
materials for which they are responsible. Teacher’s comments have
been “This room is a vast improvement on the old PPA room the room is
far more spacious and far more comfortable to work in.”
SEN Room
At first the SENCO was worried about moving to this room as she felt it
may be too small for her needs. But with careful planning and using less
furniture the room has turned out to be a useful teaching space. The staff
and children are comfortable and the removal of the photocopier means
they are no longer disturbed by anyone collecting their copies. This room
also doubles up now as a reading room and as a medical room for when
school medicals take place.

Siloh Road Plot
This project will be an ongoing project, as of now several City and
County agencies has come on board with help, both with funds and
skills. The first objective will be to secure the plot. This will be achieved
by City and County engineering section that will be designing and fixing
new railings around the plot.
Update on costings
Some Health and Safety issues were raised about the type of brick to be
used in the construction of the new entrance way from the school yard it
was decided to use bull-nose bricks, as these are bricks with rounded
edges.
When the new estimate was received it had risen to a point that it was
decided by the steering group to open the pricing up to outside
contractors. One was contacted and his estimate came in considerably
less. The County estimators were given another chance to quote, but
could not come any near to contractors quote. All were given the same
specifications to work to.
EXPLANATION OF COSTINGS
Some costings were calculated on experience of previous jobs where
similar items had been built. I used the building of a pergola as a guide
line, i.e. one of the three was constructed to see how much material one
pergola would take. On completion of the build I knew how much
material would be needed to complete another two, plus a few extra
blanks to allow for unforeseen problems, such as bad blanks or mistakes
in cutting.
Most estimates of materials for the pergolas were accurate to a few
pounds and materials ordered.
Soil
Again soil was ordered on the basis of experience. Each unit of the
pergola was measured and a calculator was found on line to help in the
costing. An extra amount of soil was ordered to allow for soil settlement.

Several supplier were contacted, both local and away, for prices. There
was a wide variation in the cost of soil, but we decided to use a local
supplier who was a far cheaper than other suppliers. Some suppliers
were more expensive because their product was bagged in large jumbo
bags, but our supplier delivered his product loose. Although this meant
extra work, the savings on cost where considerable.
Quantities
The quantities calculation for concrete blocks was worked out by the
following method.
Each block is 440mm long x 225mm high approximately, depending on
supplier.
E.g. If I require a wall four metres long by one metre high then I would
need 9 blocks long x 4 or 5 blocks high. Some walls will need to have
pillars added depending on length and height, so this will add to your
quantities.
Blocks are generally sold by the hundred and the more you buy then
they become cheaper, but if bought individually then they become more
expensive.
Blocks can vary in price from £1 each to £2.80 each, but it is always
cheaper to buy a hundred at a time, so this can work out at £80 per 100.
Anderson shelter costs were high due the fact that the roof will have to
be rolled and formed by a specialist forming company. And these may
rise again as we may need to apply for planning permission.
Each price and quotation was checked by myself and the steering
committee, for best value for money. Any price or quotation not used
within a period of time was put out for re-pricing.
