Audience Theories Game of Thrones

  1. 1. Audience Theories
  2. 2. Game of Thrones Game of Thrones is the immensely popular television show that has aired for four seasons on HBO. The show is based on the epic fantasy novel series, A Song of Fire and Ice, written by George R. R. Martin. The first novel of the seven-book series is called A Game of Thrones; the show creators and HBO decided to keep that title as the overall name of the show. Game of Thrones takes place on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos in a setting that very much resembles the Middle Ages of Earth. Though, as in many fantasy novels, there’s no specific correlation to Earth history. While the story contains common fantasy elements, such as swordplay, magic, and fantastical creatures like dragons, those elements are downplayed in favor of political intrigue and human drama.
  3. 3. Audience Classification The target audience of this series are the readers of the book, the book of thrones had a massive following and would be keen to watch the series adaption. Another target audience would be fans of Lord of The Rings with the fantasy elements and both being great books that adapted to films and series.
  4. 4. Demographics of audience Here is an example of of two of Game of Thrones graphics based on internet websites such as Internet Movie Database.
  5. 5. Books Mixing traditional heroic fantasy with a diverse and evolving cast of characters, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire centers on the politics and statecraft of the ruling families of Westeros and beyond. With a string of switching first-person narratives from lead and ancillary characters, and an overacrching plot with more twists than a Dothraki hair braid, the novels have moved beyond staple fantasy bestsellers and into a cultural event as millions of fans discuss the HBO television series. The branching canons and miscelanies of genre fiction are commonplace to stalwart fans but the unusual running order of A Song of Ice and Fire has been known to put off newcomers to the series. The following novels are: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storms of Swords Part One: Steel and Snow, A Storm of Swords Part Two: Blood and Gold, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons Part One: Dreams and Dust and A Dance with Dragons Part Two: After the Feast.
  6. 6. Video Games Over the years there have been few video games based on a Song of Ice and Fire. The first game ever create to re-create an image of Games of Thrones was developed by a Cyanide and was named A Game of Thrones: Genesis. The game took place over 1000 years of the fictional history of Westeros. The main aim was to win the Throne. Altough the game had a good graphic design at the time it did not succed as the game breaking glitches potentially ruined the game. Next game that tried to re-create the feeling of Game of Thrones was published in early 2012 and was simply called Game of Thrones. It was an action role- playing video game based on the first novel in the series of books. Once again the game received mixed reviews due to graphicals problems. Another game on the list is Games of Thrones from 2014. The game was developed by Telltale Games and once again was set in role playing adventure world. Telltale Games is known for making games about books and novels of famous writers therefore the game meet the expectations of the fans and received positive reviews
  7. 7. Comics Not only games and animations but the Game of Thrones also made its appearance on few comic books. One of the comic book series is scripted by fantasy author Daniel Abraham and drawn by Tommy Patterson. What can be said about the comic is the fact that it really follows the story really closely, chapter by chapter, in a way that the TV series does not. What the fans did not like about this is a lack of effort put into graphical aspect of the comic. The character look alike and it was difficult to tell who it was. There was no consistency with drawing the figures and characters.
  8. 8. Reception What made the Game of Thrones so big is the mainstream popularity in the fantasy genre. If it was not for movies like Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings the Game of Thrones genre wouldnt be near as succesfull as it is now. The success of Game of Thrones also improved and tripled the sales of the series, the Song of Ice and Fire novels. I believe that the viewers enjoy the Game of Thrones for few reasons. The main reason is the gore and blood aspect of the show. The producers arent afraid to implement that to their show and it brings attention to the viewers. The producers also arent afraid to touch the subjects of religion and sex which before the show lunched might have been a huge risk to take. The series focuses on the subjects that most fantasy’s wouldn’t dare. In comparison we dont see any of that in Lord of The Rings sequels, neither in Harry Potter nor Hobbit.
