Hello,My name is Frank Gielen and I am the director of Incubation & Entrepreneurship at iMinds.iMinds is the leading digital research and incubator institute in Flanders.Today, I will talk about the Opportunity Recogition Workshop. (ORW)This workshop has been specially developed for researchers, scientists and students of the doctoral schools who want learn about the broader context of their research. The Opportunity Recognition Workshop will broaden your horizon by looking at your research from many differentangles:the business potential, the societal impact andthe value it can create for people and companies . It will help you to explore how your research can set the stage for breakthrough innovation in new products and services.
The goal of the “Opportunity Recognition” workshop is to develop your entrepreneurial and business skills by using and applying techniques and methodologies to your own research. All the activities in this workshop related back to or start from the scientific environment in which you work on a daily basis. The best way to learn new concepts and skills is in the context of your own work.
The format of this training is that of a workshop. We believe that the best way to learn all of this is by applying it to real cases in your own world. The way we have implemented this is by combining short lectures with lots of guided hands-on work. During the short lectures we will teach you the basis techniques and tools that are needed to complete the examples and the assignments of the workshop. The hands-on work will allow you to put this theory into practice right away and you will get a lot of help from experienced industry coaches who have done all of those before. They understand the many aspects and complexity of research driven innovation and will help you to identify the opportunities linked to your research or research domain.
Finally, I want to point out that this workshop should be part of the career development of every scientist. How many of you plan a career in industry and in academia ?Whether you plan an academic career or a you want to move to industry, you will always need to understand how your research can impact society, our economic system and the way people live. In the academic world, entrepreneurial insights are required when you write an application for new research funding. The valorisation of research results has become a key part of the grant proposals and is a important decision factor in the review and approval process. In business, research driven innovation and entrepreneurial savvy are key to the competitive position of your future employer by increasing its innovation capacity. So, today the skills that we develop in this workshop are not just for the few people that want to start their own company; they are considered core competencies for everybody who deals with innovation. Some of you may become an entrepreneur but all of you will have to be entrepreneurial: Best-in-class researchers combine excellence in science with strong entrepreneurial behavior because this is what you need in order to have impact with your research. This is also what we want to achieve with this workshop: IMPACT.
Leonardo Da Vinci is the role model for this workshop. His work is embedded in the design of on-line course as well in the themes of the daily activities of the workshops. Leonardo Da Vinci (1452 - 1519) was a painter, an engineer, an architect and an inventor : In our context Leonardo Da Vinci was the genius (or the nutcrack) who imagined the possibility of flying a helicopter or using a parachute 500 years before it became a reality. He made the engineering drawings and saw the opportunities long before others could see it. This is what this Opportunity Recognition workshop is about: create impact and innovation through research. With the present state of technology it will hopefully not take 500 years but more like 5 years or less ….
